View Full Version : CRT for LCD - Good choice?
HI,
I have a NEC Multysync FP1350X 22" crt monitor which is great but it's a monster in size and weights about 100lbs. So I want a 19" fast response LCD. I am about to pull the plug on the Viewsonic VP912B.

I use the PC for everything, work, gaming, DVDs etc. What do you guys think? Is it a good choice or will I miss my CRT a lot?
Thxs.

I had the 22" IIYAMA and just replaced it the the 20" Dell 2001FP (really wanted a 1600x1200 16ms truecolor monitor, 1280x1024 is not enough for me)
So far I'm very happy with it, LCD's with DVI look very sharp and it doesnt hurt the eyes after hours of work like CRT's
Game wise, I've been using it with HL2 and CS Source mostly and I don't notice any ghosting to talk about... havn't tried it with DVD's though
So I say go ahead!

i've done similar. I had a 21" sony trinatron crt, but then i couldn't take that monster to college with me, so i got a dell 1800fp and i'm absolutly happy with it. Great for gaming and anything i do on it.

Ghosting is real as well as screen door effect. But you need to look for it to find it. I don't have problem at all. Colors look much more saturated and cleaner. Sharpness is undisputed. Only thing would be if you are graphics pro, you will see colors are not exactly what it should be... :P Other than that, it is good time to start migrating except the prohibitive cost of LCD.
lcd's when you get into the 19+ inches aren't all that much more expensive, then actual 19" crt's, which are really 20 and 21" crt's

uh.. 19" LCD costs $700+ easily here and 22" CRT's can be had for $450 and less...
The price difference is huge. I got my NEC refurbished at Fry's for $250, the Viewsonic is $690 after tax and shipping. But if I can regain 2ft of desk and avoid to rent a truck just to transport the monitor when I move out, then I think that it's worth it.
JINU117, are you talking about the Viewsonic that I wanna buy? Do you have it?
Thx for the opinions. :)

Nah I have VP201B. None of fast LCD can even start matching good CRT on color reproduction yet due to nature of design. But you either need decerning eyes or do major graphics work (with colors) to notice really.
For someone like me coding, gaming, browsing all the time, it just is much more important to have clarity and less eye strain.

wouldnt classify myself as needing the greates color reproduction there is, but I do a fair amount of graphics work and LCD's always look somewhat "flat" to me in terms of color fullness..
Like looking at flack black vs. gloss black

There still isn't an LCD out there that looks as good as a quality crt for gaming. If you are picky about gaming, you won't like the LCD. If you are a casual gamer, the LCD will be fine. The LCD for day to day stuff is also just fine.
I use a 17" Viewsonic LCD which I love for day to day duty. But, for my fire breathing gaming rig I use a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2070. NO LCD on the planet compares. I've tried replacing it with the top of the line LCDs and I always change back within hours and return the LCD. I'm sick of the size and wieght of the crt but I will tolerate nothing less than perfection for gaming.

I went from a 19" sony studio crt to a dell 2005fp 20" widescreen lcd and have been extremely pleased.
