i always jus made a very thin layer on the cpu. but reading posts here seems like some people put on ample amounts on both cpu and heat sink.

So how much of this stuff is best to put on my cpu??

this is what i do.

i put about a dime size on my heatsink, put my hand in a ziplock bag, and rub that stuff in really hard for about 10 minutes.

then i take some lens cleaning paper, or a coffee filter, and wipe away the excess.

then i put a stripe of as5 on my cpu and spread it out with a torn page from a magazine. usually the ibm or sony pages from pcmag bcause they are thick++++

oh and before you do any of the above steps, clean both the core adn the heatsink with alcohol.

umm ive always thought it was a grain of rice on the die, make its paper then then rub a small bit on hte heatsink wipe off with a lint free cloth and done

kinda depends on the chip...on a barton core; sure a "grain of rice" will work out, but on these 64's and their IHS...i think you might need a little more ;)

yeah, they say 1.5 grains :P
(they being arctic cooling people)
i used about 2 grains and it oozed off the edges onto the socket's excess plastic :)

y u should need more?

the DIE is still in the middle :P

though the die is very large in comparison to the XPs. anything more than 2 grains of rice is major overkill, unless the heatsink has a crappy bottom

teh grain of rice deal is a load of carp.. its ok if ur really lazy, but if you want to do it right its not a very good idea.

spread thinly (yes thinly) with a razor blade.....
easy

sure, but the heat it puts out is spread out over the whole IHS...hence the name: integrated heat SPREADER :stick:

yes, the spot right above the core is "hotter" than the rest, but thats no reason not to have TIM on the "warm" parts too...

though the die is very large in comparison to the XPs.

depends...130nm cores are bigger...90nm cores are about the same/smaller

HERE (http://www.ocforums.com/showpost.php?p=3169033&postcount=1) is a post with a few nude (64 core) pics...enjoy the free "Geek Pron" ;)

With the Arctic Silicon paste I used, you can just use your fingertips to spread it.
I never used Arctic Silver so I don't know if it will work with that too but with the silicon it worked nicely.

I usually just use a grain.. you shouldn't need much. Remeber that metal conducts heat a lot better then paste does and that the paste should really just be filling in the holes and cracks on the heatsink/die.

whenever i take my heatsink off (slk-947), there is no paste on the cpu. Its just on the edges of the heatsink not in contact with the die. Am i doing something wrong? I always use a very small layer of paste and follow the directions...

I put a little bit on my T-bred core, so theres a plob that uses about 1/3 of the core, then I get some plastic wrap and spread it around alittle. once the whole core is covered I put the heatsink on and away I go, I just wipe the extra AS5 off with a paper towel and it does fine for me

easy

I second this.. it is a fantastic way to ensure an even, paper thin layer.

I put a fairly large blob on the die and then spread it out with a credit card. I always like to use a bit more than necessary because I figure that any excess will be squeezed out of the way by the heatsink's pressure.

how you DO NOT DO IT:
put blob on, put on heatsink, get afraid of crushing core and take sink off. put sink back on and move on, 3months later find out that your conact was really bad thats probly why 1.75v never worked unless the AC was on lol guess who? lol I've learned now.

I've heard serveral people use a credit card to spread as well as a razor blade. The Razor blade works well to determain if your heatsink is flat as well. If you use too much and your using an AXP the excess could get on the conacts...

I just spread it on like I spread peanut butter and jelly on bread. 1/4 inch Thick and full, on both the die and the heat sink.
