View Full Version : Thermal epoxy/adhesive on a mach II

To solve the mach II + a64 dtr problem, ive decided to lap an old 1/8" coldplate to use it as a dummy IHS, rather than mod the a64 mounting kit. i figured i would thermal epoxy/adhesive the coldplate to the Mach head, but then i remembered, everyone says to put stuff with thermal adhesive in the freezer to break it up...does that mean if i try to epoxy the plate to the head, it will just pop off when the mach is turned on?

Probably yea. Because the change in temp in the evap and in the cold plate would probably be pretty varible theres even more chance for that too happen.

what would be wrong with laying the cold plate on top of the cpu and then fastening the mach II head as you normally would? i've thought about this as well as i have a few cold plates kicking around from the good ol tec days. If i were you i would just do what i did and cut the a64 mounting kit standoff's off. I spent 4 hours trying to get good contact and stripped 2 sets of bolts before i just said screw it and shaved them off...i was surprised how well this worked and i have real solid contact now. just be carefull of the contact on the cpu when tightening..

OH and i forgot to mention, if your concerned about your kit being narfed cuase it is just too close to the cpu to even mount the head, then just use nylon washers between the motherboard and the mounting plate. I found that the seal string provided more than enough of a spacer as even when it is squished down as much as it will go, it still provides somewhat of a standoff.

well, how would i stick the coldplate to the cpu and keep it there while i mount the head?
if modding the kit is that easy, i might just do that anyway

well as far as holding the plate there i'm not sure, thats why i just forgot about that idea and just shaved the standoff's off using a bandsaw.

Just use some thermal paste...it will stick but still be removeable when need be. Don't think you need to gop it on there either....normal amount should hold it long enough to mount it. Worth a try.

you're right, the viscosity of some regular thermal paste should probably be enough to hold it to he head for mounting...
thanks guys.

sorry its a bit off topic
