View Full Version : Did I kill the P4C800-E D by using Conformal coating

I got a brand new P4C800-E Deluxe and put it on the test bench. 3.2c, 1gig Corsair XMS4000 and BFG 6800 GT, stock cooling. Worked fine, played around with bios settings and overclock until I was satisfied the board was working. Then dissembled it a coated the back side with silicon based Conformal Coating from Chemtronics. On the top side I used the Dow corning syringe type from Danger Den to seal the AGP and PCI sockets around the bottom edge to prevent any moisture from getting under the sockets. Dielectric grease the CPU socket and installed the TEC's to the CPU and Northbridge. Also added heat sinks to the PLL, and Southbridge. But now it won't boot. No beeps, No video. The green light is on the power light is on the drives and CD spin up. All voltages at the connector are normal, CPU, NB, SB, and PLL all get warm. The memory leds flash for a few seconds on power up. The vid card powers up but no signal to turn on monitor. I have removed all the drive, mouse and keyboard connectors but no effect. Even without video the system should boot up to Win2k and reduce the fan speed on vid card. (that's the way I left it last time I turned it off) Is the board dead? or the CPU? I can't understand why the coating would effect it. Can't send it back now. Damn.

maybe the heatsinks are shorting something out? try takeing them off. otherwise begin takeing off that insulation :(

I'd check to make sure the cpu is seated all the way in the socket. I'd also try reseting cmos, as unrelated as it may seem. Another thing to check is as enzor said, that your heatsinks aren't shorting. You might also want to try another videocard...

I have reset cmos, and removed most of heat sinks as I was thinking along those lines. Two of them are stuck fast so I'll get a can of freeze spray at the tech shop tommorow. I removed the NB water block and pelt setup (Neoprene and grease) but am leaning toward the cpu setup as you have suggested. I removed CPU and cleaned some of Dielectric grease twice now. It does get hot like it's working and the overtemp shutdown will power it off if you lift the heatsink. Later I'm going to remove all the foam and grease and clean the socket, put the air cooler back on and give it another go.

Remembering my train of thought now, I have greased, pelted and heatsinked several motherboards, but after loosing the last one due to water drops getting under the AGP socket I wanted to seal the gap between the motherboard and socket. And the spray I used on the back covers the entire surface with a plastic coat. This cannot be removed and I was wondering if it has done something to prevent the board from posting. It was supposed to be non-conductive.

I think you have to look at the component side of your board,
the spray itself seems pretty harmless...
