Hello.
First post here !!!
Hope you will understand my question (sorry, I'm French!!!).
I wish to buy a INTEL PENTIUM 4 650, but I saw in the Asus CPU SUPPORT page that the INTEL 650 is supported on the P5AD2-E Premium since the 1004 bios version. The problem is that my P5AD2-E Premium has the 1003 (write on the EPROM).
Do you think that I can put the INTEL 650 CPU on my P5AD2-E Premium and flash the bios after that? Do you think I will be able to flash the bios? Do you think that the system will boot first with Intel Pentium 4 650, and then it will be possible to flash the bios to make the CPU recognized as an INTEL 650???
Thank you for answering, it’s very important for me, please!!!

Does your current BIOS support other 600 series chips? If it does, the system should at least post, but I could be wrong.

Hello.
Thanks for your answer.
No!!!!
That is the problem and the question I wish to have a answer.
On the Asus CPU support page, they said that INTEL 650 is supported SINCE bios version 1004. But I have the 1003 on my MOBO.
So I wish to know if it will be possible to boot on the bios 1003, and after, make the bios recognize the 650 by upgrading bios to 1004.
Hope you will understand my question...
thank you for answering,

Not sure, but I think Asus is mailing new BIOS chips with the 1004 flashed, you are not alone with this problem. You should contact your the Asus distributor in your country.
I was lucky because I flashed 1004 when I still had it running with 5xx processor.

This is what's most likely to happen, which is what happened to me with my GIGABYTE motherbaord which came with BIOS F4 and I needed the F8 for the processor to be recognized during the installation of Windows XP. The motherboard will boot with the P4 650 but you will need to flash the BIOS to the 1004--P4-650 (3.4E GHz, 800 FSB, L2:2MB, EM64T, HT) (http://www.asus.com.tw/support/cpusupport/cbios_dl/cbios_dl.aspx?MB=P5AD2-E%20Premium&CPU=P4-650%20(3.4E%20GHz,%20800%20FSB,%20L2:2MB,%20EM64T, %20HT)&BIOS=1004) before you even try to install windows. Otherwise you'll see this an ERROR MESSAGE SUCH AS THIS ONE (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/dob1224/DFIBIOSERROR.jpg).
Read the motherboard's MANUAL and fallow the HOW TO flash your BIOS with a floppy and once you update them to the 1004, the installation/se-up will be painless.

Just put my computer together yesterday and the P4 650 will run on the Asus p5AD2-E without a BIOS flash to 1004. I ran it for a few hours before flashing and it worked fine. My MOBO came with BIOS version 1002 on the chip, so I think you'll be okay with your 1003. Once I flashed the BIOS, the CPU section in the BIOS had the new features (speedstep, etc).
However, a couple of times since flashing the BIOS to 1004, I've received an error message at POST indicating that the "overclocking failed" and to "restore default settings". Not sure what this message is referring to, since I haven't overclocked anything. Anyone know why the board would be saying that?

As someone has already mentioned, bios 1002 and up will allow you to boot-up with a 6XX series chip. You can also flash the bios as it boots up using the EZ-Flash bios program.
Download the bios 1004 off the Asus website, read the directions on flashing since I don't remember them but I know you need to rename the bios file a new name on a floppy and once the boot-up screen appears you press ALT-F2 and the EZ-bios program will start and allow you to flash the bios with the file on the floppy. Good Luck
