I have this crappy Aspire powering my system right now. I know that is lame, but I am still nt sure which PSU to pull the trigger on, thinking Powerstream 600.
Anyway, I think - actually, I know that power is holding my 6800GT back. I want to try out a second PSU that I have sitting around to see if that helps.
But I recall reading somewhere that one should use a different PSU for the GPU. Can anyone confirm this?

Do you mean "reading somewhere you should"'nt? If that is your question, then I can tell you that some people tried to use a second psu for their x800 cards and it killed them. For some reasons x800s have to be run with the system psu. I havent heard a problem with using a second psu with 6800 though. Im not saying it isnt harmful, I just havent heard anything about it. If you meant "that one should", then yes, it will help because the video card is the only thing demanding power from the source so it will get full power assuming the psu can provide it.

I wouldn't do it, just buy a 600W Powerstream instead.
It's a shame blowing your 6800GT for nothing.

I'd be interested to hear why this happened.
I'm scared away now from doing it with my 6800 GT. I'll just use it to power the drives and fans.
I am planning on a 600W Powerstream, but I do want to test this 6800 GT and see WTF. I really think power is holding it back.

yeah, just use the second PSU to power fans and Hard drives. Let the MB and the graphics on the same PSU. Safer that way...less chance of :explode: :flame:

your GT is at 450/1110 (according to sig).......that isnt exactly low Not stable since I hooked up more drives and water cooling. The temp drops nearly 35c and it got less stable. I know it has to be power.
I know people here decry dual-12v rail PSUs, but I'd love to try one for my rig. I know my 6800 loves its own 12v cable even with a single rail. I'm leaning 600W Powerstream...

i have 2 rails and i built a joiner to make 2 rails goiing to the 6800.
before there was 1 12v for cpu/mobo/gpu and 1 for drives fans and lights but now the video card has 2 rails and this takes some load off the cpu rail too becasue drives dont use much
i havent had a chance to see cpu oc improve yet
