I'm having some trouble with my old Pentium 4 Wilamette (256k) computer, it loads windows and then randomly just turns off, and sometimes when windows is starting it will just shut down and I can hear everything go quiet.

I've replaced the hdd, power supply, and also put on a new cpu fan (the old one was probably nearing the end of its lifetime) and the problem still persisits.

In addition to this, when I try to install windows on the new hdd, I keep getting errors that the file it's trying to copy off the cd is corupt. I'm 100% sure the cd is fine, the only thing I can narrow it down to is the mobo, processorm and ram.

I don't usually work with p4's and Im in a bit of a dark hole :(

I have gotten similar problems when oc'ing cpu or ram too far. Now I assume you have downclocked or are at baseclock so I would run memtest and rule out ram problem. If that checks out fine I would say cpu is going bad

Will do, I've got a copy of it around here somewhere. The ram is pc133 @100mhz, cpu at 1700mhz 1.75V (yeah the old ones are default high volts).

I would guess the mobo before the CPU. CPUs don't normally die that soon, unless you were overclocking...which would make sence...mmm...maybe try out another board?

I'll try another board. The cpu has been running nearly 24/7 for 4 years :D. It's always been reliable till now. The current mobo is an asus P4B (sdram)

I remember back a little while, someone had this problem and it turned out it was the power switch so you may want to try and "hot" wire it to work, by connecting the two pins on the board that the switch is usally taking up.

Tried that already, didnt change a thing. I think its a memory issue because im getting BSOD's occasionally.
