I heard guild wars is supposed to come out at the end of the month. Anyone recommend this MMORPG or would WoW be the better choice. Guild Wars = Free Access :: WoW = Monthly fees

As much flak as you see WoW catch. I played EQ for 5 years on and off. They update much more frequently and the amount of bugs and how fast they are repaired is much better than EQ was. Now EQ set a new standard. WoW improved on that, but the gameplay isn't leaps and bounds ahead of EQ. The graphics are great, though. The questing system rocks compared to eq's mindless grinding in dungeons(which could be fun, unless you were trying to get to 60 when that was the lvl cap).

So yea there are monthly fees, but it seems with games like WoW, EQ, EQ2 etc, you get what you pay for monthly fee wise. The little guys usually have great ideas, and whatnot, but don't have the capital to fund them, and don't want to charge the same premium the bigger guys do.

so will people start getting divorces over WoW? or let their kids fry in cars? cuz if not, then clearly EQ is better still. /bad joke.

LOL not sure about kids frying in cars, but I'm sure there were some divorces that were related to, but not directly because of, EQ.

i heard that some person forgot he locked his kids in his car, and played EQ without taking the kid out, i think it was a child.

i'll google it, maybe i'm thinking of something else.

i talked to svenn on xfire about WoW, if you check his profile he has a crazy amount of WoW hours, and he gave a very sound arguement for why to chose wow of Gw. but if you are cheap and don't wish to pay for it, then i guess you are stuck with GW. even though wow would seem much better.

I just cancelled my WoW subscription. Only b/c I don't have enough time to play, and playing maybe 1-2 hours a day just doesn't make the game interesting to me. If I had enough time to play like 4 hours or more a day like I did EQ, then I'd love WoW.

Working on call can suck.

wow is a great game, and its really not that bad, cuz u can just dothe game card option, and pay for 2 months at a time for like 35 bux or sumthing, few bux extra but no biggie. I played for about 2.5 months, then my comp got mest up, and i didnt feel like reinstalling cuz my time was almost up and i didnt have money for another time card. but really teh game rules, i liked it alot better than eq but that might be just because i like war craft so damn much :) anyways, i would go with wow of ff11 which im about to start :)

oh ya, ps. i wanna drive a tow truck .... those things are kool, plus alot of em in my area just chillax in parkign lots lol

Lol, the job is ok. It is a family business and just getting money for some things like my new spiffy computer hah. Can't wait to go back to school in the fall. When you work on call it is hard to have a social life, never can plan anything at all without taking the day off. Then some of the people you deal with accusing you of messing up parts of their car you never even looked at, not to mention touched.

But WoW rules for those who was time, to be on topic heh.

WOW is horrible...

A matter of opinion. If you aren't a MMORPG guy you won't like it, but it is ahead of eq, and not sure about eq2. Ironically everquest had sucky quests, but great end game type encounters that made the game. Like taking down Nagafen for the first time when lvl 50 was the cap.

Without any reasons to backup why the game sucks it is hard to take your opinion seriously.

MMORPGs take time, and if you aren't willing to put it in, you probably won't care for it that much. Hence why I don't play it really, I don't have the time to put in that I had for EQ. That is why I loved EQ so much, b/c I had plenty of time to put into it. If I had the time I'd sit down and quest/lvl/raid with WoW. I haven't had a chance to check out the new honor system but it sounds like it'll make PvP alot funner.

Actually the beef on Guild Wars is that while they are free, they plan to release either monthly or quarterly add-ons. The add-ons will be required to continue so they will in effect, still be getting their money.

WOW is my first MMORPG. I have been an avid video game player since my Atari 2600 and colecovision and I really started playing PC games right about the time the Original Half Life came out. I can honestly say that WOW is one of the most fun games I have ever played. It is amazingly time consuming though. My Shaman just hit lvl 59 and I have 17 days of playtime invested. Yes that is over 400 hrs in a little over 3 months. Ouch. Even with the monthly fee it is by far the cheapest game per hour played that I have ever owned at right around $.10/hour. Compare that to my Knight of the Old republic for my Xbox which took about 40 hrs to beat at about $1.25/hr. I cannot comment on Guild Wars. I hear that it is pretty good, but I understand that the pvp content is pretty weak at this time. I'll be sticking to WOW myself.

haven't played gw but have been meaning to try it out, honestly why not play both?

gw so far is a one time fee, which is much less than 1 year worth of Wow.

btw so far I love Wow, all you need to adore this game is a good guild that does events/instances

I have played all 3, starting with EQ2, then Guild Wars, and finally ending up with WoW. EQ2 was my first mmorpg and was fun at first but by the time I got to lvl 30 I had gotten kind of bored with it. I then tried Guild Wars and must admit the graphics look amazing and it plays butter smooth on my system unlike EQ2. But I couldn't get into the gameplay. I guess coming from playing EQ2 I felt like they were too restrictive on where you could go. It felt less like you could run around where ever you wanted to explore and more like they had this path laid out for you to follow to advance through the game. The one thing that I did like about GW was the ability to warp from city to city once you finally reached a city. This is a nice feature and did keep the amount of time you spent running around just to get somewhere to a bare minimum.
I am now playing WoW and have to say for me it is way more fun that either of the previous two games. Now granted I have yet to put in the same amount of hours as with EQ2 but the questing system seems so much better. The quests are fun and arent too long to get boring. That was the issue I was starting to have with EQ2 was it seemed like certain quests were never going to end. WoW also makes me feel like I am in more control of the combat system, much more so than EQ2.

I know this has strayed a bit from the WoW vs GW question. While I do admit that GW is attractive for someone who doesnt want to shell out the monthly fee, it just felt way to restrictive and structured for me. While WoW I feel like I am much more in control of my character in the world. I also like the fact that I can explore pretty much anywhere I want and am not restricted to a set path to follow.

I felt I should add to this thread after I finally decided to play GW never having any real MMO history.

The game is good for the amount of money you pay. As with what everyone is saying the quests are painfully structured. The graphics are wonderful.

PVP is very fun but something you just can't place seems to be missing.

The only downsides I have seen are the number of bugs here and there. Usually that is fixed with monthly fees.

Question for WoW players. Whats the item drop system for monsters like?

There are no monthly fees for the game or for fixes in the game. The game get better every month. They makes small changes that affect game play (i.e. monster no longer stay in area of effect for elementalists, they scatter). They are adding a new character class soon (Assasin) and its all free of charge. Excellent game!!

Your opinion, I like the instancing system they have in place when you leave a town.

It depends on what you are fighting. Beasts will drop meat, and other items like armor, weapons.
Humanoids drop coin, cloths, and items, etc
All creatures have a chance to drop black, green, blue, and purple items.
Black items are worthless. Sell those to a vendor.
Green items are a little common. They can have some great stats on them.
Blue items are rares. They drop much less than green items do, and sometimes have better stats.
Purple items are epic. They are a rare find. Most of the time the stats on epics are great. But there are some that suck also.

I have found that Green items are the rarest items, where blue and purple will drop more often. I have been playing for a few months now and I am getting ready to ascend and I still have not come accross a green drop. I believe the order from most common to rarest is this off the top of my head.

Black - worst
Blue - ok
Purple - good
Gold - better
Green - best

WoW all the way. I played guild wars and WoW and in my opinion WoW rocks the house over guild wars :)

Guild wars is nice, but it's basicly a single player game in group. Whereass wow is a "real" RPG where the world is a lot more influenced over time by actions.

My GF plays Wow and swears by it - I've tried it a few times and have reached less than lvl10 before giving up, I just can't get into it. Same thing happened with Guildwars - made a bit of progress but just couldn't get involved, it did feel very structured I agree with that point. Also, FFXI wouldn't even run, some stupid error after like 3 hours of installing crap on my machine.

My views have been jaded by Star Wars Galaxies, IMO this was the king of all mmorpg's, so diverse and complex a game that all the mmorpg's I try now seem quite pointless and desolate. I will have to try once more to get into WoW due to a recent "update" on SWG which seems to have rendered the entire galaxy a baren wasteland, its seems only about 10-20% of ppl are playing that were on pre-update. Either that or face the harsh reality of RL....:stick:

Guild Wars is very good and all, but it gets old fairly quickly. I would much rather devote my time toward FFXI/WoW. (No :banana::banana::banana::banana:ing about FFXI vs. WoW please, they are both good games.)

WoW is for 10 year old kids who are retarded and click 5-10 times every minute.

NOW, How boring would that be? Very... Plus the month system is :banana::banana::banana:, it puts into your subconcious: "come on i have to fulfil my 2.5(or whatever) months." This further enhances my logic that it's designed for kids with loads of time and idleness -> laziness.

Diablo II looked more fun at the time. But, that was probably because i was young and a fool.
