This is probably nothing, and I“m probably over optimistic but wouldn“t it be fascinating if it would be true? :D

Noticed weird thing today, when changed cooler to Asus X800XT PE card.

I have Connect3D X800 Pro Vivo card which gpu overclocks almost too well -> 690MHz core with aircooling 3DMark05 through 7625 points (http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm05=326060).

Picked this card up because it“s core looked strange, all the text on gpu was printed smaller than in other cards that I have seen before. GPU closeup (http://www.akiba-pc.com/Connect-X800/0429SS.jpg)

Notice "SS" ending week code (0429SS).
All other cards that I have seen have "AA" ending week code.
This Asus card that I saw today, also had smaller letters printed to gpu than usuall and it“s week code also ended "SS".

Those two letters after weekcode probably mean plant or line where these chips have been manufactured, but Strained Silicon also fits quite well ;)

I haven“t tried how it overclocks yet, but this would be quite big thing if it would be true (I even doubt it my self).

Which video card is the GPU pic from? How old is it? Interesting.

It“s from Connect3D X800 Pro Vivo.
The card is three months old IIRC.

hmm, isnt Strained Silicon an AMD-developed tech (i dunno much about Strained Silicon, so correct me if im wrong)

Drool.... is this air cooling @690 or like industrial strength benching air cooling? Either way that is freakin ridiculous. You beat my 05 score by OVER 1000 points, and I have the top (FM app.) 6800 Ultra score on the ORB!!!! Now if you will excuse me, I have to cry now.

SS means it's from a different silicon supplier, instead of the usual AA. Technology is the same. You just got lucky with a good GPU :)

I have the same layout with 0446SS ;) card does 600mhz core stock cooler stock 1.41v in a 77f matx case :). Mine is a sapphire x800xt pe :)

It was developed by IBM who helped AMD and who knows who else.

Strained SOI substrates are used in Prescotts, with limited success.

Anyone got a lazy link to what exactly strained silicon is?

what temps have ya got that ya can oc it 2 690Mhz on core?

who knows? maybe they would run even hotter and clock worse without ss... ;)

IBM / AMD <2005 strained silicon
IBM/ AMD =>2005 DSL Dual Stress Liner or Strained Silicon 2

http://www.reed-electronics.com/semiconductor/article/CA490112?pubdate=1%2F1%2F2005&industryid=3032

TSMC low k dielectrics on 130nm and 90nm
cheaper process on 110nm

Ati will be doing low K, nvidia more likely to get a SS or SS2/DSL part out if they stick with IBM and not go TSMC.

why is this in the benchmarking forum as it has nothing to do with running any 3d benchmarks for the xtremesystems 3d team?

To put it another way

<2005 FX-55 strained silicon

Coz it might matter in 3-6 months time ;)

I dont think it is. A few 9600XT cores managed to reach 700 too, and they're a similar process

I got to 670 on my stock sapphire cooler - and that ain't fit to cool a northbridge.
