It's starting to get into the 80's here finally.. the heat is starting to get to the crunchers and the temps in the rooms are getting pretty high... contemplating shutting them down for the summer. :(

Funny you mention shutting down. My division chief sent me an e-mail earlier requesting that I shut down all computers prior to leaving the office at night. I hope I can still crunch enough to have my lime green pie. :( Being the rebel that I am, I'll try to leave all of the systems on over the weekend (every other weekend, that is). :D

our production is going to decrease :(

I doubt it. troya just joined our team and his numbers to date are simply awesome. DDTUNG, as always, is a monster and his numbers will only get better in the days to come. I guess it's safe to assume that Plum Ugly will resume production again once he's taken care of his FaD business. We'll be alright. ;)

For about a week my a64 was running at ~63*C, I had to switch on the ac (and pray that it didn't need to be recharged again this year) to keep it from dying.

Edit: You can't shut em down now, only 6.7 days to #4! :slapass:

well as I said before in other threads, once Xeons get here and I can find a cheap PC-DL i'll have a Xeon cruncher up myself so I know it doesn't count for all that much but it will help I think to balance some people's summer-breack out

they are still on for now.... it is supposed to get up near 90F here by the end of the week... so they may have to sit out a couple days...

as summer aproaches all of our CPUs are going to run hotter, what we do about it is a person to person decision, i dont run 24/7 anymore becuase of heat and the power bill but you guys may think its worth it.

you could just try clocking them all back to stock.....

I know it's "EVIL" to say that on the XS board but..... ;)

I think once i finally get water cooled i will be ok for summer temps. That was my original plan when i put deposit down for G5 block, little did i know it would be summer before i got the block!

I think one of the points that most people miss about cooling the computer with water is that you are simply using a different medium to move the heat....

My problem and to some extent (I think) shmaa's problem is that the cpus are generating too much heat for the room; upgrading cooling on the cpus wont make the room any cooler, it will actually make the room warmer to some degree

Disposibleteen
05-10-2005, 01:08 PM
i agree with you there, keep a window open though and get some fresh air in there, maybe not out there in Nevada though, when i was there last summer it was hot as hell in Reno, wouldnt know about Vegas.

With watercooling i thought i might be able to lower cpu temp as compared to room ambient. So in summer room ambient temp goes up my cpu temps would remain in acceptable range.

Heat is getting to me over here too.

Since I started up D2OL both my rigs have been on 24/7 action. They are in my bedroom too. I like a coldish room with fresh air, now its kinda getting stuffy and humid but needs are a must I suppose ;)

Tornado cooling the A64 over a SLK-948U which isnt that loud at all. Ive got used to the sound of tornado's now. If one or both of my systems are off at night I alwyas think its too quiet in here lol.

Try 120F summertime, and dont believe what you see on national weather about our temps in the summer (I think the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Bureau pays offs the weatherman or keeps the thermometer in the shade next to a fan in the summertime)
Add in about 20mph wind and you have one heck of a hair dryer ;)

Yeah feeling you on that shmaa in my room ... the celly was at 78 C added a fan and some more airflow got it down to 65 C. I think my room is hotter and defiantely doesnt get any ac (when the thing is on).

Muah ha ha ha ha ha! So LBM doesn't have the staying power to keep schooling the zilla! :stick: I knew you guys would find some lame excuse to bow to my will!

Just know that once the rigs are off I will remind you guys daily that you are getting owned! Mmmmmm... Blue pie!

This will also give me an opportunity to try out my new kitten catapult!

Instead of buying that next rig just get a good window AC :D

Same problem I had.... but that prob is now solved... I'm listening to the soothing hum of a window AC unit right now... :toast:

which I'm also told... oddly enough.. is the same sound that blue pie makes.. interesting.

I guess summer is going to weed out the "not so Xtreme" peeps amongst us! :stick: :stick:

BTW... I think this "stock" we have been hearing about is an upper level of Overclocking where the FSB and the CPU become one harmonious piece of equipment... capable of reaching the upper plateau of overclocked bliss.

I had to clock my AXP down, but the Duron in the basement I'm trying to clock up...I've got it running at 2.3ghz now...lets see if she'll hold.

BTW...it's gotten alot windyer here...and alittle cooler :D So maybe I can clock my AXP back up to normal....

I'm hoping to have the window unit in again soon...I couldn't do it today since it's going to cool off later, once it starts to heatup, it'll be in...and hopefully blowing on my rig  allowing for a higher overclock=more cans

Just kidding. Actually I'm in the process of searching for a suitable location at the office to house all the DX rigs(there'll be nearly 30 of them), some place nice and cool.

Maybe this is not the case in Canada... but in FL, sticking a fan in the window to "vent out" hot air will bring in more hot air and probably get you into the 100s F! Probably the same for Nevada too I'm guessing.

Too keep temps low, my computer is no long in a case. I used the Motherboard tray from the case and now it's sitting beside me...with my window open (it's nice and windy today and it's also cool  ) Plus when I get the AC unit in one of these days...(once it warms up and the planets aline in just the right spot...lol)

Dig a ring or U in your backyard about 6 feet deep and place copper tubing coated with something to keep it from decomposing then pump water through it to a large radiator which has a fan mounted to it blowing into the cruncher room.

or put a bunch of waterblocks on all the machines and cool them all with the same loop :P

Might need a heck of a pump to do them all that way, though. Just running one or two large low restriction rads and a low restriction loop under the ground (the longer the better) would probably be the best.
