Have a 3.2E SL7PN and my unmodded motherboard died. Got 240 fsb at 3.841 ghz on auto vcore voltage at 1.392 before mobo died. CPU temp was only 28 degrees celsius and mobo was 24 degrees celsius. Looking to get either the Abit IC7-G Max II or an ASUS P4C800 E Deluxe motherboard Rev. 2? Which do you recommend will work best for this prescott processor and why? Also which one has less cvore droop? I plan on sinking all mosfets and pll chip and wil be running dual psu for better power management. Thanks for all your help?
My dead motherboard:( R.I.P.

I doubt your motherboard is totally fried. That burned component is a surface mount tantalum capacitor. Tantalum caps are the best capacitors Performance wise, but they are rather fragile. They really hate heat, and as you probably know, underneith the CPU is pretty hot. They also hate lots of ripple current and overvoltage. I see a lot of burned tantalum caps and lots of worn out ones also.
One of the mods I did to my motherboard was to replace this cap with a slightly higher capacitance and add the missing cap that sits in the Upper right inside of the socket. Also I added all the little missing caps (12 total Small brown rectangles) that are missing on the left side of the CPU socket and inside the CPU socket and added two large tantalum caps to the right side of the socket where you see two empty spots for caps.
I'll be more than happy to take this motherboard off of your hands. the part that is burned costs 2 bucks or less.
As for recommendations??? If it were me, I would just sell the CPU and upgrade to a newer platform.
I'm using the exact same motherboard you have in that pic, just with lots of mods and tweaks (Asus P4C800E-Dlx Rev 1.xx). I'm gettin 282 bus clock and the only thing holdin me down right now is my memory. I'm very impressed so far with the stability of this board with my tweaks.
If you really wanna stay on 478 socket, then I would have to recommend the same board you have already. I'm not sure what the difference between rev. 2 and rev. 1 is, but so far the Rev. 1 is working great for me.

thanks for your help I will let you know what I decide to do. If I upgrade to newer platform the cost of ddr2, pci e video card, and motherboard are a little high atm. Wouldnt it just be better to wait a 6 months to a year for prices to come down since it is relatively new technology?

yes very true, Upgrading costs more than just a CPU and motherboard, But the way I see it is that why spend money on stuff that you will be getting rid of down the road in the near future?? I guess you can always sell your existing equipment tp offset costs. I was really just stating that this would be what I would do in this particular situation. But maybe not cause of dual cores comin out soon.
If your pockets are a bit shallow at the moment due to the "booming" Bush economy, then buying another motherboard or getting the one you have fixed is a great Idea. I'm still on the 478 socket and I am very pleased with the price/performance ratio you can get now cause of the newer stuff being released.
Some people like to jump on the new stuff as soon as it comes out, I like to wait and see what is best and spend money once. The 478 platform has been around long enough that it's pretty easy to find out what's good and what's not and spend your money effectively.
But from what I've noticed in all of my hobbies is that, buying the latest and greatest is a big risk. Something could come out 2 months later that renders your latest and greatest a POS.
