today I was watching the news and saw that the Pope john paul the second ... I think thats his name...
he's been sick lately, and had a tracheotomy today.
had a hole poked through his neck so he can breath.
now theres all these people that want him to resign, cause they are afraid he can't talk...

but the last pope that had to resign was over 600 years ago.

man, talk about kicking a man when he's down. :stick:

he's basically half in the grave already, he's sick, and he's spent his whole life in the service of the church and god and all that.
don't make the poor old guy resign, thats just a disgrace.
I mean, hes old, and sick, is that really a suprise?
but is that reason enough to make him resign?
I mean, spend all your life being the figure head of the church for a billion people, and the moment you call in sick, people want you to resign?
give the guy a break, I mean, thats just mean to make him be the first pope in 600+ years to have to resign, when he didn't do anything more, then live alittle longer then people want him too...

man, some people can be so mean.
I bet theres some greedy shady cardinal there in vatican city talking all this crap cause he wants his job.
I am not religious myself, but damn, I can see when people are just trying to kick a man when he's down, and that sucks.

I agree with you 100%,but there are other things to consider.
If he is unable to do his "job" he should retire on his own(could happen).
What is the long term forcast of his health ?
In his position he is a symbol of strength and commitment.Just as if the leader of a country is ill,he should do the same.
This may not be the way it works though.
He is a great man and I wish him the best.

There's not a such thing like "Pope resignation". This is lifetime position. Only death ends papacy... That's the way it was and it should stay like that...

enter the words "pope to resign" in google. then read...
it is a life time position... but they still want the guy to resign.

The last pope to resign voluntarily was St. Celestine V, who stepped down in 1296 after a short reign.

http://www.angelfire.com/ky/dodone/PopeResign.html

and a pope can resign....

Canon 332 of church law stipulates that a papal resignation be made freely and "duly manifested," which is generally understood to mean in writing or in the presence of witnesses. Most experts believe a papal resignation would have to be communicated to the College of Cardinals, which elects popes. But church law makes clear that no one need accept a pope's resignation in order for it to be valid.

A sick pope can delegate much of his authority to trusted aides. But if a pope becomes incapacitated without having previously delegated responsibility, no decisions that require papal authority can be made.

most people who think he should resign probably think so because hes so old and weak that they doubt he can take all the important decisions anymore. i dont believe he makes the important decisions himself anyways even if he would be healthy and fine, so i dont mind... :)

If he is unable to do his "job" he should retire on his own(could happen).

but it won't happen, he said clearly that he won"t resign anyway he's not in control of anything anymore, his close cardinals are the true power now.
The church wants him to resign because his reign has been long (too long for some) it's the longest in the papal history. Expect the next pope to be really old, the church doesn't want another long reign but something short for the transistion and maybe even an italian again

Do any of you know why he doesn't want to resign?

Because he's going to die soon enough, there really isn't a point to it, imho. Like it was said he already has one foot in the grave. This could be his final hour.

nah, some died of "unknown reasons" and were most likely empoisoned and i think one was even murdered.

and the difference is nowadays with the use of modern technology we can extend our lifes so much that people just dont get old and die, almost all old people end up like the pope, fading conscioussness and more and more illnesses until too many organs fail at once...

maybe they should change the law...

I think its only fair to him to let him finish. What they should do is have a lesser pope who works under him for the last few months of his life and then takes over when he cant make decisions anymore. Then there wouldnt be the shame of resigning.

From what I understand he's been one of the better popes throughout Catholic history. Would you tell your grandfather he can't be your grandfather anymore cuz he's to sick to play with his grandchildren. Not likely. I'm not Catholic so it's not the end of the world to me but I think it's pretty mean and rude to even be talking this cr@p about the guy. They made it a lifetime job pretty much for the same reason our Supreme Court justices are lifetime...freedom to do what he believed he needed to do. Grant the man a little dignity in the fading years I say. Good topic though, it seems to overblown in the media.

I'm sorry, i quoted this part for the "he could" not the rest

He doesn't want to resign because he said that being a pope is god gift and it's god who can take it back.
As someone said, don't worry there's some people who already took the power and are running all the church for him

Its a small minority that want him to resign. Unfortunately the minority always shouts loudest, thats all.

Cheers, dEl.

John Paul II is a great man, and I'm not even Catholic. He had the courage to go to his native Poland, and confront the USSR on "their" home turf, so to speak. He along with Ronald Reagan did more than any two men in history to bring down the Soviet Union. That's why he was nearly assasinated. Yuri Andropov, the iron fisted head of the old KGB, was supposedly the mover and shaker behind Mehmet Ali Agca's attempt on the Pope.

His legacy will be the downfallof the USSR. So there is no reason for him to resign. Just because the body is failing does not mean the mind is still sharp, or the spirit. Like the old saying goes, "The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."

One thing is an absolute, there will NEVER be an American Pope.

the man is responsible for millions of people and has to make important decisions (stem cell research etc) wich he cant make since hes too old and ill all the time...

would you want him as president in your country to decide whether or not north korea poses a thread or not and whether armed force should be used to stop them building nuclear weapons?

i dont! ^^

One thing is an absolute, there will NEVER be an American Pope.Maybe a south american one, i think there is one cardinal that has a good chance to become the next pope but i can't remember exactly the country (maybe his name was ricardo)

I should have said "from the USA". Of course I could be wrong about that, too. If the Hispanic population continues to grow as projections indicate, then some day, say 30 years from now, the frist Pope from the USA might be named Sanchez or Flores, or Martinez. That would really frost some people.

I guess there wouldn't be an american (US) pope because you're mostly protestant than catholics
