which would be better: taking the heatspreader off of a Intel P4 Prescott @ 3.4GHz and installing the water block
Or leaving the heatspreader on the cpu and installing the water block.
I was thinking that taking it off would be better becuase the block i want to use (pictured below) has the intake right on top of the die.
thanks for your input guys!

Last I heard you can not remove the heat spreader of the prescotts without taking part of the core with it. I saw a few websites do that when the prescotts were first released and dont know if its been changed or not.
Also with the Swiftech blocks which use the stock mounting (for socket 478 atleast) the block will not contact the core of a cpu with the spreader removed.
I have a few Northwoods with the spreader removed and have found no heatsink that used the stock brackets that would contact the cores. Even my Alpha and Thermalright SP94 had to be modified to contact the cores and they are mounted directly through the board.

apparently I think the new cores are epoxied on.. I cant confirm this but I wouldnt chance it for less than 100mhz.
btw u should change the title to..

i dunno, if you can successfully get it off ive heard that with the swifty block delivering the water right on top of where the core is you can gain significant MHz, im not sure if they are epoxied on though, hope not!

the significant gains are rare... thats usually from when the IHS has horrrible contact. If it has decent contact then removing it gains you less than 100mhz for alot of hassle and daily chance to kill the core considering the mounting system of 939.
