I'm having some system instabilities when tring to open/run games or close them or shut down Photoshop.
I have narrowed it down to mainly to my Geforce 4 4600. ( The card still seems to play well as far as perfromance, but it locks constantly in games and exiting out of Photoshop / I tried updating and backdating the drivers and no avail, even after down clocking it I get no change)
I tried an ATI 9600 AIW and it ran the games ,but not a smooth as the G4 does when it does happen to work)
here is my setup now.
Cheftec case.
TT purepower butterfly 480
Aopen AX4G-Pro
P4 2.8 C
Crappy samsung PC2700 512 meg DDR (possibly part of the problem)
Seagate 7200 8meg IDE drive
and Geforce 4 Ti 4600.
I have deff narrowed the instability to the Vidoe card but possibly the ram as well or MB (real intermitant)
I guess I will try the Video card and see what happens.
BUT
am I giving up using an AGP card over a PCI-X? later when I get anew MB,CPU combo I'll hve to get AGP will I be leaving a whole lot on the table?
I would like to not have to touch this thing for about 2 years after I do the CPU MB upgrade.
I have a max of $400 to get this machine stable and running Farcry, HL2, DOOM3 and what ever cool FPS come out the next two years.
The case,HDD and PS should be good to go any input.
the video Card replacement is a must but I dont want to lose potential performance later by sticking with AGP.
I think the Nvidia 6600GT in AGP if I can find one will be a winner.
for the whole package it would possibly be an AC7-G MB and a stick of corsair PC3200 along with my P4 2.8 then later get another stick of ram for Dual channel but that will limit me to an AGP.
Sorry if the post is discombobulated.
