View Full Version : DFI NF4: Successful Installation Thread !!! (RULES IN POST #1)
HARDCORECLOCKER
02-07-2005, 06:10 AM
:D O.K. - we already have here more than a handfull of threads at XS belonging to the DFI NF4 - all filled up with different kinds of problems, bugs, non working hardware etc.
So from day to day it will be more difficult to find a solution for a problem when always have to check all the threads with all the problems there.
So here we have a thread with these rules:
1) Do not post any problem.
2) Post a solution.
3) Show here how You successful installed new board.
4) Post Your BIOS screens of fine working system.
5) Post pics and screenies of Your fine working system.
This should be a help for all who need.

I think the problems people are having when they first boot in DC with TCCD and the nf4 ultra is because they have 2x512 double-sidded DIMM's. I have 2x256mb of single-sidded TCCD, and I had no problems running and booting up the first time in DC.
Man I took a look at the BIOS and theres so many options I have no idea what they mean! Does anyone know some important settings in the BIOS that have to do with overclocking, and what to set it at? Esp. DRAM settings.

This might be a little OT but is anyone having problems with their ethernet connection?
Can't remember where I read them from but possible solutions are:
1. MAC address has to be manually entered in bios
2. The latest NVidia v6.39 drivers are causing BSODs, lockups and/or no internet connections. Use the drivers on your accompanied CD instead
Can anyone confirm this?

Just the ethernet driver yeah, use ethernet driver from cd or 5.10 package. All other drivers appear to be ok from what ive read.

where can i find the MAC ? someone said its on the box ?
EDIT: we need a FAQ - BAD :) I see the point in this thread to just post solutions and tips - but its very hard to keep it only at that...since some issues are not resolved yet (example "where is the mac adress ?") and some issues can only be resolved/cleared by communicating with others.
THEREFORE...*after* we have all the information to specific topic, whatever issue it is....THEN we could compile all the "hard facts" into a FAQ or similiar....the FAQ then would be clear of all the "noise".
Otherwise: Great thread....
Still amazed about the amount of information i (still) get here...eg. how to boot DC w/ 2 sticks TCCD....i am glad i know this now before i finish the build tomorrow/wednesday and freak out because i cant boot etc...
Keep 'em coming :)
Edit2: And..yes...entering the mac manually is..ehrm....weird ? :) Why's that ?

I can't tell if this Athena 500W 24pin PSU is holding my rig up. Right now at stock speeds I am getting 5.1v on +5, 3.3v on +3.3 and 11.75 on +12 rails, and 1.38vcore according to Speedfan. However in the BIOS +5 and +3.3 are a little higher, and +12v is 11.89. Vcore is at exactly 1.4v also. Which one do I believe? Are there any good hardware monitoring programs for this board?

I just seen a picture of the board, and it has 2 stickers on the LAN outlets.
They should contain the 12 digit MAC address. (one might have a 16 digit firewire GUID)
If you can't enter them manually in the BIOS, you are going to have to do it when you flash the BIOS.
This is all the same with awdflash, and it goes like this.
NVMAC:XXXXXXXXXXXX
To break that down, I suggest you look over here (http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=150240#150240).
Yeah I know that ASUS, but awdflash is awdflash in both cases, as is programmed to do the same. I have just taken the DFI awdflash apart, and it has all the commands mentioned in this (http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=227290) thread. (see post by UK_Bloke)
I can't believe DFI have left this out tho, as doing it when you flash is drawn out.
Maybe there is a way to actually enter the digits in the BIOS screens.
I had grief with MAC addresses on an ASUS board, and helped write that guide so been there done that etc and know what a pain it can be :(
EDIT STARTS: Page 101 and 107 of manual. (the one I have anyway)
Machine MAC(NV) Address
Enable this field to enter the MAC(NV) Address in the field below.
MAC(NV) Address Input
Move the cursor to this field and press <Enter>, then enter the
MAC address.
So looks like you can do it in the BIOS screen after all :)

You can manually change the driver through device manager, or if you havnt installed the package yet, you can run the 6.39 installer which (if its the same as the older ones) first extracts everything to (usually) C:\nvidia etcetc. Once its in the setup program, you cancel it and find your 6.37 ethernet driver and overwrite the ethernet driver in the 6.39 folder, then run setup.exe in the 6.39 folder.

ok, finally get my 1 gb corsair to scale without errors in cl 2.5.
I think this board drives ram much stronger than others because I can only use 2.6v and w fan blowing on top. ( bios 0201)
without the fan, memtest #8 would have errors over 2 to 3 pass...
finally can start to play w it after 3 days switching twinmos speed premium n tccds....

I agree with Uranium's post on the first page. I was disturbed by all the problems peeps were having setting up this board. I followed the "boot with one stick of RAM" (GSKILL TCCD) method in dimm "4". I loaded optimized defaults and saved and exited. After that I flashed the 2/01 bios and Dual Channel works great! I did a fresh WinXP SP2 install at default settings no problems. I loaded the new Forceware(6.39) and unlike some of the stories here, I have had no BSOD or crashes while surfing the net or benchmarking whatsoever.
This DFI LP works great. I only had a few hours to overclock last night, but so far I am prime stable at 290 FSB 1:1 2.5-3-3-7 . My voltages are maxed on Chipset/LDT and DDR is at 2.9V (on my Gigabyte SLI my Gskill only liked 2.7V! Go figure). My CPU is at 1.76V currently.
I also didn't experience the ethernet issue where you need to manually enter the MAC address. My ethernet (both ports) worked great with bios defaults and drivers loaded.
Tonight when I get home I'll post my A64 Tweaker settings, maybe that will help those with TCCD problems :)
D
P.S. with these exact voltages and setup besides the DFI LP MOBO, I am getting 10 MHz more on my FSB 1:1 and 110MHZ more in CPU speed. At the same voltages! (I had the Gigabyte SLI before - a good board also).

To tell you the truth, I am not sure. I only had a couple hours to bench. So I started high. I will check it out more tonight. As well as messing with the mem timings more. I can say this board gets the most out of your hardware than any other NF4 board IMHO. I have had the Asus and Gigabyte as well.

It could just be the binning of the OCZ plats. Mine are 4200's and maybe there is a limit on the 3200 sticks. Try 2.9-3.1v and see if it makes any difference and place a fan over the ram. It makes a big difference in temps of the sticks.

xgman, I am running the same settings for the most part as you. I can get 1:1 310 FSB and it has been priming for over an hour. I posted pics of my TCCD settings on this thread: (this was when I was at 305 1:1)
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?p=706536#post706536
But I think it is safe to say this board loves TCCD at 2.5-4-3-7 1T :toast:
Also, for those that wonder about the SLI mod, it does indeed work!

So whered you get the bridge connector then? Did it come with the board?

has anyone attempted the Ultra -> SLI mod yet? if so, did it work?
I have seen a couple of posts showing it does work at least with the current board/driver versions.

Don't think so, because OFFICIALY DFI Ultra-D does not support SLI.

My Ultra D DID NOT come with a SLI bridge. I had one however from my gigabyte SLI board that worked perfectly (they are the exact same length).
BTW, when I did the mod with a pencil I think I used too much lead as it didn't work (I think the lead's resistance was too high). When I bridged the pins with silver conductive ink, it worked like a charm!

It comes with a little thingy and some jumpers and a chip puller to set it up to use two monitors/vid cards, but not the sli special bridge. I have both, and they have different bridges.

"little thingy" = wtf? :stick:
"i have both" = have both what? the SLI and Ultra boards?!?!?!? is that what you mean? In that case I am assuming you are using the Bridge from the DFI SLI board on the Ultra modded? If not, then whered you get the SLI bridge?

Essentially, to cheat Nvidia out of their $20 SLI fee with DFI, you have to buy another board from Gigabyte... HAHAH! (i am not pokin fun at u, cause I know you would have bought the both anyway...)
I really could care less about the extra $20 + margin(throughout the chain of the channel) = $50-60 more the SLI board... but you can't freakin get the SLI board here in the US... Also, it wouldn't bother me to do the SLI mod, but if no Bridge is available then wtf is the point...

To tell you the truth I bought the Ultra because that was all that was available. I was gonna order and SLI-DR. Unfortunately, the SLI's have been sold out all over. I figured I could mod it since I had the SLI Bridge from the Gigabyte which would have been my final board if this DFI wasn't soo damn sweet! :D
By the way, I saw a post yesterday about how to get a Bridge from a distributor in Hong Kong. It was for like 10 bucks or something...

I have a sli and a ultra d. The sli has the sli bridge obviously, and the ultra d has what looks like a smaller version of it. I did not look very carefully at it but I assume it is for using 2 vid cards in the ultra d without official sli support.

It could just be the binning of the OCZ plats. Mine are 4200's and maybe there is a limit on the 3200 sticks. Try 2.9-3.1v and see if it makes any difference and place a fan over the ram. It makes a big difference in temps of the sticks.
Apparently I'm just a dumbass. I bumped it up to 3.1v and now I'm running 2.5-4-3-7 1T at 289, which is great with a x9 multi to put my cpu at 2600. Stable so far. :toast:

you have a very similar system to mine - may I ask what your chipset temp is, mine idles around 50-52C :/
Smargaurdian says my shipset is at 43C at idle. The side panel on case is off, so it will prolly go up a bit once I put it on.

:D The DFI isn't in use yet - only thing I did so far is to change the 2 important jumpers to the longer ones and to replace the BIOS chip with a new one burned in with 201 BIOS. Today I received my waterblock for chipset so now I've got all I need and will start building up new rig soon.
I decided to change SIG when all the work is done........... :toast:

Went well for me too. Installing XP updates now, 2k install went fine as well. No overclocking yet though. Interesting though, I've seen guys not seeing the post screen with an ATI card. I saw it fine with an X850XT-PE and shipping bios (1/25) and still see it with the 2/9 bios.
I did follow some tips here to get this going, I avoided 2x512 to start with, using 2x256 BH-5 atm. After Windows is all up to date and I've made some backups, I'll switch to VX and see how it goes. I also did plug in the nV MAC address in bios, don't know if it helped or not since I didn't use LAN before doing so. Also using on CD NF4 drivers. I gotta add, this may be the first board I've skipped the aircooled checkout with, started right off the bat with the LS. No problems. :)

So I just got mine few hours ago... Stock BIOS 1/25... Booted up with 2x512MB Gskill with no probs...
Early testing shows 320x8 (max benchable linit on my Winnie is 2.72GHz at the moment) 7-3-4-2.5-1T 2.9v passes SPI 16M...
So everything looks promising
I will edit this post as soon as I get more testing done...

Didn't forget about SP 16M, but still need the DFI board because of the voltage fluctuation caused by the booster I can't pass it on NEO2.

Got my SLI-DR on 2/28. Got watercooling set up, board set up that day. 3/1 tried booting up...one of my RAM sticks wasn't working...luckily was just a tiny bit of something on one of the traces off the PCB..wiped it off, plugged it back in, booted straight into BIOS. All great (I have the A.01 revision).
Then, one of my two raptors gave problems..sometimes wouldn't detect, would lock up the system...finally, when trying to format it on the way into windows...it died and started clicking. RMA time. Other one worked like a champ. Installed windows in record time.
Installed drivers, used winflash to update to the 2/18 bios. Started my quest for OCing. Since all is virgin in the system started with RAM.
Hit a wall with errors at 250 FSB 8x multi. (240 no errors in memtest 5). Upped voltage...still errors. Used OPPainter's settings...no errors :) Started getting errors at 255 again. Now burning in at 3.6V with uwackme's burn-in to see how much this baby's got. Wish me luck :)
This board is bloody marvelous :)
