I have a 9000 and a 6000 btu compressor. Which one should I use for the phase change and which one for a vacuum pump? I don't know if bigger is always better for phase change. I will be using r290 first for testing and then 404a later on when I get the hang of it. What would be the difference between the two? Will it cool better with the bigger compressor?

Use the smaller. 9000 is probably 3/4 or 1 HP, which is really big. Even the 6000 will probably be pretty large. You should probably look at the compressor specs before you decide though.

um are they both hermys or rotarys? as a rule of thumb you should use the smaller compressor for a vacuum pump b/c it produces less heat and can run longer but in this case the question is which compressor do you want to run/be around more than the other.

My system uses a 10K BTU rotary. I can't imagine using a 6K just to vaccum the system, much less a 9K. Maybe you can find a smaller unit that would work better. You may be able to go to a HVAC dealer and pick up a used vaccum pump from them that they don't use anymore.

Use the bigger compressor for your phasechange ;) IMHO

Not sure if either on is rotary type or not. They are both from window A/C units. (Brand new) What would be the diff if it's not rotary? Need to check them and see but I think they are 3/4 Hp.

I am leaning towards the 9000 for the phase change because I am starting with r290. But I may go to r404a which I don't think needs the higher pressure...

Still debating.

Btw. the 9000 compressor says R22... with mineral oil in it. Can that be converted to r290 or 404a??

From what I understand the compressor isn't necessarily made for the refridgerant but the load and type of use.

Am I right?

Put which ever refrigerant in it you wish. Just be sure to put the proper oil for the refrigerant you use.

If they are window a/c compressors then they are probably rotary.
The rotary is round and tall.

R290 is compatible with all oils and R404a is compatible with Polyol Ester oil. There's a page about refrigerant properties and compatibility here if you need any more info: http://www.fuzzymuzzle.com/compwiki/index.php/Refrigerant (Refresh the page if you get an error)

From my research, I thought 404a does ok with mineral oil but works better with poe??

The thing I would worry about with mineral oil is it slogging (getting too cold) and gunking up my system. I don't know how much $$ poe is though.

Minera oli wont be clogging the system. The only problem with using it is that R404 wont carry it. But with few % of R290 In the mix it should work just fine.
