R290 (propane) will be ok for single stage, a lot of peoples use this gas, so I suggest
you to read there

If you put only CO2, it won't work, but if you mix little amount CO2 with, for example,
R290, maybe it should work, but CO2 mix for single stage isn't fairly tested, only jan
and JSU did it, but, unfortunatelly, jan didn't tested under load, JSU had restrictive
metering device (if I remember correctly).

If you want start with phase change stuff withous pains, just put R290 :) But be
beware - he's a flammable gas

I did test it under load and the CO2 wasnt doing any good for load temps. At 0W the evap was around -60 but with 180w the evap was more in the -19 range. If you would use a suction HX it might be able to hold better loaded temps tough since it could be able to condense the CO2 even under load.
