okay if i o/c'd my processor w/o upping v.core would that shorten the life?
if i o/c'd my processor w/o upping v/core would that make more heat?
my only 2 questions thanx for ur input :)

What causes heat on your CPU is a combination of clockspeed, vcore and workload.
Upping the clockspeed will increase the heat produced and potentially reduce the lifespan.
Upping the vcore as well as the clockspeed will increase the heat produced even more hence reducing lifespan more.
The hotter and faster it runs, the less likely its gonna last as long. :)

who really needs their hardware to last more than a year and a half anyway, except maybe my grandma.

I think nemo does, he was using a coppermine untill a month ago.
I don't think there is any way to really know how long a component will last in stock form or overclocked/overvolted untill enough of them start dieing a trend can be noticed. They wont start dieing untill 5 to 10 years from now though, problably even longer. I ran a coppermine on air cooling at 2.1V for a few months just to see how long it would last. The system outlasted the PSU which developed condensation because I kept the machine out in my garage because the goal of the experiment was to see how fast it could die. I hooked a new PSU up to it and gave the CPU some LN2 without any insulation. I was able to get it running at 1153MHz (IIRC) for about 15 minutes before it died completely. (Well it could be the mobo or the CPU, but I don't keep spares around)
If someone want to waste money they could crank the voltage on one of their A64s and leave it running, I can only afford to do something like that with a cpu that I couldn't sell easily.

overclocking has never actually been proven to shorten life, at least if it is i've never seen the proof. dont worry about it
