I always see people use p4 1.6ghz and such that get it up to like 3 ghz and i have always wanted to try an intel rig so i thought i would go and buy one soon. I just have some questions about what to get.

What chip do i want? I want to keep prices nice and low but still have one of those 1.6 or so chips that oc's nice and high (cause this is just to try it and thats all, if it dies i dont want to have to care)

What mobo? Same as above, guess i could get this used

Anything else you can think of. I really appreciate the help as im sure most you hate threads like this (i know i should look it up myself but its hard to decided)

if you want a fast but "nice and low" prices, intel isnt for you, unless you can find one of those 2.4s that oc like mad, but ya, i think those are all gone now

those 1.8a processors are dirt cheap pretty much

Those are too old tech to really represent the actual Intel....

personnaly when I buy I dont buy lowest end and always upgrade as soon as price drop since that will never stop....

Normally I like recommending 600 series.... But sicne you were looking into 1.8 I doubt this is in your budget...

Go for one of the low end Prescotts. If you go on ebay you can pick up a ~2.6ghz prescott that will be able to do closer to 4ghz than 3. Newegg has some for about 70.

Just make sure to get a good stepping. It'll be something like SL6WU(that's mine), run it through google, and click on the one that says processor spec finder. Look and see if it's an E0 or not, those are the best now.

Strokey, those might be the low voltage Xeons you are seeing or maybe the P4-Ms - I wouldn't know on the second.

Dual LV Xeons would make a mad encoding machine and they do support 64-bit... 4 threads of goodness.
