it's not a futuremark issue.
it's a ATI issue.
I took the latest ATI driver, checked out the INF files and theres no X800XL in there. it's under the "X800 series", so for FM to change the XL into it's own catagory, ATI would have to start making a part of the driver specifically for the XL, not just mushing it under the X800 series name.

What does nu stand for? I'm unclear what a 6800nu is.
I'm still trying to figure out what nVidia has for under $300 in PCIe. Looks like they have a 6600 128mb and a 6200 64mb. I'll pass on those. :(

Well I slapped on the ATI Silencer4, it doesn't line up PERFECTLY with the XL, but it's pretty good. Now I can run 465/600 3D, and I noticed the heat of the air coming out of the Silencer, it's NOWHERE near as hot as the x800xtpe makes.... which leads me to believe that it needs more V.... True.... and it's actually a much better deal :D
All the 6800 PCI-E cards are selling at a premium because of SLI. The cheapest 6800NU I can find is $299-$329, and you can get the XL off shopATI now for $299 - 10%.........
I'm not sure if it's a better "deal" than the 6600gt, though... now that's a TON of bang for the buck! $175 each for XFX and SLI capable in my DFI SLI.

To my knowledge, the Zalman hasnt served its purpose as a modded cpu heatsink type cooler and the seperate ram sinks will be harder to remove then the AC5, especially when you're putting some extreme cooling on the XL.
The AC5 is a better choice.

yup...
@ 1.5v I think the XL would do 500... on air, maybe 525ish.
This ISN'T the "bad OC'er people have made it out to be.
The 2.0nS ram, they should be good for 625 on a cool pcb, maybe 650 if they respond to the Vmods...
The core... well 400>460 is a 15% OC on AIR. My x800xtPE went 520>600 on air, OR voila! a 15% OC.............
Like you said, with good cooling, 600+ and even 700+ should be possible.

relax a certain timing on the ram and you might gain like 50MHz. x800xl may be .11u but without low k they start at lower clocks. percent wise they may overclock as well as x800xt but what people seem to care is final clocks. 15% overclock for each and of course the x800xt has higher final clocks. My friend has an x800pro that gets 13.5k in 3dmark 2003 overclocked and he says its faster vs. x800xl once overclocked

VIVO (?), Dual DVI, Molex and 1.6ns mem.
It aint getting any mods or extra cooling tho, cant afford it to break atm. :D
Serious cooling & volts on a XT next month methinks. :)
DOES ANYONE ELSE SEE WHAT I SEE????

could you take some more closeup shots of different angles of around that PCI-E 6-pin molex area? Also the same area on the bottom of the card...this will point out if there are any missing components (other than the molex) that the other x800xl's have/don't have.
I have my x800xl sitting on a shelf...taunting me...until my A64, DFI Ulrta-D, and other parts come in. If there's no other or not many missing components for that power connector...I'll do that mod in a heartbeat!

use a multimeter and check to see if both sides of that SMD capacitor are touching the heatsink too.

considering that the x800xt uses only a little more power then the x800xl i would think that extra power connector will make all the difference in the world overclocking that card

You can buy a seperate snap-on 6-pin connector for some X800XLs for 15 bucks ;) The MSI one is supposed to have one (msi website shows it) but retailers skimped out on it except xpc gear sells them seperately for 15 bucks :D

My first post here. Hi everyone ...
According to that X800 XL is drawing more power than X800XT PE ????? X800 XL is using finer manufacturing process and has slower clocks. How can that be correct???? Furthermore X800XT PE is drawing less power X800 XT? Am my missing something or is this chart flawed?

Ty isp, thats exactly what I was talking about :) Though I was under the impression you could use that with a modded power connector. I still think you need an XL with a premade connector to use that right away. Though shouldnt those XLs (like powercolor) that come with power connectors have that power lead ???
X800 XL is drawing more power than X800XT PE ?????
I imagine its the 110nm architecture along with the assumption that the XL will not be sold with power connector hence drawing higher watts from th PCIe slot, afaik
Furthermore X800XT PE is drawing less power X800 XT?
That might be a PCIe X800XT, the article didnt say - it was an X800XL review. But for sure if theres only one thing thats right up there, its the X800XL power reqs in light blue and light green ;)

BBA X800XL have 2.0nS Sammy chips...
But before you sneeze... they're good for well over 600mHz w/default volts!
Now, where can one buy the 6 pin MOLEX that solders to the PCB??

But 110nm architecture reduces power consumption not the other way around. Hmm so you are saying these are not total power consumption fugures, but only the power drawn through the PCI-E slot? That would make this chart pretty worthless.

i bet you could cut off 6 pins off a atx connector and super glue it to the video card pcb and then solder it to the points on the pcb.. hehe that sounds like a fun project. my 6600gt has a perfect spot for a 12 volt connector to attach but ive never seen a 6600gt with it so im not sure its safe?? hehe im so tempted to try as my 6600gt does 600/1200 with stock cooler and stock volts so with some voltmod and powerconnector i could see big oc.....

Unfortunatly I havent been able to use my PowerColor XL yet (Only my mobo needs to be delivered, it should be here tomorrow). It's got 2ns Samsung. I think the 1.6's are from when ATi still hadnt got the specs entirely final for the card. As you guys probably know, they changed the RAM clock from 1.6ns 500MHz, to 2ns 490MHz (strange that they used 1.6 in the first place). So I think only the older cards, and some manufactorers that choose not to follow ATi's recomended specs, have the 1.6ns Samsung chips. But as already prooven, the 2ns isnt exactly bad ;)
I still find it strange that they would only give the core 1.35V... But hey! that just prooves that it's not a bad OC'er as most reviews have said, it just needs a bit more juice.
But I'v got a few pics, taken with a LG "3" cellphone.. Nothing special, but if you guys want to see it I could post them.
And great scores all of you! I just hope my setup will get me over 30K... But I doubt it.

Effectively it is a low score. If you see some posts above I take 11800 @ 440/550 with CPU @ 2475 mhz ... considering 3DMark 03 is't much depending on CPU with your gpu/mem clock you should take 12K at least

So far I have a few theories :
1st , My hdd has gone through several nf3 and video card driver installations and I haven't formated in about 6 months....I'll try cleaning up as much as possible and reinstalling other Cats (currentyl 5.2)
2nd VERY Unlikely but , I might be past the point where I'm doing negative overclocking . I tried lowering the clocks , but my score lowered. I ran the bench at stock clocks before and after water and got about the same results ( 10500's )
I'm pretty sure this is software related. I checked my GPU temps and it never got above 34c , so i guess heat isn't a factor. I'm pretty pissed because i think my card is clocking decently ...almost 600 mem and i believe it can go to around 465 on the core , no vmods.
If anyone has anything to suggest ...feel free :stick:
And that reminds me I need to update my sig

I have been following this thread, hoping that some of the guys that have succesfully voltmodded their X800XL would make some sort of guide. Take some pictures of how how they did it.
I have seen this page http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/overclocking/voltmods/112
but drawing with a 2B pencil to make a bridge on the VGPU and drawing directly on the resistor of the IGPU havent raised the voltage. I measured the voltage at the point they have shown, and it has been 1,408-1,41 before and after I tried to draw.
Am I doing the correct thing? Any help would be good.

Uhm very interesting... but I have one doubt: I know that the limits of X800XL in oc are low voltage and production process @ 0.11 infact it's hard to reach 450/550 with dissy stock and default voltage. And these are hardware limits not software/bios limitations... true?

Why would 0.11 production process limit voltage? On the contrary, it should make it easier to overclock, and in fact explains the need for less voltage.

I have been misunderstood: two things aren't linked, but both limit overclock. It's a fact that without vmodd (and/or without a very good dissipation system because, in my opinion, 0.11 process = more heat but I could have said a wrong thing, I'm not an expert) it's impossible to reach 460+ of core clock with a X800XL.
A X800XT card can be overclocked (relatively) "more heavly" with dissy stock and without a vmodd...

got some benches done on my newly built a64 system with 3200 winnie and x800xl. got just under 20000 everything stock using crappy generic ddr400 in single channel mode. then overclocked cpu to 230htt 2300mhz ram 1:1 just to see what it would do (still trying to work out this dfi ultra d) and used ati tool to set max clocks on x800xl which settled at 460 core and 560 memory , and got around 24400 , and thats with loose timings on my bh5 as im still fiddling with all the settings.

I'm actually kinda pissed at my x800xl. I came from a 9600xt that scored over 5500 on 3dmark03, while my x800xl scores twice that....I suppose I was expecting a higher score since it has 16pipes, twice the memory, and about 3 times the bandwidth.
but anyway...I did the voltmods on my card...didn't gain me much. I think the cooling is holding me back. What cooler should I get for this thing? The stock job gets very warm/hot when benching or using atitool. I suppose I'd also need ramsinks...which won't be a big deal...but do any of the aftermarket coolers contact the ram also or even leave space for ramsinks?
one last question...what are safe ranges for voltages? right now I have 1.45v to the core and 2.3vdd and 2.1vddq. Those voltages give me about 455/570. I want MORE! :slobber:

2003 run new 3d 01 here (http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=8478153) cant get much more on the card tried 460 560 and itjust drops out , so im guessing not enough power as its not even tearing or artifacting at 450 550 just runs smooth in 01 and 03 and couple of hours of ut2004 smooth aswell , gonna order some vr's
I also got this card, and to be specific, the Powercolor version with 1.6ns ram and the power connector.
But no matter what I try, I cannot get the memory beyond 580.
Really strange, cus the RAM is rated 1.6ns, which is 1000/1.6=625, right?
I can push the core to about 469 with minor artifacts, zalman VF700-Cu cooled (also the ramsinks on the mem).

As for your 31k score, it's nice. You've got good CPU power going there with the tight timings and the Win2K/8.1. The Win2k/8.1 by themselves are worth 800pts...
My Drago Low and Nature are 100% from the card clocks...

nox try bumping the core to 450 and mem at 580 , and maybe lower your ram cas latency to 2.5 or 2 if itll go. my connect 3d was the cheapest x800xl avaidable at £200 and it does 450 580 with ease , core wont go higher down to lack of power it looks like. open task manager and see if theres anything running using a lot of resources , and shut everything off in your toolbar like firewall and anti virus or spyware software if ur using any. 11962 isnt that bad its only about 300 off what me and charlie are getting and were both running our processors at 2700 with 300htt , ur just doing 2500 with 250htt . try lowering your multi to 9 and your htt multi to 3 then see if you can reach 300 htt you should at least break 12 with that

Got my Asus x800xl VIVO today. No power connector .. Komplett.no got the pictures mixed up.
It OC´s OK, but its definitely not the best overclocker.
3dmark03 max - 470/540 (with some minor memory artifacting)
I slapped on a Zalman VF700-AlCu. Loadtemp is ~43c
I measured the vgpu, and it seems to be 1.41v. I thought the XL´s were 0.11 running lower voltage than the R420´s?
The RAMs aren´t even hot. About 40c .. must me undervolted or something.
Anyway im gonna vmod it tomorrow. Would be nice to have 500/550 with silent aircooling. One thing is for sure.. im keeping my XT PE. XLs are no good for benching.

I'm gonna' put the XL under DI this weekend. Unfortunately if the GPU is under DI, I have to leave the CPU air-cooled, so about 2760mHz will be the max, but with '03 and '05 it should be enough for 7K and 14K.
I'm HOPING for 600/612......... 492/612 now on AIR with Silencer4
Also may bust out the win2K HDD for some '01 action, but with the DI on the CPU rather than the GPU.

Please forgive my ignorance, but what does each of these things control: VDD, VDDQ, and IGPU? I saw each of these referred to in the pictures at this vmod link (http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/overclocking/voltmods/112) but I'm not sure about some of the terminology.
VDD is RAM voltage, right? If that's true, what's VDDQ? I didn't hear of anyone in this thread modding IGPU, so I'm not even sure if I need to think about modding it when I get one. The only one I know for sure is VGPU. :stick:
I'm sure a few other people might like to know as well. Thank you! :)
NST6563

IGPU = Overcurrent protection. Useful if you want to give more volts to your gpu but the card shuts down to prevent damage.
VGPU is obvious.
I'll let someone else answer the vdd and vddq. I think that they are the votlages for the ram, but not sure. I've often heard/seen vddq = 1/2(vdd)...but on my x800xl, vddq was almost the same as vdd. Unless the vmod on that link was wrong.

Ive got it under my waterblock and my max stable clocks so far are 460/550. Im amazed at the ram clocks Charlie is getting, have you volt modded the ram or is that at default, cos if the ram responds well to voltage then I will have to mod that as well as the core.
Temps according to riva tuner whilst playing hl2 read a max of 42C, 3d05 heats up to abt 40C
Will be looking at maybe flashing the card with x800xt bios (modified hopefully to reduce clocks) to see if i can increase the clocks. Happy so far with the card, just hope to get come more out of it!!

Set it all to high performance, man. No one cares how good your bench looks. :) It'll probably give you a couple hundred points extra.
Disable as many services and processes running in the background, too. Run it in Real-Time priority through task manager and do the multiprocessor tweak through device manager. Doing all that might even get you close to 30k with a little higher GPU/CPU clocks. :toast:

i set them all to high and put windows to performance , and managed to get it 3d stable at 2700 again. is vcore safe @ 1.66 and ldt 1.5 and 1.8 on chipset.. is that to high for 24/7? got 29492 check sig for link. how do you do the multi tweak? any others worth doing to help me make 30k

ctr panel>system>hardware>device manager>computer>acpi uniprocessor pc>driver tab>update driver>bottom bullet>select acpi multiprocessor pc
Now beware: ACPI Multiprocessor tweak sucks for 24/7 usage and it's not reversible without an O?S install... if you want 30K, plan on doing a fresh O/S install!!

I think you're REAL close to your max... fwiw, acpi tweak would probably give 500 points...

did acpi tweak and set to boot up in diagnostic mode and killed explorer.exe.. only got 28840????

try without diagnostic/killing explorer...

In what way does it suck, charlie?
I used MPS Uniprocessor (faster than Multi ACPI FYI ;) ) for 3 months over 2 motherboards without a problem 24/7. (2.72GHz)
Because of the increased temps at idle... on mt DFI it makes my fan kick on high frequently enough to irritate me, and this is my 24/7 rig...plus for gaming I'd rather keep the low temps.
But for every 3D Bench I run, of course I use it :D
I tried MPS Uniprocessor and the others awhile back, and found no benefit.

It IS reversible!
Just go to device manager, computer, and select Roll Back Driver :)
Problem solved.

UMM...the 1.6ns memory is good...most cards come with 2.0ns. The lower the ns the faster the memory.

This is my Sapphire X800XL on winxp 24/7 settings, no special tweaks.
Now running 460/580 artifacts free with a modded OCZ Gladiator heatsink and a low speed fan, vGPU 1.49v pencil mod, no sinks on mem yet.
With stock cooler it only goes to 430 core, I know is a bad one and as I see while adding volts my GPU in particular does not benefit too much from higher voltage, tried even 1.75v and only gained about 10mhz and A LOT of heat.
Just by switching to the Gladiator, core rises from 430 to 450.
In my case vGPU is not worth it.
Sorry my english guys, I know it sux. :p:

Gonna buy a X800XL and have to choose between Powercolor and Sapphire (the difference between then being 30$). Which would you recommend? And could you peeps who have x800xl's specify what brand they are? :)

The Powercolor, it has 2 DVI, VIVO and additional power connector.

i got a connect 3d.. the cheapest brand i could fine. 2ns memory no power connector , does 455 core and 580 memory with no vmods , if i go 2mhz over 455 it just crashes out of 3d mark but still no artifacts so i think it has potential to go quite a bit higher when i get myself a new multi meter (my daughter broke my only one) got trimmers ready to go on

guys don't lead people to believe they all come with 1.6ns cause they don't. I just got my powercolor and it has 2ns. A friend from another part of the world also got one recently and his too has 2ns ram. It is still hit and miss.

Does the 1.6ns RAM overclock that much better? I don't see many people getting above 550-600 with stock mem voltage, no matter the RAM type.

Probably that 1.6ns mems comes undervolted and "perhaps" with volts they do a lot better than 2.0ns, until someone try it this is only theory.
Anyone? :D

Has anyone mounted An ATI Silencer 5 onto their powercolor X800XL? I'm sure it will fit but most XL cards don't have rage theatre chip and power connector so not sure if it's going to get in the way. Is the power connector for the fan the same and if plugged in nothing is going to blow? I thought I read a post where the fan sparked when plugged into a card no longer working.
wow didnt knew that :(

I got a powercolor with 1.6ns.
But the problem is the mem won't go any further than 545mhz or so according to atitool. Tested with normal room temperature (20 c), and a zalman vf700-cu on it.
Did manage to get 577 with little artifacts with room temp of 10 c.
Really don't get why the mem just won't run any higher, it's rated 1.6 so it should run 600 pretty easily right?
Going to try pencil modding it for the second time, already did it once, but the resistance was stil lthe same after about an hour of trying, must be doing something wrong.
yea its 1.6ns :)
and club 3d use 1.6ns :)
Not always.
Some Club 3D have 2.0 ns chips.

noone said you lied :D
But the 05 and 03 are at similar clocks, the 05 is correct, the '03 is too high. Probably just a software bug, nothing else implied.....
