View Full Version : How cool is too cool for a GPU?

OK. So my searches have taken me nowhere with this question.
Were does the advantage of having sub-zero temps. end and the bragging rights begin?
What would be a good temp to run a GPU on a 24/7 system?-50,-40,-30?
I wouldn't want to go through the trouble of getting my future X800XTPE to look like this and not be able to use it 24/7:

it is never too cool lol. You will probably always gain more overclocking potential the colder you can get it.
I have always been told that you can't sub-zero cool a video card and run it 24/7 but then again I could have been told wrong. :)

I've heard this before as well but it's not going to stop me from trying.

Was there any reason for this, a videocard is no different than a normal processor, it should be fine. Only reason I can think they might have said that is because a videocard is harder to condensation proof than a cpu.
yea that is the reason I have always been given. I have always been told and have always read that it is not possible to condensation proof a video card enough for 24/7 use.

LOL. I expected this kind of answer from an xtreme member:)

:( Not good

Dohh!!

Well I think the top orb scores are done sub -90C. The only thing that would prevent this running 24/7, subject to the cascade being capable, is the insulation.
Insulate well enough and the only limit is the cascade you are using to chill.

John.
i runned my 9600Xt @ -20 24/7 2 years ago with a pelt.
No problems with condensation, just put enough grease on it :p:

Do you plan on benching and or gaming 24/7 ? If not , your wasting your money.
IMHO you only need to run sub-0 to bench or game.
Fact is - you need two rigs... :shock2: :shock2: :shock2:
glad wrap the card rumnc styles.
should help with preventing condensation

Thanks for the replies guys!
I'm sure other people will benefit from you thoughts on this (I can think of at least 4 right now).
24/7 PS on the GPU is very possible with good insulation.
As for me, like I had said before on another thread, this will be an investment for me. So, I'll be buying two PS units. I like to bench and love gaming so that setup will hopefully give me many years of fun :)
P.S.:

I had read on another forum that glad wrap should not be used because it has static properties. If runmc has used it before with success the he has just proven this wrong, but is there a special way of using it so that it doesn't damage the card? Like putting Conformal Coating spray first or something?

yes i guess static might form just gonna have to see.
when i was running air-conditioned chiller gpu and maze4-1 for the gpu i used conformal coating all over card. then layers of foam. worked fine on the GF 4200 24/7 got a nice oc on it too. only problem was i played with it too much
heheh as i do
and hose was leaking. blurry screen. pulled it apart to find a puddle in the case and a dead gpu/ mobo.
my first over clock death.
have been too scard to use water since, phase change safer.
one thing also its alot easier to insulate a DIY gpu evap than a water block.
i think glad wrap is needed for cascades.

I had never heard of the static problem myself. Could you link us to the post?
Just to name a few guys who bench with plastic wrap that I know of -
Fugger
Oppainter
macci
Tom Holck
pc ice
runmc
I leave one end of the card open to air ,in this case, for air circulation to cool some hot spots. This was recommended to me by Opp and macci.
There are other ways to prevent condensation. I'm not a believer in 24/7 phasechange on a gpu - not yet anyway.
Like I said - I recommend phase change for gaming and benching at 4-5 hour intervals.
im gonna try glade rap on mine this week.
1Hp single while await dual evap cascade
about -55c idle single stage ya recken its possible. :stick:

OK, I found the post were I read about the static thing. It wasn't easy. I've been reading so much lately, I almost never have less than 10-12 tabs open at the same time. Anyways...Here (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?p=773392#post773392)
I now realize that it was an assumption the guy made, since there are so many people that use this type of insulation without problems (static at least), but you can never be to careful right.
Anyways, I'll probably use a more thorough insulation since I'm new at this and I'll feel better going a bit overboard with the insulation.
