As stated in the title I have an athlon XP 1700+ running at the original 1.47 ghz. Its running on an asus A7V266 motherboard, and I was curious as to what I could safly overclock my CPU too. Also where can I pick up a decent fan/heatsink combo that would cool it better?
Thanks,
Brett
Stangman20,
Welcome to Xtreme :)
I can't tell you what better cooling would be until you tell me what current cooling you're using :D

thanks! :D
I am not sure how to describe it other than it is the original heat sink/fan combo that it came with when I ordered it, and its running at 120-125 degrees right now.
Good enough. I would go with the Thermalright SLK-800 heatsink, and a 80MM fan of your choice. The main deciding factor is going to be how much noise you want the fan to make...and of course, the louder, the better-performing. Here's a great site w/ excellent prices on both the SLK-800 heatsink & some nice 80MM fans at all sorts of noise/cfm levels :)

wtf?
Anyways, I went ahead and ordered that heatsink you recommended as well as Vantec 80 mm tornado fan. It pushes a healthy 84.1 cfm of air, and from what i read is quite noisy, but its not like that matters much. :D
Now the waiting game for them to come in.
Oh, and I am 75% done with my WU.

stangman, your mobo uses the KT266(non -A) chipset, which doesnt OC very well at all and has plenty of problems. You certainly want to put a new motherboard somewhere soon on your upgrade path. A new KT400 or nForce2 motherboard would make your life easier.
As far as OCing goes when u get ur new HSF, you may want to focus more on multiplier OCing rather than FSB.
Tornado? wow, hope u like noise :)
Good Luck!;)

I was curious as to my mobo's overclocking ability. I haven't spent much research time on computer mobos recently, but I assume that if I bought a KT400 mobo I could use my current 1700+ processor and PC2100 DDR memory until I could afford a faster processor and better memory?
Noise never bothered me too much, you should hear my mustang. :D

yeah, you can transfer your current CPU/RAM to a KT400

Hi, welcome to Xtreme,
I'm using an Coolermaster HHC001 on my Athlon XP 1700+, and it keeps it cool enough i think... only the noise... *Aaaah*
There isn't much difference between my mainboard temp, and my cpu temp...
BTW
I had a MSI K7T266Pro-R (it uses the same chipset as yours, it sucked at OC'ing, and it was broke, had multiple failures :/ but now i bought an Abit KD7-Raid which suits me just fine, i really like it compared to my MSI... i only need to get my waterblock in, and to unlock this cpu then i can see howfar it'll go...
