Has anyone tried the s754 32 bit Semprons, they are about the same price as socket A and have the on chip memory contoller and hypertransport tech. The boards are 10-20 $ more tho, but you can put in an A64 chip in the future for 64 bit compatibility.

Yes, performance for crunching of course.

I think it might be the same as A64, maybe off by 3-4 cands every 6 hour update. Again, ask I found nemo what his does daily.

His sig says about 100 aday. But I wouldn't be surprised if a dedicated rig were to do more

Ok I can get a sempron setup for 215 (2600+, zalman cooler, epox 8KDA3K, GF4MX) or a celeron D setup for 120ish (refurb IS7-V or whatever with onboard graphics and a celeron D from classifieds) not sure about cooler for that though. Are the semprons as good as newcastles at similar clocks or no? Should I just take the celeron?

I guarantee the Sempron would win out ... i have celeron D clocked @ 3.8. The Celly D performs on par prolly with a 3.8 Pentium but no HT. 90 nano sempron should clock nicely and since D2ol seems not to have a cache preference it should put up some serious numbers and very low dock time.
Just put it this way my Celly D even at 3.8 doesnt seem to out perform shmaa's mobile Barton @ 2.4 ghz. A sempron should clock to 2.4 ghz if not a lot higher ..... even at that speed a sempron would take out the aging Athlon XP.
The only thing I can vouche for the celly is board support and the fact NF3 250 chipset would most definately limit overclocks. There are socket 754 Nf4 boards cant tell you how good the overclocking options are and since they are pretty cheap they probably have few and we know the Biostar and ECS ones are going to have few if any. The x factor is the DFI Nf3 250 lanparty that board is pretty sweet but still might limit OC's and is 100$ easy.
I am intreseted in a sempron system so I might give it a try. Shoot for as cheap as this MSI nf4 board I just might. 150 dollars would do it!

My DFI NF3 does 391 HTT. Won't limit. Just about any NF3 board should do 300 HTT easily. I'll start saving for a sempron rig if its that much faster :) Or maybe I'll work on my phasechange units so I can switch this newcastle over to dedicated D2OL and get my 2.8ghz clawhammer (I hope it will do that 24/7) on my gaming rig with D2OL after I finish benching...
A mobile XP would also wipe the floor with Celeron.

When ur dealing with multis of 8 it will ! Like 8 X 300 is only 2400 mhz .... That DFI seems to be the only one that does high HTT. Im not the only one with this opinion www.xbitlabs.com also has shares my thoughts. That DFI is also 100$ and there are cheaper NF4 boards for socket 754 just dont know how good BIOS's are. Also in reference to the Celeron D you can get IS7 E for less than 50 dollars used. That DFI is still over 100 negating any price advatage the sempron had over the Celeron. Although I believe a socket 754 Sempron will put up better numbers then Celly D even at 3.8 ghz.
