Will Intel's new Smithfield dual core chip come with hyperthreading enabled, this would be awesome if it did, it would be 2 procs that look like 4 procs to your system. If they arent planning on including this in the first releases they should consider it later on, these chips would be a dream for people who love folding!

Intel will probably introduce hyperthreading later on for the Smithfield.
Let me guess, probably when Windows Longhorn is being released since that would be the first OS that can handle a total of 4 cpu's (2 virtual and to real ones).
Ofcourse Intel could implement it in the first release but what they rather like is that you buy another new cpu in may 2006.

Me doesn't like Intel.

There will be no hyperthreading in the first Smithfield CPUs.

I can confirm no HT on the CES rig I was able to poke around on. I went into control panels and saw only two CPU's

if they come out w/ a ht version would it be as good or better then dual xeons? just curious if anyone knows. for those of us who fold our brains out :D

i think they will come with HT later on.

I bet it would be better than dual Xeons it would be able to run 4 copies of D2ol and do it very fast i think, especially the 3.6GHz models and later the 3.8GHz models if they had HT enabled...

yeah since the cores are on the same chip it will probably be faster. it'd be nice if they oc well so i dont have to drop the cash for a 3.6ghz cpu...

Its like a disease, except not that bad.....

HT would be good on the dual core chips...but I think they'll be running hot enough at their initial launch.

Intel probably wants to wait until they've put the Smithfield through a stepping or two to get the thermals down out of the straosphere before trying to push their luck heat-wise by enabling HT.

But they're seriously pushing their luck heat-wise anyway...one Prescott is bad, but dual cores (especially DP dual cores) will probably dim the lights in the house when you turn it on...;)

lol, yea they should make dual core dothans, but i think with water cooling it should be fine, heat wouldnt be a prob for those of us who know about water cooling, not many mainstream users water cool though.

yeah these dual core chips will double as a heater even more than the Prescott. Preformnace wise on dual threaded things this will be nice. Maybe no HT but I think we can live with it for awhile. Altho aren't the server dual cores gonna have HT? Now that would be nice...think of how many D2OL cans would get done. Really nice for D2OL...really nice

haveing HT doesnt increase temps...

jjcom
01-22-2005, 02:30 PM
I didn't think it did much...but it seems like it would be possible for it. since your doing more if you use all of the processors at 100%, not much more

i would think that HT would up the temp a little, the proc is doing 2x 100% when running D2OL...

enzoR
01-22-2005, 03:08 PM
no it does 2x50%. yes it will incease temps alitle though since it runs extra instructions when simulateing itself as 2 cpus

You're right, having HT doesn't increase your temps. Having it enabled does indeed increase the temperature of your CPU (when under full load).

The reason is simple...the previously idle execution engines are now working (on behalf of the logical CPU)...and when they working, they generate heat (as all switching transistors do).

Simply put...HT increases the number of actively switching transistors in your CPU and increases heat output proportionately as a result.

Again, the above assumes both CPU's (the real one and the logical one) are both pegged at 100% usage.

makes sense, so these dual core chips would run very hot with HT enabled especially the prescott based ones as they already run pretty hot as single core chips....

jjcom

yeah, 130watts about...Those chips are hot...should be interesting on how these things are going to be kept cool unless your using water cooling or something

yea im very courious about what kind of cooler Intel will put in the package....

jjcom
01-23-2005, 03:35 PM
Yeah, same...probly will be highly reccomened to be used in BTX cases. That would help a bit...but still...you'd need something like a Cu/Alu heatsink...something like a copper core going upward and a alu fins and Cu fins. Would make sence to me

thay are gunna send a fridge with the chip...and in the instruction manual will say "plug in fridge for 1 hour then turn computer on" lol...i hope they don't do this
