hey every1,
Am i missing something? I keep hitting over 60C load on my XP-120. Ambient temps are around 24C. My chip is a 130nm clawhammer so i know it puts out more heat, but it shouldnt be as much as that! :stick:

Any advice? Ive tried one AS5 dot in the middle of the proc, one Ceramique dot in the center, and honestly, smoothing out the ceramique with a razor across the entire IHS has given me better temps.

Are there any tricks to mounting it so i dont mess up the thermal goop?

Thanks in advance,
-Zach

Where do you read youre tempratures, you must check the bios for correct tempratures.

It can also be that the temp sensor is damaged

Could it be the result from overclocking

u can try to touch heatpipe on the heatsink.
for amd, it shouldn't be hot to make ur finger burn.
for intel prescott, ur finger possible to get burn..

Just kidding, u can try, but take ur risk. It should be cool or warm on idle.

Which way is the XP-120 facing, I recently bought a XP-90C and was told that it could face anyway. So I first thought about having the overlapping bit over the mosfets (heatpipes by the north bridge) when I booted up the temps were crap, 45idle and 65 load.
After a couple of reseats and a new layer of AS5 and still no better so I thought may as well turn the heatsink round, (overlapping the northbridge and heatpipes by the mosfets).
And with that I now get 30idle and 50load on a 4.25ghz Intel, might be worth trying it on yours. I was told you could have the heatsink anyway but obviously not.

Mine is on a DFI NF4 mobo, which is turned upside down in a lian-li case. So the heatpipes are facing upwards. Im reading temps from the BIOS and they are the same...39-42C idle

39 idle is about right for a 2.8ghz with 1.6v in it.

You've got at least a partial explanation for your temps. The heatpipes must be facing downwards or else the liquid/gas inside the pipes won't work properly (and you get nearly a performance of a no-heatpipe heatsink).

In a DFI NF4 you can turn the heatsink so the heatpipes face downward, to the side of the memory. However, you will not be able to use one of the orange slots (and the yellows are known to have several issues).
