View Full Version : Which stepping is best for 3000+ "winnie"?

I'm currently on a 3500+ "winnie" that can do 2.6GHz PrimeStable, but not anymore whatever I do, not even for benchmarking. So I think I'll try a 3000+ for fun. Over to the question. Here at work we have to different stepping on the CPU available.

0442TPMW
and
0445SPBW

Should I choose one over the other, or is it same sh*t" different stepping. I thing I'm going to choose the last of them, because in my experience the newer the CPU's, the better the OC. All feedback willl be appreciated.

Wait. So you have a dead Winchester, too?

No, the 3500+ is alive and kicking. I'm just looking for a higher OC that's all. If the 3000+ is crap, I'll just put in my 3500+ again ;)

Stock retail HSF. Too bad it's dead. I might downgrade to a 3500+ Newcastle in hopes of having a CPU that lives just a tad bit longer.

Nice results.

I was hoping to get a CPU that would do 2.7GHz stable. Maybe that's hoping for to much with a 3000+. I don't see a point in changing my 3500+@2.6GHz for a 3000+@2.6GHz.

btw: What killed your CPU?

wanna send me that 3500+ if you like the 3000+ more :)

There is currently only one stepping of the Winchester and it is D0.

You'll read it on numerous posts. The memory controller is shot.

if there is a week 45 i say go for that, could have strained silicon... also newer chip often means better performance.

Okay, i just installed the 3000+. I went for the 0445SPBW stepping one, and it seems I made good choice.

2.8GHz seems very stable. I don't have the time to Prime it now, but it went straight through SuperPI 8M. I'll have to Prime it tonight. The 2.9GHz is just for show. I tried a 3GHz aswell, but no luck I'm afraid. Anyway, I'm going to try to find some RAM I can run 1:1 with, then I'll be happy :D

Could U run @2.5 or 2.6GHz with Vcore DF ? :D

I didn't try. Started at 2.6GHz with 1.5v, and went from there and up. Haven't tried to give it more juice either, because I'm on air cooling now. Don't want to blow it just jet ;)

Kane,

From which shop did you buy it in Norway? That's a pretty new one you got. I wouldn't wan't to get an old as i see many shops still have the 3000 in stock.

I got mine at www.psdata.no We got this "bunch" in yesterday. Yeah, it seems that the newer they are, the better they OC. Don't remember how many we got, so even if you order one, I can't say for sure you get from the same "bunch"

To bad. I was just about to order one but since i could potentially get a "very old" winny, i would be pissed to no end. What's the max htt that cpu can do with a divider? Folks with prometeia will have to run those with a divider to max the cpu.
350*8 with a 166mhz divider on the memory would look nice. Thats 280 and just perfect for dual 512mb ram.

Good luck with Priming it. Prime 95 and Winchesters don't go together well. My Winchester 0442 and 0441 are both stable above 2.7, 24/7... but the minute I run Prime it fails.

So I tried running Prime stock... and whuddya know... it fails after an hour on stock settings! Apparently this is a HUGE problem here on these forums... and should only take a second to find the thread (I'm too lazy right now).

I suggest just keep running 32M SuperPi instead.

Yeah I've heard that it's often a problem. I Primed mine now while I was out. Came back and it was still going. Had been on for just over 2 hours. That's good enough for me. Also tried to run a 32M SuperPI and that also went without problems. Can't remember the score though. Will try to get my hands on some RAM I can run 1:1 with. That would be awsome :D

wow dude, thats awesome, although the sandra marks seem kind of low, but I could be wrong. but prime stable at 2.8 is awesome.

That 3000+ is dead, so there's no way for me to do the runs again.

Trust me. I'm not here to cheat in order to receive praise from others. I usually don't post a screenshot unless I have tested my system for 100% stability. Manufacturers do not pay me or compensate me for endorsing their products, so what you see coming from my end will always be the result of my honest testing as an enthusiast.

On a side note, I have years of experience as a web designer. I've served in the capacity of Director of Web Development for Microtek in ancient times. I'm fairly confident I can fake a screenie if I really felt the need to be admired and smiled upon. ;)

you run HTT 290 and divider 166 ? so ram frequency is 237Mhz?

You are correct. 9x290MHz and 5/6MHz memory divider on my OCZ EL PC3200 Platinum Revision 2 modules. I am no longer using that CPU so the information is already outdated.

Kane, what aircooling do you use for that 2.8 screen? I received mine, and it was a 04/43. Not so good with the stock cooling. Prime failed after an hour at 2.47 and just over 1.5V. I know the stock amd cooler is terrible but it would be interresting to know.
