Right now I have 4 vantec stealth 120mm fans. I'm thinking of swapping them out for the panaflo ultra high speed. What is the noise difference between the 2. Also, w/ fan controller, can the rpm of the panaflo be reduced enough to give a much quieter fan? I'm really unimpressed by the airflow of the vantecs.

The noise difference will be huge. You will have to raise your voice when talking and use head phones for everything. Sooooo not worth it in my opinion.

Yeah the noise difference is pretty big, go for the Panaflo Medium Speed it pushes 86cfm's at 35dba.

or even the low speed.

If one gets a fan controller, can the ultra high be run as quite as 35 db, and if so what kind of CFM will it be pushing ?

I tried to find you a download of the sound of the fan but I couldnt find anything for that fan. Their are others though if you go to www.sidewindercomputers.com

thanks for all the replies guys. I think i'm going with the panaflo medium speed fan without a fan controller. is it possible to sleep in the same room as a pc with 5 of the medium speed fans?

I dont know how much you can tolerate, but 5 35dba fans is going to be pretty loud in this case you may want to go with the low speed or get a fan controller.

has anybody looked at the heat resistance (efficiency in keeping the temps down) for the low speed vs. the med speed vs. the high speed vs. the ultra high speed? Reason I ask is that I finally got my mem to do 315MHz FSB stable, but superpi takes CPU up to 58*C

I was thinking of rearranging my fans to put two high speeds in there, one that exhausts out of back of case and one for the xp-120 aimed toward a lapped cpu/hs. but if the med will do, then there is no reason to go with such a noisy system.

The ultra high speed on a fan controller at 7v will give you M1A performance almost exactly, and at 5v...L1A performance.

thanks so much EnJoY. I hope I understand what you're saying: with a fan controller providing 7V of power to the U1A panaflo, the fan sounds almost identical to the M1A, and at 5V of power the U1A sounds like the L1A. Does this mean that anyone that plans on getting a L1A or M1A is wasting money by not just going with a U1A and just messing with the molex connector ala Silent PC (considering that at sidewinder, the U1A is in actuality ~$4 cheaper than either)? Is there a fan controller you recommend? Should i rig some type of a switch mechanism myself (it'll be my first time, but hell, this stuff is actually fun)? I've been looking quite fondly at the noise isolator: http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/noissi5.html
