Would cutting out the fan grlls reduce the "whooshing" noise the fans make and help improve airflow? I have an Antec Plusview 1000AMG case.
thanks :)

Helps a bit soundwise, but don't hope for miracles. Its mostly just worth doing it because of the restriction the grills put on airflow.

Depending on how restrictive and close the fan grill is on the case it will decrease the noise quite a bit. It also helps with airflow.

easier to gut an old fan for its shroud and put it between the fan and the grill shirley?

Stamped grills definately restrict the amount of air a fan can move. Rounded wire grills restrict a lot less but still do effect airflow. Personally, i remove ALL grills on my intakes and exhausts to get the best airflow possible. The only issue is dust but i take care of that every now and then with my craftsman air compressor. (take note to bleed any condensation from the tank before using the compressor and to let the rig sit in a semi warm room for a while before plugging things in just to be sure.

See this case. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811144082 check out the picture's the 120mm fan i nth window had a grill that was cut into the window that was so restrictive but looked nice that when i turned the fans up it made a horrible noise, specially whe ni turned the fan around to blow air in the case, (yes the fan was pointed blowing out why i dunno lol) so i took some wire snipper's and cut the grills much better air flow and no more noise
