View Full Version : Thin HD heatsink?

Is there a thin heatsink that covers the entire bottom or top of a hard drive? I cant seem to find anything. What about some long thin ones or some that I could line up together so they cover one side of the HD? You see, the hard drive cage in my tower is at the bottom, fitting 5 hard drives. There is a 80mm fan on the right side of the tower on the bottom front, blowing across them long ways, as they are turned around so the connection sockets are facing the left panel. I want the fan to blow accross heat sinks, which would be stuck on one side of them, on either their tops or bottoms. Any suggestions?

Why bother? HDDs put out about 10W heat, and are huge chunks of Aluminium, they don't exactly run hot if you have a fan blowing over them.

Really? On my older system, they got pretty hot sometimes. Im using twin Raptors and a Maxtor DiamondMax 10. Do those get very toasty?

Not really, modern HDDs run pretty cool. I ran a non-heatsinked first generation 15k rpm disk (and they ran HOT) with just a 7 volted case fan blowing over it without any issues. As long as you give them a bit of airflow they'll be fine.

Silentmaxx has a good solution, it is a bit bulky though:

There's also this (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=35-888-105&depa=0)

all you really need is a good fan blowing over them, they dont output that much heat and they dissapate it decently.

A nice bit of work. But the Zalman offered for a fraction of the price will do just as much to prevent transmission of vibrations to the case. I do expect that german one would do more cooling though. But is the extra cooling really needed?

Im gonna look at those links now, but first I wanted to mention something. You see, the reason why I want to do this is that this hard drive is going to be holding very important graphics archives for a retail game Im working on with a team. I CAN'T loose this information. I know, back it up. But still, I want to make sure 100%, this drive will stay nice and cool.

RAID 1, keep multiple backups if you're worried. Heatsinks are a placebo really.

Still, I'll feel safer knowing I've put in the extra effort. Its a matter of peace of mind, not rationality. :)

peace of mind to me would be RAID 1 with nice big 120mm fans blowing over the array.

im going with butcher on this one too.

Anyone know if there is a way to monitor hdd temps without an actual temp probe??

Almost all HDDs have an onboard temperature sensor these days, you'll need an app that can read the SMART data to obtain the temp though. MBM should be able to do it.

Maxtor as a good hdd manu have 1 prob, they dont like heat, and above is not ture they are not longlifed above 50C and sandra soft si can tell you temps btw.

On new case i have no issue as fan 120mm is blowing over it but on older cases i used this >>>>

Akasa Hard Disk Cooler - Blue (SY-002-AK)

kinda cheap and bearing went soon but front fan sucked to hdd and rear fan sucked from both angled.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
These are better quaity both fans suck from hdd

actually, raptors run quite hot, and it would be nice to know that they are under 50C when i use them.

I've been trying out a program called SpeedFan on this computer (parent's) and it seems to be reading the hard drives well enough for me to know I probably need to add a fan to this Medion peice of :banana::banana::banana:.
