Good morning everybody,

2 hours ago, I woke up and was getting ready to go to work and my computer running fine just downloading somethings from the net and with boinc crushing Seti!

For some reason, I started smelling something burned and heard the machine go off! :stick: I rushed from the bathroom went straight to my room and the funny smell imediatly made me realize it was something wrong.

The board was with power, green led on, the psu seems to have energy, but the strange thing is that the artic cooler fan stays running even with the pc not connected. Just stops when I unplug the power cord on the psu.

I didn't have time to check what burned off but with this explanation can you give me some clues?

Ask whatever u want! :(

My configuration at the time, goes higher:

Cheifetec 420 Psu 3.3v modded@3.5 [3.5v at idle that gives 3.3 on load] [on a Coma ]
P4c 3.0c@3.9 [260 Fsb]
Asus P4c800 Dlx [Vdimm modded] [Dead :flame:]
1024 Mb DDR [2x256 Ocz Le & 2x256 Ocz El] w/ active cooling [fan blowing]
Ati x800 Pro Vivo@XT PE [Pro Clocks@24/7]
160 Gb Maxtor [Sata]
40 Gb Seagate [Ide]
Creative Audigy 2
Pinnacle PcTvTuner
Dvd Rom
Dvd +/-R/Rw
Chiller @ -10ΒΊ [Maxed: -40ΒΊ]

I think this is it!

Really want some advice.

PS: I've been some minutes wondering around the case and saw nothing really burned and the smell seems to be from the front of the case.

Best wishes to you and "luck" to me

Jorge Lopes

Any place on the board I could start?

Can the graphics be burned too? Please not God!

Yesterday at night the pc just shutdown 2 times with no kind of reason, didn't make a blue screen or what so ever. Just puff!

Does this means the psu was overvolting the 3.3v modded line? Is it possible to have a psu alive but with some burned components?

Best wishes

how have you got the chiller insulated? it sounds like a condensation problem if you are running -0 temps.

 The damage a drop of water could do
You never know, better check on that.

While replacing the psu, check the molexes on that psu and on the diskdrives (and your graphics card) if they have bad contacts, that can destroy (or at least "disturb" you psu)...

A sistem like yours deserves a PowerStream or a TruePower psu with adjustable lines :D

Good luck! Hope it's only the psu and nothing else damaged...

Ah yes, and if you inspect your board, after checking for burned chips, check if no capacitors are leaking. (top side should be flat, if they are a bit curved on the top, it's likely that they are out of spec, what I call "cooked dry")

Hey folks, bad news...

My board is totally burned next to the usb ports, I think it was an old webcam that made too much heat on a certain chip and the insulation of my block over the board heated too much and caused a total mayhem on my P4C800. :(

The Psu, a Chieftec, is burned too, I'll try to revive it with the help of a friend, but the board I don't even think I could RMA it! :(

I'll post some pics later because I'm at work right now!

Now my system is:

Qtec 550w
P4c 3.0c@3.9 [260 Fsb]
Abit Ic7-G [unmodded] (want to mod it,ehehehhe ]
1024 Mb DDR [2x256 Ocz Le & 2x256 Ocz El] @ 2.75v
Ati x800 Pro Vivo@XT PE [Pro Clocks@24/7]
160 Gb Maxtor [Sata]
40 Gb Seagate [Ide]
Creative Audigy 2
Pinnacle PcTvTuner
Dvd Rom
Dvd +/-R/Rw
Chiller @ -10ΒΊ [Maxed: -40ΒΊ]

PS: Another thing, I remmembered. I'm having much trouble to reinstaling windows xp with my 160 gb disk on this system, firts because it recognizes the active partition as my 2nd partition wich is full with downloads, and when I try to use Partition Magic to play with the partition it says its "Bad" not reconizing any thing on the disk.

Hope you understood my English.... it's been a bad day! :stick:

wow sorry to hear it

Auch... But on the other hand, new stuff to play with

About the disk, you might experience those problems if one of your partitions is bigger than 120Gb.

Worse would be that it is damaged when your psu died... (psu seldom die without giving you a reason to remember them)
--> corrupted partition table or damaged boot sector
If that is the case, find a way to backup the data that was on the disk and use the Maxtor-tool to do a factory reformat of that disk...
If that doesn't work... rma m8 :(

Ouch... i hope that psu didnt kill anythign else when it went down.

Wanna see some photos of the mayem! :D

About the disk I think it somehow got affected by the short circuit of the psu because I can't managed the partitions on it but the files are well recognized by XP.

Backing up almost 110 Gb of downloads to a Seagate 160 ATA, it's taking hours!

I'll look for the tool you're refering Oneyedk, on the maxtor site must have that. ;)

Best wishes to all!

PS: I'm modding my Ic7 now, the most important and needed are the Vdimm and Vtt right? Or all those hipro5 mods are necessary?

if you do alll you might be able to run your BH5 1:1 260mhz. use the mods from malvescorner.com ( you may have to google that.) those are simpler and the VTT mod posted there is more effective.

The utility is called "PowerMax" and they call it "diagnostic" ;-)

I think on IC7 vDroop vDimm and Vtt mods will do, but if you want to go to the edge as Hypro5 did, you'll have to follow his lead :D
--> you could steal some components from the broken ASUS...

nah he doesnt need vdroop as he aint running a pressy.... VAGP helps loads and so does vnb. i think he should do all actually thats the xtremespirit :toast:

Oops, you're right...

Never did a vAGP-mod myself, does it help that much???

so you say you smelled a little something funny huh?

Guess I did! What a mayhen on that board...

Abit is running fine, the only thing now stoping me is the lousy vdimm, got to do that mod quickly.

I was able to get in the asus with the mod on the board and on the psu the 4 mems to give 216 @ 2-2-2-5 @ 3.3v. Now I only can do 208 @ 2.5-3-3-7 @ 2.75! :(

The disk problem was resolved using the maxtor tools, but sometimes it hangs just before entering windows, just do a reboot and it goes fine, maybe the MBR is not good, got to fix that.

I had some bin images on my downloads partition and now are corrupted, got to find a tool that can fix them, because windows scan says everything ok.... :stick:

Glad to hear the maxtor-thingy worked for you...

About the boot problem, maybe there is some problem with the "motor" (doesn't spin up fast enough)... Could be damaged by the death-struggle of your psu...
I don't suspect an MBR problem, since all works fine in the second boot...

good insulation on the back of the board? b/c that burn next to the hsf mounting hole looks like it could be a water short.

Yes vicent!

I have a plate of acrilic glued with neopreme to avoid condensation.

I don't think that was the case of water short because this s:banana::banana:t only happened when I connected a usb camera to the board. :(

Now working with a ic7-g un-modded, my cpu is doing 260@1.55v in WC.

Thanks again
