View Full Version : 3.4e vs. 3.4c
Well I spent most of last night reading about 3.4e vs 3.4c. Obvious the "presHOTT" runs hotter, and supposedly preformace worse on a clock for clock basis. But I couldn't find any benchs on the new 3.4e's iwth d0. 3.4c seems to OC worse in most cases, but more stable. I'd be running this on phase change and am just wondering what your pick would be. Or should I just ruin the whole budget and go fx-5x.

Fx55 at stock equals to about 4.2Ghz intel doesnt matter which core, speed wise they are nearly the same. You should be able to get an fx 55 to 3.2Ghz with some nice ram. That is approximately 5.2Ghz intel. If you are getting intel than prescott would probably be better since you have phase change cooling.

what do you do? 3D gaming, work with 3D stuff etc. If thats the case than the FX-55 would be your best bet there. If you like encoding then the P4 would be a better choice, but some programs encode faster on the A64 and some encode faster on the P4 so it really depends on the program. You'll probly have a good chance at geting 3.2ghz out of the FX-55

I'd recommend some "WINNIE POWER" !!! instead of an FX because the next FX, to be out at the same time as the X900, will be 90nm and 2.8 stock. And you're saving close to $500 just by having a setup that runs a 3500+ 939 0.09 at 2.6 24/7.
EDIT: OH SHOOT, didnt realize this was the Intel forum. So here's the deal on the Intel side of things...If you do some vmodding, THE STILT just did 4.5 on air with a 570J, which is still cheapter than the FX-55 and is Natively PCIe. OR the 560 can do 4.2 on AIR so dang easy and is $300 cheapter than 570 right now. NO NFORCE4 ultra expensive stuff...$800 to $500 for proc and $170 for mobo = money well spent (on Intel side of things anyway)

lol I know its hard not to talk about Intel, but I used to be an Intel fan  so its not that hard :D
anyway, yeah the AMD CPUs are best for gaming and the P4s are great encoders, if you do more gaming go AMD, more encoding Intel, thats my general advice, yes I know there are programs that run just as fast on an AMD rig, but some don't....
Yeah the FX-55 is nice and so is the 3200/3500 Winchester, so its your call save money or blow it all on one chip...if your like me you'll have a hard time doing that...anyway, this is more AMD forum stuff....
So if you've got money to burn get the latest 3.8ghz P4 Prescott, its a garenteed latest stepping so your gonna get a nice chip, the lesser ones overclock great as well so again its your call on this.

Though, you'd be ruining his whole budget, as he said in his first post.
If you're gonna PC it (PhaseChange it) then I'd recommend the 560 PCIE from $449 at newegg. The extra money you save will go towards your PCIE upgrade consisting of MOBO and vid card. I imagine an AA8 Duramax and a 6800 Standard/LE (though I get butterflies in my stomach when I think of the upcoming 110nm X800 Standard for a whopping $249 !! with X800 PRO specs !! - its up to you, they're coming out in December)

Thanks for the help, a fx-55 would just rape my budget, unless I sold some of my PC's. Im pretty sure my dad would be a lil mad to come home to a $800 processor and no pc for him :P. Ill perhaps look into getting a fx-51

no don't get a FX-51, 2.2ghz with 1mb L2. PLus there not made anymore so they won't be overclocking very high.

JJCOM's right, an FX-51 is no better than a winnie now AND a winnie (even the 3000+ one) at 2.6 runs circles around an FX-53 !!!.
And you and I both know how SO DAMN EASY it is to get those things to 2.6, its like they all come stock with that capability.

Without going into fx-53 or fx-55 whats the best ( intel or amd ) high end CPU to run on a vapoor phase change setup? I see the 3.4e maxing out at 4.2 ish generally and all the AMDs all over the place :(

3.4 only at 4.2? I have my 3.0 northwood running at 4.2 on water
Well from reviews i've seen, the 3.4e / c dont seem to reach taht much higher than 4.2 on Phase :(

those were probly made when the chips were first released...your going to get more than just 4.2ghz on a vapo, if it can keep the chip cool then you might get 4.5ghz...
Gaming get a AMD CPU....the Winchesters don't like really cold temps..(look in the AMD forum)...so they may/maynot be out as it is possilbe this can be fixed with a BIOS update...but who knows..

My 3.4E Socket 478 D0 stepping chip boots to windows at 4.250 1.5375vcore, not stable but it's stable at 4.165 1.475vcore on water. I think this chip would do 4.4-4.6 with Phase.
I went thru 5 3.4C's before I found one that would reach even 3.9 on air.
I believe im going to go with the 3.4e on phase and shoot for 4.4 :). Thx for all the info guys :P

Ahh, the age old question, and the answer is still the same, its a huge crap-shoot which is HEAVILY luck dependent! Typically get the newest you can find, IF you even have a choice.
