I have aqquired an old LEC R12 freezer from a scrapyard and have stripped it from the fridge unit and I am going to build my first waterchiller with it. The freezer works fine. I have some refrigeration experience, but I haven't built a waterchiller before. I know that I need to use denatured alcohol instead of water. I was told to insulate the icebox (which is the freezers evaporator) and use it as a res. The icebox it too small to submerge a pump. But I have some q.'s.

1) Should I drill through the icebox (avoiding the exaporator's tubing of course) and attach some barbs or whatever so I can connect it to the pump?

2) What sort of pump should I use?

3) What sort of tubing should I use?

4) Anything else I should know?

1.) No you can just have the pipes going through the lid so you do not have to uses barbs. Just make sure where the tubes come through is filled in to make it air tight. barbs could be used but it will be hassle for no reason.

2.) Ehiem 1250 are good.

3.) Tygon tubing is best. It is less suseptable to corrosion from the liquid that you would be using (I suggest denatured alcohol). watch you do not walk in to/stress the tubing when the chiller is cold because the tubing may break. Insulate well too.

4.) Sorry too tired to type lol. You will get good advice from other people I am sure.

UPDATE!

I have ordered some more tubing, a pump, and I have sealed off the icebox using silicone sealer. The fridge's electronics don't work properly. The switch to activate/deactivate the compressor on the fridge's dial doesn't always work, possibly a loose connection. But I might play around with it and solder it to startup as soon as it is plugged in. I will start doing some insulation on the icebox and buy alcohol tomorrow. This seems to be going well :)
