View Full Version : From generic to excellent PSU?

So I've had this generic 430w psu with 18a on the 12v. I'm sure it's a piece of junk (justpc inc.) I have a OCZ modstream 450 being shipped to me now. I am wondering if there are any noticeable differences with adding a better psu? Better OC'n, better graphics, better benches, better anything? If you used to have a junk psu and upgraded, let me know if you were able to notice anything at all (besides the fact of knowing that it wont blow up on you)... :)

you wont notcie much right away (maybe a little better OC if there are more amps on the 12v rail) but your system will last longer since the OCZ PSUs provide much cleaner power than many generic ones will.

P.S. - Welcome to XS, where we have more crazy overclockers than you can shake a stick at.

You won't notice much on regular use of the computer, you'll notice a lot more when you overclock, having the power you need behind you is great. I've got an OCZ PSU and I know that I do not have to worry about not having enough power for my parts. Welcome to XS, good luck with your PSU. :)

thx for the welcome. I'm on like 6 other forums, I'm surprised I just found this one. I've heard from other people that since the modstream isn't "hardwired" but you have cables you plug into the unit, it isn't as good. What you all think?

The connection differnce is not noticable. This psu is basicly a powerstream execpt modular, alot of ppl buy it just for that reason. Less clutter in the case

Oh welcome to xtreme, and i noticed more gpu clocks switching psu's in the past.

I would never buy a modstream myself though becuase if you think about it, more connectors means more resistance.

Do you use a molex to connect your hdd or do you solder the wires directly to the hdd? That little amount of restance won't mean didly sqat. But i wouldnt buy it either, lol powerstream better amps and like $2 more. I love my powerstream

yea but now you mulitply that resistance time 2 or 3. It may not be that much when its just one connection between the power and the HDD but add them up and i bet its noticable.

Edit - Actually i use SATA connectors just so ya know, lol.

Mabye on something that eats amps like a couple 68's But its really not cause for concern dude measure with a multi meter you have to go thro Alot of molexes b4 it starts to degrade.

Also how do I do invisible edits? I see ppl do them all the time and yet i am not aware of how i can. Or are they just saying edit and not accauly editing. Sorry for the double post

well i have a modstream 450w and it is rock solid without a doubt. it has a 20 OR 24 pin atx connector, which is badass, and ocz is quality, so its all good. plus it looks good too. good luck!!

If you edit fast enough the forum software doesn't pick up the edit. That is why people write EDIT: "something"

Edit - Not really!

Basically, I'm only gonna have some older 7200rpm WD 40 gig, floppy, cdrom, vidcard(molex) and mobo connected. Not that much. I'm gonna leave my dvd-rom disconnected. Never use it. I like the idea of the modules, I really dont have that much stuff to connect. Oh, and I got 2 extra fans that have female to male connecters on each. I doubt they take much power. Kinda like this connector, minus the small connector.

dont you mount your fans on the headers on the mobo? I think its safer that way becuase my system shuts down if one of them craps out.

my fans dont have the small connector for the mobo, just the female/male molex.

ahh, that stinks, for me thats a requirement when i buy fans.

well, these used to be my brothers fans i found in a old box. They were free, and do the job. Got one mounted on side case, other under psu as exhaust. I wonder if it's bad having a fan connected in the middle of 2 devices, i wouldn't think so. connected meaning, using the female molex, then say the male to another device.

You could always do a little modding. Swap the connectors, i use molex's my self cause ive had mobo fan headers blow out from amperage hungry fans

I would like to have the smaller connecters for the mobo, cause the only fan on the mobo is the cpu. So im sure there are like 2 extra connections available, I'll let you guys knoww when I get the psu. I just got the tracking number tonight, it said it was shipped out of New Jersey? Newegg is in L.A. And OCZ is in california also.

how do you control them then? or do you run full blast all the time?

You should never power fans off of mobo headers, they are stealing amperage from an already starved CPU.

I had 12a on my 12v line, that wasn't fun. 250x15 would randomly freeze. Now I can do 252x15 stable with my PCP&C.

I don't think a high quality PSU is required, but a low quality PSU can definately be bad, even a hazard. A simple Fortron is nice. You can invest the extra $100 in something else.

Just my thoughts. :)

Having the modular connections makes wire management much easier. If you start pushing more volts through your cpu, ram, video, etc... You will want to have a quality psu. Before my fortron, I would see voltage fluctuation under load, leading to a less stable oc.
