well, im helping my friend build a computer. one i got everything installed and hooked up and everything was good to go, we tried firing it up. it ran, all the fans and everything turned on, but we got no display or any beeps. i checked and double checked all the video related questions, but nothing helped. i even tryed both sticks of RAM one at a time, nothing new. Then i plugged in this neat little backplate unit thingy that has 2 usb ports, and 4 LEDs in a square for diagnostics. when we booted the system again, same thing happened as before, but all 4 leds lit up and stayed there. according to the mobo manual, that means system power on, and is the first thing in a somewhat long list of steps during teh boot process. it says, if it hangs here, the cpu is installed incorrectly or is damaged. well, i know i installed it right cuz that socket is pretty idiot proof. so today we call intel for an RMA since newegg wont do it for cpus. and the guy we talked to said that the cpu was the least likely thing to be wrong is the cpu, and recomended trying other cpus in his mobo. :stick: DUH, i already tryed that, and unfortunatly no one in my crappy little town has them in. and i only know 3 people who have built computers, including myself, and we all have socket 478 still. there is only one thing that i can think of to make me believe the cpu is not bad. and that is the 4 pin connector for p4s. teh PSU we bought is a silverstone zues 650W. The msi mobo has teh 24 pin atx connector, the 4 pin connector, and for some reason, a 4 pin molex connector for the board. i had the 24 pin atx connected and also the molex, but no 4 pin p4 connector, because the PSU doesnt have one. I thought thats what the 4 extra pins on the main connector came from. also, after inspecting the PSU connections more, i noticed that the atx connector was missing pin 17, although i dont think its a problem because its just supposed to be a ground anyway. So basically, i was wondering if its somehow due to the PSU, or if its teh dead cpu. Im about 99% sure its the CPU, but some good advice would be appreciated :toast:

tha's ur problem that p4 4 pin molex is NEEDED just like a 4 pin molex on a vid card, it's extra power. buy you a psu that has one it is a MUST

First of all, it would have been better if you use paragraphs to make it easier to read.
Second, as far as I know, you will need the Pentium 4 4pin connector (not the molex one) connected as well.
and that is the 4 pin connector for p4s. teh PSU we bought is a silverstone zues 650W. I am not familiar with your PSU and why is it that it does not have any P4 4Pin connector, but hey, that's your number 1 cuplrit that way I see it.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong: the 4pin molex connector is for SLI operation and/or native SATA operation. Not sure though, but you can easily read the manual for more info.

no the manual is pretty crappy and doesnt explain much. im not sure why the molex is there, but look here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Showimage.asp?Mode=&Type=&Image=13-130-501-01.jpg%2C13-130-501-02.jpg%2C13-130-501-03.jpg%2C13-130-501-04.jpg%2C13-130-501-05.jpg%2C13-130-501-06.jpg&CurImage=13-130-501-02.jpg&Description=MSI+P4N+Diamond+Socket+T+%28LGA+775%29 +Nvidia+nForce+4+SLI+ATX+Intel+Motherboard+-+OEM , and see it to the lower left of the northbridge, right by the 1x pcix slot. the manual DOES say that the 4 pin connector and molex connector work together(for some reason) and a 450Watt PSU is reccomended. also, sorry im not an english major and didnt do paragraphs. didnt know i would be graded here :p:

well, so to test this, couldnt i undo the little clippie thing that gives the extra four pins, and plug that into the p4 connector? or is it keyed different?

i figured it out...i plugged in an 8 pin 12V line that had 4 pins that were keyed right for the connector, and all is fine now.

no i dont mean i plugged the wrong connector in, since the 4 pin didnt exist, i had to use the 8 pin instead.
