as of 1/25, for etailers with these items in stock, the x850 xtpe is $626 and the 2x 6800gt sli + 520w psu is $849. with the x850xt pe you're paying a premium of about $150, while the 6800gt's are a very good price at about $375 per card if you assume the psu is worth about $100.
the primary purpose of the system would be to game at 1280x1024 (space issues on my desk and i don't mind playing on a 17" lcd) i'm wondering which setup would be more suitable at those resolutions. price does matter and i have to add that i'd need to purchase another gpu block if i went sli, so all in all the sli system would cost ~$180 including the cost savings of selling off the psu for $100.
a 3rd thing to consider is that the r520 is due to launch in may, but, who knows about it's availability as the r480 was launched before xmas and still is hard to find. if the r520 is available by summer, i would probably upgrade as i've heard amazing things about it.
lastly, i'd have to cancel my order for the x850xt pe later today if the consensus was that sli was a better sytem.
with sli, i'm not too keen on the fact that i'm reliant on nvidia driver releases to support sli. i know that some 3rd party freeware has been released that allows you to force sli on games for which official support isn't released.
