View Full Version : MSI Neo2 Platinum Decent OC'er?

Ok, I know the preferred OC'ing boards are ABit and DFI, I have an ABit Socket A board myself as seen in my sig.....the only reason I ask about the MSI is because I was considering going AMD64, but I can't choose an nforce based chipset from either ABit or DFI with an AGP card :( which is what I have, the 6800GT to be exact, and no I'm not going to buy a PCI-E, I would barely have enough to go AMD64. Selling really isn't an option as I've pretty much never been able to sell any computer part of mine =/
The MSI Neo2 can lock the AGP/PCI bus, can configure DRAM voltages, Timings, Speed, you can configure the CPU Frequency, all the basics needed for OC'ing........
Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with it, or could recommend for it or against it as a decent OC'ing board.
I'd be looking to get the AMD64 3200+ winchester core, or possibly holding out until the venice cores become widely available although I don't know what the price would be.
Anyway, just wondering how phesable or realistic it'd be to get it upwards of 2.6GHz and using a 250+MHz CPU Frequency (Yes my RAM can go that high so there is no concern there ;) )
Thanks for any information or advice you can provide

Its fine. Currently Im waiting for the DFI Nforce3 socket 939 AGP board. Ill bet thats better :)

Yeah, works fine here :)
I don't have much problems with the board except it sometimes doesn't boot properly. The USB Bracket says something about floppy drive controllere. I tried everything but nothing seems to solve this. I haven't had this problem for over a week now so I'm happy. Also, I didn't notice others having this so it should be fine.

Wow no need to slap me :( :D lol Sorry, theres so many forums and threads here, I don't know, just didn't think there'd be a thread for basically every motherboard.
THOUSAND FORGIV-UH-NESS PREASE MASSA :toast:
Anyone encounter any SATA problems? Only heard in one place which I can't even recall now that sometimes OC'ing can cause SATA instabilities, but hell the same was said about my NF7 board too
Stryg - you know for sure a DFI nforce3 will soon be released? Any clues when, might be best for me just to wait then
Well, they're not saying much, but I put my faith in sometimes within the next month...
You can keep up with the news and stuff at www.dfi-street.com :)
The slap was a friendly one... :D

Psht, I was told to ask a mod if I don't know what section.....who wants to wait forever just to see where to post something? Besides it had to do with OC'ing...I see other things in there that could be moved! PSHT I SAY....
Yeah I actually have an account at that dfi-street
Don't post there much though. I'm still debating whether I even want to spend the money on going 64. It's either $330 on the MSI board and a 3200+ winnie or like $250 on a WC setup with DD parts and a weaponcore
Decisions decisions
Don't know if I could get that CPU up to 2.6GHz....I see your sig says you have it at 2.7GHz, what kind of cooling is that and if I may ask what kind of voltage is that using :D
The main benefit of 64 in my eyes would be of course being ready for 64bit windows, but that's actually a small reason. Main reason is the memory bandwidth that I'd be able to gain especially when I OC'd my RAM.
It a 3200+ CBBHD 0448 SPAW, 1.5vcore, Zalman 7000B-Cu. Its a semi-lucky one :)
If it wasn't for the impossibility of overclocking a Prescott on air, dunno if it still like that, I would go for Pentium any day...

Well I moderate at another set of forums (well actually I quit but that's besides the point :p ) but as far as everyones posted there the prescotts are still hot little beasts.
I prefer AMD over intel 'any day' though :D
Seems like those zalmans are indeed very popular HSF's
Thanks for the info :)

Nubius - The K8N Neo2 Platinum is an excellent AGP board. There are many of us here who have had excellent results using this board. Using the search function, you should be able to find a wealth of information and results of forum members using this board. I am attaching a link to my everyday system settings, which is running 24/7 stable and error-free crunching for our D2OL team.

By the way, I'd advice holding out until the Venice CPU comes out. ;)

By the way, I'd advice holding out until the Venice CPU comes out. that's exactly what I planned on doing....but I gotta see how much it'll cost too =/ but by the time it comes out then I should have more than enough saved up.....also the DFI nforce3 MIGHT come out around next month, so I might just wait a month, keep putting cash in the bank and see what happens.
Very nice OC results....of course I'd more than likely be going 3200+ not 3500+ because of price reasons........would it be a realistic assumption thinking I could get 2.6GHz on that? From various user reports I've seen anywhere from 2.4-2.8GHz with air on the 3200+ winnie, so I guess it's all about luck of the draw mainly huh?

Overclocking will always be about luck of the draw. It's your skill and abilities to tweak that's going to allow to make the most out of any situation, even if you end up with a crappy clocker. ;)
By the way, that screenshot is with a Newcastle 3500+. I had absolutely no luck with the several Winchesters that I played with early on when it was first introduced.

I had no probs with winnies with a later board, 2.7ghz out of my 3000 was no problem on air.

I had no difficulties obtaining clocks in the 2600MHz to 2700Mhz range. My gripes were with the memory controller's inability to push my RAM in a stable manner.

the neo2 plat pwns, and about the sata, u gotta use the 2 sata ports nearest the cpu, cuz the otehr ones will oc and mess up the drives :) other than that and a couple other quirks, i love it ...

I had absolutely no luck with the several Winchesters that I played with early on when it was first introduced. Well I read that they don't want to perform as good as the higher frequencies because of the 90nm architecture, something the venice is supposed to have fixed with their new silicon layout....don't know if that is the case though.

Yeah I guess in retrospect it was a dumb question lol, but I guess I was meaning just in general if it was realistic, because you know some CPU's simply won't hit certain speeds kind of deal....I don't know anymore I'm ranting :p

lol, the msi is ez to oc with, the menu is really easy, and the newer mobos work just fine with the winchesters, it was just originally a bios prolem, they fixed that round xmas tho i think. i like it alot :)
