what do you think guys? for my next upgrade i plan to get a 3500+, msi sli mobo, 1gb gskill, but what graphics card should i get, both the x800xl and 6600gt sli are within my budget, what would perform better? i'm thinking the x800 but unsure

by 6600gt sli do you mean getting 2x6600gt? if it's one, x800xl. Otherwise 6600gt in SLI is probably better..

i would chose one 6600gt now if you got the money but if you can afford the xl i would go for it, but the xl dont seem to oc so good so :(

i mean getting 2 6600gt's or 1 x800xl, as they both can be had for around £220

Probably would be an extra £100 for a slight boost with the 6600GT SLI setup, another £50-100 for the board and SLI only supports about a dozen games... I'd go with the x800xl - except for the problem that it's probably not out in the UK! Have to wait until the card is really available, before considering it.

You can make sli work with games unsupported in the drivers, just gotta do a registry hack, or mess with some options in the driver control panel or something like that.

although there is no guarantee it will work.

tbh i think SLI is, currently, mainly for benchers. A x800xl will give you perfectly reasonable performance (beating a 6800gt often). A 6600gt that costs you £110 would be a little suspect, i think. However, the x800xl will probably retail for less than £220 so i'd say the x800xl. And as said, SLI Mobo is another thing.

You could get a dfi ultra d and mod it to a sli dr is it's a big deal paying for the sli mobo

I doubt a x800xl is better than 2x6600gt's and they are pretty nice ocer's where as x800xl = one of the worst ocer's out

How much do the x800xl's go for in US currency?

x800xl $299 msrp

6600gt $199 ea=$400 plus figure the cost of an overpriced sli motherboard and it starts to become pretty clear that the x800xl is a no brainer.

2x6600GT = 1x6800GT, 1xX800XL is better then a 6800GT there :) and we cant forget that ATI has better quality and SLI has problems with games, i would go for a X800XL without thinking :D

eh.. I'd disagree still lol. He planned on getting a sli mobo anyways, I would rather have 1 fast card than 2 slow ones though, I don't really like sli, but it is faster so what can you do but accept it. Hope this isn't where we are headed tho as any kind of standard.

But if you got 400$ to spend, maybe an x800 pro vivo, that would certainly be better than 2x6600gt's I think, or a 6800 GT and then you can get another later.

Seems no one can agree on what you should get, so I'm just throwing out some new options to complicate things :p:

and we cant forget that ATI has better quality

What is that about?

I really feel like a fanboy lol. But recently I just got a bad grudge against ATI. I loved my 9700 Pro, then they released the 9800 XT Later, I thought that was such a crap card. twice the price of a 9800 Pro for what? A card that overheats stock and clocks just the slightest bit better than a 9800 Pro. Then the x800 Pro has only 12 pipes when it could easily have beaten the 6800 GT had it had the full 16, bad decision on ATI imo. X800xt and x800xt pe great cards, tho sometimes hard to find the pe... er make that extremely impossible :p: Then they release the x850xt and they become everything that people complain about nvidia for, yet no one cares. It's a two slot, loud cooler, and requires more power than a 6800 ultra, and none of that was needed, all that was needed is to produce more x800xtpe's and everyone would be happy.

eh... sorry to rant lol, didn't plan on that being a big paragraph but w/e. Most of my complaints arn't a big deal, biggest thing I hated was the 9800 XT, I am looking forward to the r520 if that will help disuade my looking like an nvidia fanboy :toast:

Better Image Quality..

Just spent a while editing that post ^^^, but anyways, I know thats what you meant, but how so do they have worse image quality? I know there were issues before with the nv30 and such, but havn't heard of any problems with the nv40, and the only problems with the nv30 was that they were forced to run 16fpp in some games making them look worse.

The thread originator posted 2 times. you posted 7. Maybe you should buy the sli set. seriously, the debate is over. x800xl is the way to go. Also not every game is optimized to work with sli ;)

well so far of the posts, its 3 for the 6600gt sli and 4 for the x800xl, so I wouldn't say x800xl won and half the x800xl votes were do to cost consideration, and the thread starter already said he can get them both for the same price, but dosn't really matter to me, what he gets just trying to give my input. I'll stop posting in this thread if it's bothering you so much :(

2x6600gt sux big time.
buy 2x6800nu, its much better, $660 price though
i doubt ull ever find a good price for an x800xl
ur only choice is one 6800gt pci e, and u could buy one later and run sli
it has support for most apps that require alot of gpu power.
i wouldnt really want more frames in quake 3 anyway.....

Stay 754 get a 1MB cache AMD 3400 and then 1 good stick of VX / Twinmos and the AGP version of the Ati X800XL.

i've been considering the clawhammer option but they dont seem to clock very well and i'm have a hard time finding one, i think i'll be going the x800xl route as it seems a great card for the price but the expected stock date is 1st march, perhaps then the venice cores will be out and i'll get one of those

Get a 62w mobile, they are known to reach about 3000mhz with a phase changer, and I think around 2600-2700mhz on good air.

Put one 6800GT on a SLI-board and buy another one later.
One 6800GT costs less then 2 6600GT's and will give you better performance most of the time, and you can upgrade your pc for cheap by putting a second 6800GT in your pc.

SLI only works if the drivers have the profile for the game or app, also games have to support it. There is only a handful of games that support SLI atm, I would choose the x800XL.

In addition, it may not OC all that well but the XL has a better performance/price ratio than two 6600GTs. In addition, I THINK you'd want a 256-bit 256mb card for your $299 than two 128-bit 128mb cards for $399.

Here in Aus, 1x6600GT PCI-E is only $275, cheapest 6800GT is $630. So 2x6600GT is a little cheaper than 1x6800GT. Anyway, he said he could get 2x6600GT and 1xX800L at the same price.
