ok fellas im lookin at a 540E ES 3.2
1)
already right off the bat what few reviews ive seen are showing pretty poor scores. and i have a feeling my whimpy clawhammer running 2.5ghz would probably eat it up
right or wrong.
2)
whats this overclocking lock and with the DFI 875P-T overcome this ?
3)
the 875p-T i understand is money well spend, but what should i watch out for ?
over all being an ES chip ill just drop the multi and crank the hell out of the FSB, but if the chip has some ondie overclocking lock,,,, ugh
pro's ?
con's ?
stay with the clawhammer and just get the 875p=T until i can get a 560 or 570 or 6xx chip ?
swiftness is response time is key so many many thanks in advance gent's

I have a 540 DO and 875p-t.The max fsb with 14x or 15x is 277 stable for most of the posts Ive seen.
If you are looking for some numbers I posted some tests here with the 875p-t.

dfi- street is also exellent for info on the 875p-t.

i appreciate the reply
here is a picture of the 540 im looking into.
http://home.comcast.net/~kjboughton/HardForum/P4ES_Confidential.jpg
the 570J is an E0 and pulls 4.25ghz on air with crappy plain jane DDR2 but it also is an ES chip so again even reaching a limit of 4.25ghz if thats the limit,, which i cannot confirm yet because of the use of mediocre ram. then dropping the multi and cranking the FSB should offset that a bit and allow for some pretty impressive scores and performance.
im still finding absolutely ZERO info about these 540's aside form your post you showed me. which to me looks like for the money the 540 is by far the best bang for the buck since the 660's are way higher priced.
btw your 3dmark scores.... are almost on par with my 3200+ clawhammer running 2.5ghz. my 6800 Ultra 440/1200 pulls 13k on 3dmark 03.... 6100 on 3dmark 05.... 26k on 3dmark 01... and 70k on aquamark.
that in itself pretty much shows some seriosuly neck and neck performance from a chip that is a full ghz less than those chips.
memory bandwidth on the other hand... well single channel memory sucks ass on these clawhammers and the clawhammers memory controller.. well.. i dont really car for it.
If my 3200 clawhammer can do this i think i might almost stay with amd and just go get a 3500+ and a NEO2 Platinum and overclock the hell out of that lol.
just undecided... :\

Lestat I can,t tell you the numbers on that 540 DO as I sanded it to get better a overclock, the top was very concave but all the 540 tests were in single channel mode by accident so they are very comparable.
With the 640 running at 4.24Ghz and the x8oo at 600/590 my 3Dmark05 score is 6640.
You might want a 6xx cpu for that board unless the 540 is cheap, but I could not get the 540 to do 4Ghz on air. I think I might get the 640 stable at 4.32Ghz on air with better air flow and secret heat sink.
Also I could not get the 560j to 4.25G.

There is no OC lock on 875P-T

There is no OC lock on 875P-T
i wasnt refering to the board
as i said, or maybe i wasnt clear enough. I have seen people say certain chips themselves have OC lock's into them so that they only overclock a certain amount. Or have i grossly misread those posts and it is the motherboard and certain aspects of the bios that has hindered the overclocking. ?

Yes there is no overclock lock on the 865pe and 875 motherboards but I think the some of the new 915 and 925 northbridge motherboards have locks. The only thing on the cpus is no multiplyer in the 5xxs under the 550 DO.

THe A64 is probably better.
But the new 6 series is tempting, the only reason I got this 530 was because it was $150 and did 4ghz+ without breaking a sweat :)

i went ahead and got the 540 ES so even if it only does 4ghz i can drop the multi and exploit the ram
this brand new OCZ PC3200 EL Plat TCCD better do alot better in the DFI 875P-T than it did in the DFI Lanprty UT 250GB cuz with 2 sticks i could NOT go over 250mhz no matter what i did.
but 1 stick would do around 280 1:1
using a divider of 5:6 - DDR166 i was able to put both sticks up to 312mhz 2.7v 2.5-3-3-10 but wtf good does that do,, its dumb,, i love to see people running dividers, your memory performance just went down the toilet and all you got is a fast cpu and slow ram behind it.

Glad it worked out. The ES chips have a charm to them, dont they :) Just seeing "INTEL CONFIDENTIAL" makes you feel special, and in the very least, makes for an impressive signature :D
