View Full Version : Hitting a brick wall at 167MHz FSB ?

I can get my 1.8A to 165x18 stable at 1.75V BIOS (Epox 4PEA, BIOS Dec 03) and 166x18 at 1.775V (undervolt to 1.72 under load). By stable, I mean I can run all benchmarks, loop 3DMark 3 times, prime for hours and hours. However, if I push the chip to 167MHz FSB, no matter what volt I give it, I just can't even do a Sandra CPU bench :( Happens even at 1:1 so ram issue is ruled out. Any idea what is wrong with my CPU/main ? :( If you have an Epox 4PEA/+ or 4GEA/+, can you run higher than 166 FSB and with what BIOS ?
Many thanks :)
Edit: it's not a specific issue at 167MHz FSB. Same thing happens at higher than 167.

On an epox 4pea+, I can run fine at >167fsb, on my 2.26 i've had it to 171-175 before, using the 12/3/02 bios

i have a 2400@3000 with a P4PE at vcore default with stupid air cooling.. so 166fsb stable but a little artefact in 3dmark (why?!?!)
167 more artefact
168 don't enter in windows
if i raise vcore no changes...
so 165 is the limit for my board... a orribl€ auss P4PE...
but think that is only this model so unlucky, or hope it will be the only....

I'm running my 2.66 @ 3.44 or higher on a 4PEA+.. thats 172fsb minimum with no issues and 100% stability.
think it's the 10/30/02 bios.. at least thats what sandra says, I'll look next time I reboot and let you know if it's different
I had the 4PEA/4GEA boards not long ago and wasn't able go run higher than 171FSB....
With the ASUS P4PE I didn't have a problem for 178MHz...
I'd attempt to eliminate a few things. First try putting your memory at 1:1, conservative timings. That should eliminate if that's a problem/limit or not. If you can get higher, it's your memory (or settings). Then try max timings at 1:1. Then try 4:3, then 3:4 (if you can).

I am running 175MHz FSB on 4G4A+ with P4 1.6A, and since the 4PEA+ should be a better overclocker, I think the limiting factor is the CPU for you Niko.

My 4g4a can do 180+ completely stable with my old 2.26@3ghz+ on water.

Niko just wondering, did you lock your AGP/PCI's? If you're using the regular dividers, perhaps one of your devices can't really handle the high speeds.

Of course I did :/
I reckon Intel locked the max OC on some of their CPU's, includine mine, so people can't OC too much :p

Of course I did :/Haha, sorry! I should have known better.
Do you have another motherboard you can test with?

Well, a friend of mine has an IT7 max2 ver2 but it's......umm....gay :p I'll test it on that board anyway :p Thanks for the suggestion :)
Now Intel, get your damn retail 1.8A C1 out or I will switch back to AMD :p
My 2.4B can reach 164FSB @ 1.7V 100% stable on my BE7.
However 165FSB wont even post :(
I dont know if its the cpu or mainboard holding me back.
Memory is 1:1

I've done 175 fsb on a cold night with my 4pea and 2.66B....
must be the cpu....
let us know if you get higher on the IT7 though :D

You're probably right; must be the CPU. I got into Windows at 172 Mhz FSB fine. The annoying thing is that it runs Prime, Folding or benchmarks fine for hours at 166x18 but can't even run Sandra CPU bench at 167x18  That really pisses me off  I don't have a chance to test her on the IT7 because it's sold :p
Btw, have the new BIOSes got you the 3:4 without modding yet ?

I just got thsi board myself but I have more testing to do like the new bios, and different DIMM slots for my ram...:)

dexx, I've been testing the BE7 with a 1.6a Malay. Cooling with a MCX4000. I'm topping out at 174fsb with Xtremeddr PC3500, 168 with TwinMos -5ns Winbond, 165 with Geil PC3500 ulta 512. All tested at 3:4 ratio. AT 1:1 175fsb is the highest I can go.
This board undervolts very bad in my opinion. Both the bios and MBM report vdimm at 2.64 and vcore at 1.65. Though I think at 175fsb or 2800mhz this chip is topping out aircooled.
I have a 2.26 coming in on Monday to try. Hoping to get my hands on a IT7 this week.

Sorry that IT7 is turning into my Daughters system.
Poor girl She'll only have a 2.4 C1 to stuff in it.

If you ask me anything over 160 is a bonus.

Awww, I remeber the days when 66 MHz was standard, and 68 MHz was turbo baby!

The "brickwall" I mentioned keeps increasing :p It is 171 now and still going higher :p Many thanks to macci for the Vcore mod :)

What have you done in order to make it boot@higher freq? more volts or burn in? (if you burned it in, please mention with which prog..i can't find any wa to make my 1.6A stable @ 167mhz FSB as well :/)

Nah it was just the hot weather and the low Vcore holding me back :p
This very CPU did 3.2GHz in a Vapo PE on the same mobo.
I've only tried up to 171 on air so far and she benched for a couple hours fine :), will push her higher tomorrow.
