View Full Version : Another single stage

Last week I got a cheap compressor from ebay, and so I decided to build another single stage. It's a L'unite R134a compressor, and I'll charge it with R290(propane). The tubing should be OK, I only have to braze it in, in the next days, when I have some time.
Will 3m of .8mm captube be Ok?
This phase change unit is much smaller than my last :)
What I've done today:
The compressor

Condenser

I made a loop for the discharge line

I'll use a cheap stainless steel line as a suction line

The ubend, hope this is ok

I really love my new torch, especially when I braze bigger copper pipes/blocks.
This is the smallest tip

What about condenser's cooling?

Nice torch, how much you paid?

I'll put in two 120mm fans, that should be enough.
The torch was ~80€, I got it from ebay, the original price is about 400€ :D
btw: The evap will be selfmade, I have to look for copper blocks tomorrow.

AFAIK that captube is ok

Today I have some new pics. I'm almost finsished with brazing in the lines, only the line from the compressor to the condenser is missing. I'll to that tomorrow. I hope I have enough time to charge it on Monday or Tuesday :)

Only the tube from the compressor to the condensor isn't brazed in yet

I belive you might want to change your oil first, if you had POE inside (and its almost sure) it catched humidity for sure and turned in to a acid.

*edit*

i think you use too much oxygene

I agree with berkut about the oxygen :)

But with a small tip, the cone just is very short...

The compressor was filled with nitrogen till today, I closed the dicharge pipe then (because it isn't brazed in yet).
Ok so the blue cone should be smaller? Thx :)

nice neat work.
like how ya did the capillary tube.
steel flex will be ok just may stretch over time.

Yes I know that this is not the "perfect" line, but it was relatively cheap.

thx gclg2000 and dutchman.pt

I think ladarse had a similar evap, don't know it excatly. It's a very cheap evap, and it's not difficult to build it.

thx :D

Tommorow I'll insulate the whole system, I'll try to find the optimal chrage too

Nice :)

What I would suggest though is three caps instaed of 2 and make it more maze like inside by cutting slits not holes and three caps with forcing the refrigerent to go back for back forth back forth then into suction all with greater flow. It won't affect the temps but it will affect the cpu cooling and how much heat you can remove from the cpu. I would say that you can optimise that unit to do possibly -65+-5.

You have frost all the way up to your compressor, not good. That means that liquid is going back through your suction line into the compressor, and this can damage the compressor.

Epsilon
12-28-2004, 09:31 AM
No, as long as the frost isn't on the compressor, everything is OK

kayl
12-28-2004, 09:58 AM
lookin good.
time to insulate now

i'm a newbie here so ignore me, but with the cap tube inside the suction line, isnt it heating the captube and making temps bad? personally i would insulate the suctionline then wrap the captube around the outside then further insulate the captube.

looks to me its acting like a heat exchanger and cooling the suction line.

anyway i'm a newb so probably wrong :p:

Its the other way around. The captub is hot (remember it comes from the condensor), and suction line very cold. So you're cooling the captube in order to increase the effciency of the evaporator.

In your place, I should leave out some of gas, there's little too much gas, IMO this frost must be away from sunction inlet something around 10 cm. I know if you add heat load for evaporator, this frost will be more away from sunction inlet, but with insulation it will
be more closed to him...

As said Epsilon, it isn't dangerously, until compressor's surface around sunction inlet
isn't covered by frost

Thx for this ideas, I'll think about it. I only used two caps, because the local store had no caps bigger than 22mm. And I'm very impatient :D

wr0x2: I agree with Epsilon and Tonic, as long there's is no liquid entering the compressor, cold gas cooling the compressor isn't bad at all.
kayl: thx, insulation comes tomorrow :)

Thx for that hint Tonic, I'll play with the charge ratio tomorrow!

After several problems (had a leak in the flexible line and so on) it's ready now. Here are the last pictures:

Adding the first layer of Armaflex

Added the second layer of insulation on the suction line. Here you can see the insulated evap too.

I took a plexi head from an old watercooler. The plexi glass that I had at home was too thin. Then I saw out a rectangle, and drilled the holes for mounting.

Was just about to ask you how you cut the plexi so clean, almost as if it was cut by a lazer, guess maybe it was, LOL... Good job.. Nice clean unit..
