Guys, i have managed to end up with three Dothan Cpu's due to experimenting with diff ones when the Dothan o/c craze hit last year. I am an avid gamer and member of a BF-V/BF 2 clan and was wondering if you reckon a Dothan (overclocked to around 2.6Ghz) and a gig of RAM would be an adequate machine to run a games server on? I would probably put it in an old ASUS board when the adapter becomes available.

Im afraid that although i will quite happily play around with overclocking and know quite a bit about the practical side of stuff i dont have the solid background knowledge in PC hardware. By this i mean that Dothan's are referred to as 'bandwidth starved', but i dont quite understand what this means or wether it would have a detrimental impact on a gaming server setup?

Any comments most welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Cyp.

I'd say it's a bit early to tell on current Dothans whether this would be practical. It should, however, work fine if you have the spare parts.

"Bandwidth starved" means the processor's performance is hindered by a lack of memory bandwidth. Current platforms only support single channel DDR333, using the Asus socket adapter however should provide much higher levels of memory performance.

Generally, a dedicated game server is going to be better off on a P4, HyperThreading should make for a smoother experience since most game server clients make good use of multithreading, and a P4 platform is (at the moment) going to allow you higher memory density (i.e. more RAM without problems) so that would be my recommendation were you starting from scratch - however, since you have the Dothan spare I say go for it, and 1GB should definitely be the minimum

yea use a HT machine or a Xeon and fold aswell!

Fold? Excuse the n00b. :)
Its mainly just that i had the bits lying around..

folding is using your computers spare cycles (when its idle) to crunch numbers for molucule and virus pattern simmulations.

you guys are missing the point that he already has chips... we do know that the server would run cool :P

how do they oc?

My 1.5 will do 2.25, and i currently have the 1.7 at 2.55. (both with pin mod) My 1.8 still in its box. :)

(i dont think the Aopen likes FSB higher than 150)

For game servers you need to be more concerned with your internet connection (can it handle hosting games) and the amount of RAM you have.

Even at 2Ghz with a Gig of RAM, your Dothan should be able to handle a moderatly full server. But you will need a good pipe.

You read my mind - any idea what i would need? Would it depend on how big a server i was hosting eg 24 man vs 32 man?
I am getting a 4 meg pipe soon with 400kbps upload speed. I might be able to get an 8meg line pretty soon too.

Hehe bulldog eh?, I'm with them, speeds are nice almost 500kB/s d/l and 60kB/s u/l. anyway back OT: as recons said your system should fly even at 2ghz clock, because the centrino has such a huge cache meaning it goes to memory les that the other 2 procs also it helps eliviate the dothans slightly weaker FPU, as such you wont see any realistic slow downs, bump up the speed to 2.5ghz and it will have no slow downs.

Yeah Bulldog - maybe 8meg with UK Online too. At last we are catching up with the rest of Europe. ;)
