External triggers, any help appreciated

Hey guys, if this is in the wrong forum please move to appropriate one.

I need to make an external trigger to trigger a windows command, basically just a button to start something off in windows. Any programming that needs doing will be done in VB as its all i know. What is the easiest way of doing this? The switch needs to go in to a parallel or serial port at back of comp.
Any questions or tips would be really apreciated.

perhaps easier to program one of those internet / multimedia keyboard buttons to do this? I program some of them different than what they are supposed to do on my MS keyboard

yeh, could do that, have to see if the client would be happy with that. I think ive found a way of doing the switch, didnt realise there were some kits for using switches to do this sort of thing around, but if it doesnt work out i will do it that way i think.
