Hey guys, long time lurker, first tiem poster! I just purchased a pair of OCZ VX RAM and have heard a lot about how it needs to burn-in before it can really hit a high FSB. I have been struggling with my terrible Asus A8N and finally bought a DFI Lanparty Ultra-D board. I have a 3200+ that is completely stable at 2.65GHZ, of course on the A8N that is with memory dividers thanks to its inability to go above 240FSB. I would like to run my memory at 265 possibly 2-2-2-8 (higher if necessary) so I could do a 1:1 overclock. Here are my questions:
1. What settings should I enable in the BIOS (Timings, Voltage, etc.) to burn-in the RAM?
2. What is the process for doing a proper burn-in?
3. Do I need active cooling on the memory modules (I have 1 120mm Fan Exhaust, 1 80mm fan Intake, and 1 120mm Fan for XP-120)? If so, what would you guys recommend?
4. Any other info I need to know about overclocking the board? I know I need to update to 2/9 BIOS, set jumper so that memory is being fed off of 5V rail (my PCP&C 510 SLI will love this...haha), but is there anything else?
Thanks for any help!

jdogg,
Start with 3.3 vdimm at 230 and 2,2,2,5 timings and run test 8 in memtest for 24 hours. Test 8 is much tougher than test 5. After that, go up to 235 for another 10 hours. After that, just add voltage and speed and run 5 hours for each setting.
You will need a fan blowing over the dimms as they can get mighty hot when you ramp up the voltage.

Thanks for the reply! Any recommendations on how to cool the RAM with my XP-120 lording over half the RAM slots?

Ghettomount a 80mm in the case so that it points towards the ram. Use zipties or something.

What I did was, start your burn in at 3.3 volts and do either 2-2-2-5 or 2-2-2-10 i would start at 240 as well, sort of wasting time going up from 230 unless of course your sticks cant do 240 right away, which they should definetly be able too since vx is binned upto 240mhz, i always use test 5 though
in the UTT/VX voltage scaling thread theres a link to uwackme's burn in guide
Yeah the more the merrier in terms of ram cooling
And sometimes, I dont know if this only happens to me on the ultra-d boards, but sometimes my ram voltage wont stick, like i'll set it and itll go back to 2.6, to remedy this use your + and - keys on your keypad
Theres lots of good info to be had on both utt and vx threads in the memory bandwidth forum
Try keeping a record of everybodies timings, and then vary them alittle for the best results on your sticks

I'm liking this VX memory. I have it right now at 3.28V on my DFI LanParty board at 250MHZ Prime95 and MemTest stable. I tried 260 but got a ton of errors. I ran test 5 for 200 passes and test 8 for 200 passes for 250 and didn't get a single error at 2-2-2-8. I tried bumping the voltage to 3.4 for 260 and it still gave me thousands or errors. Will more burning in help achieve 260 or should I be happy with 250 and leave it alone?
Thanks!

try playing with the more advanced timings some. I couldn't get my bh5 stable past 245mhz untill I messed with the timings (as they were set to auto before) now I can run them all tight at 265mhz with 3.6v

I tried burning in my VX sticks, after 6hrs of 3.6v @ 265Mhz tightest timings, looping test5: no improvemnt.
I had a fan over the sticks too.

I've had burnin success with BH-5, but my VX don't go higher. In fact, as soon as I installed my DFI nF4 setup, in a couple of hours I went up exactly where I'm now (260 htt memtest stable, 233 htt Prime stable), and since then NOTHING has been able to take me a single htt higher although I've messed around with the additional timings like never in my life and flashed just about every official and beta bios available.

my VX was stuck at 260, but with about 8 hours of memtest I am able to get 265. @70 is still elusive, but haven't gone higher than 3.5vvdr
As for timings jdogg, go tot he "VX best ram ever" thread, and find my post which is like 4th from the last. It shows a bunch of timings. I have not played with them all yet, but I do know the 2/09 bios lowered my VX clocks since it did change some of the timings. Basically though it is a good starting point, then you can start changing some of the auto's and go from there.
