View Full Version : Mushkin BLUE UTT looking good!

SO I picked up some Mushkin BLUE and ran it in my rig for my benching session tonight and pullef off the third leg of the 3D Trifecta for the X800XL!!!
At 2700 mHz I was running 183 divider which equaled 270mHz on the Mushkin, and worked well... ran clean and strong at 2-2-2 at 3.6v.
I cranked the CPU up to about 2770, but couldn't get the memory runing at 275, I'll have to try an extended burn-in...
SO I backed down to the 166 divider for my #1 3D Mark 2001 run...
This is great ram, especially considering the $62 price and the BP pcb....

Here's my 3D o/s with default card clocks, 9 x 300, 183 divider, 270mHz DDR540, 2-2-2-7-11-16 @ 3.6V.... For some reason at 3.7v I get BSOD :(

I'm pretty much stuck between these sticks and the Twinmos UTT. Would anyone care to comment on which of the two would be better? Or do both sticks possess about the same headroom? For reference, I'm just looking for about 260 HTT 1:1.

03-21-2005, 07:33 PM
The main diff between the two is that Twinmos sp WILL be utt whereas there is no guarantee that the blue line mushkin will be cos it might be one of the older sticks
So I'd go with Twinmos, but one thing going for the Blue Line is that Twinmos sp 512mb kit is single channel whereas blue line cas 2 stuff 512mb kit is Dual channel (2x256mb). So its up to you, I'd ask charlie where he got it :D

I'm more concerned with a 1GB kit. My assumption was that all of the Speed Preimium could run dual channel in a DFI NF4. Also, shouldn't my chances of recieving UTT be good if I were to order the Mushkin Blue directly from Mushkin?
deception``
these are 180$ for the 2x512MB?
well i just bought 4x512MB of that twinmos stuff at newegg that a few guys here have done. of the 8 or so reviews, all are hitting 250+ HTT with 2-2-2 timings. that stuff was 100$ per gig. so i couldn't pass it up. and whatever 2 sticks do better are mine, the others are for friends.

I guess so, though the best way to get the highest benchie is to go VX if you're going 2x512MB. If not, then...again, ask charlie lol or wait a tad while for ppl to tell you which is better : Mushkin Blue Line UTT or Twinmos UTT.

So I'll make this simple why you should, if you wanted to, go VX:

i dont know if this goes for other stores, but the one in fountain valley charges $80 per 512mb stick. the internet price is $62. i tried talking to a manager to see if i could get them for the internet price but had no such luck. unfortunately they consider outpost.com a separate comapany and will not match the price. really lame if you ask me. im mean the website has the fry's logo on it.

did you memtest your sticks at all, or are you just bench stable at 270??
im going to test the sticks individually and see what results i come up with.

no haven't memtested them.... well actually I do, as a burn-in, but if it'll bench at 270 I don't really care if it errors memtest??
Now if you're at 250-255 memtest clean, that's good! Burn them in and try to open them up to 260 later in the week!! But even if they were maxed today, that's not bad...

If it even hits 230 2-2-2 with some decent voltage (3.5-3.7 is okay on my book) I guess I should be happy waiting for venice for 2GB. Thought about grabbing another pair of BH-5 but my ram costs are going out of roof at this rate so might as well see the actual benefit with 2GB instead of premium 1GB pieces I have all over the place now :)
If it is half decent, guess the BH-5 will be on sale (1GB pair that does 270 @ 3.6-3.7v stable everything :P)
Getting to stage of my gaming life where 1GB just doesnt' cut it anymore... that is scarey...

ive got 3 sticks total now.
#1 = 272 @ 3.6v
#2 = 252 @ 3.4v
#3 = 250 @ 3.4v
any volts over 3.5 on stick #2 and #3 will result in bsod. however #1 loves the juice. it will run with up to 4v no problem :D
now to find a brother for stick #1

Here is quick report on 4 sticks I got.
Bottom line: all of them does 2-2-2-5 240mhz fine. (SPD seems 2-2-2-6 on DFI-NF4 while auto yields 2-3-2-5) @ 3.2v
Stick 1:
241 2-2-2-5 3.2v
244 2-2-2-5 3.3v
Higher volt doesn't yeild any benefit.
Stick 2:
243 2-2-2-5 3.2v
245 2-2-2-5 3.3v
Higher volt doesn't yeild any benefit.
Stick 3:
255 2-2-2-5 3.2v
256 2-2-2-5 3.3v
259 2-2-2-5 3.4v
Higher volt doesn't yeild any benefit.
Stick 4:
253 2-2-2-5 3.2v
255 2-2-2-5 3.3v
Higher volt doesn't yeild any benefit.
Interestingly enough, unlike BH-5 or most VX I had played it, the memory is shy of higher voltage. 3.7v on stick 2 actually made sure that it won't even post. Putting each stick on dual channle results in about 1-2mhz speed reduction from lowest speed memory on stability test.
Now, here is the kicker for me. I am using winchester with 4x512mb 1T 230mhz 2-2-2-5 right now with this memory @ 3.2v. Once I use it for some time, I might slowly increase speed or take off the HS and see what potential it holds (or when venice comes). I wasn't sure if 1T is even possible with 2GB but I guess it is to lesser degree. Running prime 95 with heavy memory test and it only uses 1.2gb :) Time to hit up WoW and see how much smoother it is without HDD thrasing now.
PS) All in all, I can highly recommend this memory based on 4 sticks I got. This is in par of what OCZ VX PC-3200 was semi promised at. (min 240 2-2-2-5 with 3.2v posted by one of OCZ employee while back or their testing method for screening) You probably won't get 260-270 2-2-2-5 like VX series would but it seems to get you 240 2-2-2-5 with no problem which is more than what this memory is worth :) Warning: brick and mortar Fry's has it for $80 a pop while outpost has it for significantly cheaper Seriously pondering about grabbing another gig of this stuff for my 3rd desktop :P

1 Gig works well if you don't have anything on background running :P In IF, 1gig still would stutter occasionally but not that bad. You can just look at how frequently hdd is getting accessed to see where the problem lies. I figured since I am spending so much $$$ and going after that last few percent all the time, thinking saving on memory for once and reducing highly visible lowest common denominator would be good idea and it seems to be paying off (will find out more around afternoon today... on the lagforge :P)
And I prefer leaving few applications on while playing games for whatever quick things that crosses my mind at time.
Interestingly enough, unlike BH-5 or most VX I had played it, the memory is shy of higher voltage.
May be more of a heat issue than voltage issue... from my experience Mushkin's spreader method tends to trap heat more than not with the tape they use.

Same MB, same timings on the DIMMs that could but now don't? Do you have a DFI nF4 (ask because Skip and someone else experienced slow-death-syndrome where their max clocks slowly went down until ultimately croaking) Unlikely, but... have another MB or friend with one you can verify the DIMMs haven't diminished? And if you use Auto timings anywhere - don't, they can get funky sometimes when swapping around different memory.

i really think its the board (dfi nf3 754) It has already killed 3 gigs of ram just by turning it off, i think I need to pick me up another one. It killed my good gig of ch-5, my good gig of twinmos utt so im not gonna risk too much with this ram, im sure its better than the board will let it be. I stuck my gskill in it last night and now it will only work in this board and not my msi while it was doing 300 @ 2.5,3,3,7 like it was nothin in my msi.

Well after a week of toying around....
I have 2 x 512mB Mushkin BLUE UTT running clean north of 270.... at 3.6v. If I could get the sticks cooler I could possibly use 3.7v and hit 275+
Bandwidth wise, though... I get my best numbers at 310, asynch, 183 divider, around 8000mb/s with 9x divider, not bad...
But here it is:

Or am I missing something?.... I guess it would depend on what the multi was right? or is it just Sis software?

Well, Fry's is my first choice on testing something out that hasn't been proven. Only bad thing is... don't be surprised to get retail CPU with opened box or OEM CPU with abused marks... Open box item there on items there usually means 1) not a good overclocker, 2) teething compatibility problem, 3) abused but might be good. Always ask for non open box item they have in stock for things that looks suspicious.

E-mailed Mushkin about UTT, this is what they said:
Hello ---name---,
We are supplying Outpost.com and some Fry's electronics with Blue modules bearing WinBond UTT chips based on the CH5 and BH5 dies. They are not binned for operation beyond the rated specifications but as you can see from the forums the majority are operational at the speed you quoted. Again, they are available only through Outpost.com and some Fry's Electronics.

Subject: DDR CL2 Blue Line has Winbond chip's?
Hello,
I have heard on some forum's (eXtreme systems
<http://xtremesystems.org/forums>, GoT <http://gathering.tweakers.net>)
that Mushkin is using (new) Winbond chips(CH5(/UTT) or BH-5) on there
DDR CL2 Bleu Line memory. Is that correct? And if so, how can I be sure
to order a Winbond set from your site?
And are the chip's tested for a speed(example 230Mhz 2-2-2-5 @ 3Volt)
for being placed on the memory, or all (good and bad overclockers) been
placed on the memory?
I'll hope you can answer my question's and maybe you can send me some
more information about the new Winbond chip's on your Memory.
My regards,
---name---Waited almost a week for this information... :( , but we now know something hey. :)
Good news if you aks me :toast:

Bit more tweaking and playing (as well as burning in) now my 2gb 4x512mb set is stable 243mhz 2-2-2-6 3.3v :) Will increase voltage and fine tune more.
Edit) Now testing 250mhz 2-2-2-6 3.5v. Memtest86 ran fine and testing windows memtest to confirm. Strange how I thought winchester can't handle 4 dimm... 1T well... but it is doing fine it seems... If venice shows more promise than winchester on 4x512mb... i might have to take out heatspreader... :P I did change drive str to 8 and it does seem to help taking more voltage on memory in... Sweet spot for me would be 260 2-2-2-5 or 2-2-2-6 but I will wait for venice to really push the memory :P Quite happy as is now.

I'm really sorry for being the slow one here, but what 2 dots is he talking about? Dots on the pcb? I've read this whole thread and I dont see anything about a 2 dot. Some please clarify, as someone else is probably thinking the same thing. Ahhh i'm getting them tommorro, please tell, what am I going to get or how do I tell?

this is sold as blue value stuff...so i highly doubt mushkin will cover it beyond the normal 2.6-2.8 volts for their normal ram
mushkin has lifetime if you stay within specs ;D

yes...dots...physical indentations on the chips.
but it shouldnt matter to you, since most of them have heatspreaders on them...removal = death of warranty
as for being able to tell...look for the brainpower pcb...written on the side corner somewhere "BPXXXX"
aside from that...theres only one other way to find out....

Anyone ordered from outpost to europe? They ship internationally but don't state the cost for shipment.
I did
it's 20§ Airbone express (my choice) or 40$ DHL (if I remember, may depend on where you are, I'm in Germany)
update:
WHAT THE :banana::banana::banana::banana:
The guy from DHL just came in the second I typed this
That's 2 1/2 days of shipping from USA to Europe :slobber:
And I had to pay ~55$ duty :slap:

You can still order them from outpost.com if you are in europe but shipping will be about 20$

You talking about these? http://shop4.outpost.com/product/3602905?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
Do mushkin speed bin any UTT/BH-5? Or do they just throw all their BH-5/UTT into the blue line at outpost? The answer in the email seems kind of uncertain... They could be just throwing a bunch of ddr200 granted chips without knowing if they do ddr250 at the same voltage. Or are they picking out the best ones and putting them elsewhere? Take twinmos for an example they only seem to have one kind of BH-5 modules, that means that massivly overperfoming chips could en up on the only BH-5 modules they have and perform much better than that... same with mushkin blue line?
How many of you guys have had problems with increased voltage doesn't help? How many kep having the problem after removing the heatspreader?
nope they dont speed bin them...what else you want for 60$ ?

Just ordered 4 of the 512mb sticks... been out of the loop for a few, is UTT = to new BH5, just means Untested but essentially the same chips? Are my chances essentially 100% to get this stuff on all 4 sticks? Or should I call Outpost and tell them I want to switch to two dual packs of the good Blue stuff if I want good performance? I currently am running two sticks (dual pack) of Mushkin 2-2-2 BH6 Special Black and am looking for similar-performing RAM in a greater quantity.

There is a shop in Sweden selling the BH-5 twinmos... well I dont know how hardassed "Komplett" (the shop in sweden) is about returns, but mushkin is USA only... Don't know how they are with international returns... the shipping from Sweden to us could also be much more expensive:/.

Tiger, UTT is not BH-5, UTT is actually the new CH-5. The BH-5 used in the Mushkin Blue is actual BH-5 ICs, not UTT. They are not Speed Binned or tested so you are taking a chance, but so far performance has been good with them. I should be getting my 4 sticks tomorrow or Friday, then I'll be stressing them all weekend and finding the best 2.

They dont suck, please dont post such things and get others confused, you can look through this thread and you will see that Dumo got some black ones and he is doing great with them, pushing past 250 around 247 mempass'ed. Go to outpost.com website and read the return policy, it reads that you can return your products (even if open) within 30 days, however you are responsible for shipping and everything has to be with its original packaging, even if the package is open. Allright mates, I don't want to annoy you but need some help with my mushinks.
Here is my current status:
Got 4 Mushkins, 3 can be used (s.a. why)
My motherboard is a Abit KV8 pro (S754), i'm running a very old modded Bios version because it is my only chance to give high voltage (up to 3.32V) at the moment.
One stick (the first i tried) seems to be very bad to me, i didn't want to run the default specs nor 2-2-2-5 at 3.3V, that's why for the moment i would like to concentrate on the other two sticks
Both of em pass memtest (and test5 loops) at 220Mhz 2-2-2-5 3.3V
Both of em show some errors at 225Mhz (one seems to be a bit better, sometimes passes without any error, but most likely will produce 1-2 errors a loop, the other one gives me 2 or more errors /loop)
My settings are the ones Dumo used (link (http://xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=27004)) They helped me getting less error at 230Mhz with the "good" stick but they decreased the "good" stick's performance at 225Mhz (had it up to 10 loops memtest5 errorfree + one whole memtest loop)
My general Question would be what you guys think is holding me back?
Did I just get 3 Crappy sticks?
Is it my MoBo / old Bios?
Any of my bios settings?
I would like to hope that everything might become good but after 6 hours it's quite hard :(

Took me a bit of reading to catch it too... thankfully, I did indeed order the right dual packs :).

Now please stop confusing others.
sorry, i kinda panicked. edited that post

yeah I think it's easy to get greedy and consider 220 to be crappy, but keep in mind your paying near generic prices and they are still going up and over what they are rated for and often quite a bit higher at much tighter timings.
I guess I was lucky when I got mine and thought, well I can use them in another system if they don't fly high, but now they are my best benching ram now, running 253 memtest passable and much higher in benching 3d ;)
