Okay...i set up the client on a laptop and entered the same email address used for my other nodes. But it's not showing up in the list. I could have sworn that it was there earlier today and that I had actually added it but I've checked my stats throughout the day and it still says 2 nodes, not 3 ;-0
grrrr...any suggestions? reinstall?
the MIA node is 113520
thx.

That node JUST put up points... it should be there now!
If not...
Did you install it as a service? If so... stop the service and kill all of the processes associated with it in the task manager (D2OL.exe, DockWin.exe or WinGrid.exe) then start it with the D2OL.exe in the install folder... That will put it in the task bar so you can see it temp. Right click on it and select "status". In the window that pops up select the Statistics button at the top... check the email address that is listed...
If it's wrong then just delete the node.prp file in the ...D2OL\res folder. Start it again with the D2OL.exe file so it runs in the taskbar. When it comes up if will ask you to register it again. :D

What exactly is DSpy? Does it increase/decrease amount of candidates or something like that. I know it has something to do with Java.

It's a replacement for the resource hungry GUI that D2OL uses.
It's also a great monitoring tool if you have your nodes running as services.
Also useful to keep track of your nodes through a network :D

You can set your client to offline mode and if you want to upload you can just turn it to online mode. Right-mouse button on the client icon and declick online.

Ah k, but will it still fold? Like if I put it in my garage for 1 week and then plug in internet, will I only get results from 1 day or the whole week? I dont know if it downloads any test files and such stuff to know what it should "calculate".

You will get results for the whole week. Make sure you put your Candidate queue size big enough (2000) in properties if you do this.

I addade another node to my profile now, I thought it already was there but it wasnt, so my questions is: do it merge the two nodes stats to just one stat or what?
Yep, all your nodes show up in your stats. I have 27 nodes and they all add to my total. (only half of those are active btw... I wish all 27 were producing! )

Does anyone know if there is a script/program like D2OL Daddy but with changable priorites?
Erm.. best explain that a bit clearer!
Im looking to change the priority of Dockwin.exe & Gridwin.exe from low to BelowNormal every time they open themselves..
Because this is my only PC i cant fully dedicate it to "conforming" cos i have to use it all the time as well, the problem i have is that everytime i use the PC it kicks them two out the way and they stop doing anything which is a right pain in the a**e cos i want to do as much as possible for the team (and the cause of course:D)!!! It was easy to set up with F@H but D2OL is very limited like that.
Anyone got any better suggestions than doing it via TM every 5mins? :stick:
[Edit] Just found this funky program (http://gilchrist.ca/jeff/SetPriority), not had a play with it yet as im waaay too tired!
Looks like what im after, it could help us all out with rackin up them points too! :toast:

I would just like your views on "Sneaker Netting" and running your client's on someone elses computer .
thanks
Peter :)
Officially... don't do it without permission.
Privately... If you can handle loosing your job or getting kicked out of school(or whatever will happen if you get caught), then go for it. ;) You can set the client to cache 2000 units which would probably be good for a week or two. I've never tried it with D2OL so I'm not sure what kind of storage you're looking at for 2000 units.
Seriously though... only do something like this if you can handle the consequences of getting caught. People have had thier lives ruined because of this sort of thing.
MintabiePete
12-18-2004, 06:17 PM
Thanks Jeff for your views. Actually I should have enlarged on what I was asking . I know the consequences , but for me I dont like people doing it . Running a D20L client to help humanity is a great thing , and it should be encouraged . For me I also like to be a bit competitive and when someone comes along and gets a mile in front of you because he or she has put a client on someone else's computer to get more score , and then gets in front , That was what I wanted to know of peoples views on in this forum . :)
Thanks
Peter :)
Ahh... I see.
Personally... I have it installed on two rigs that I made for people and they don't mind having it there at all. In the past I've installed DC programs(SETI@Home in particular) on people's rigs without asking first. I did it because of the competitive aspect without really thinking it through. Not too long after I did it, I decided not to do it like that anymore. Back in the SETI days, for me that was about 2 or 3 years ago now, not many people would agree to have that program run on thier computers. Now that I'm into the more "medical" projects... I've found that almost everyone will say "sure, you can put that on my system as long as it doesn't hurt anything".
I don't see anything wrong with networking yourself to be honest. If you fix and/or build computers for people and they don't mind helping you out, go for it. I think most of us here could volunteer our services for friends, family, and relatives and get a little kick in our output.
BTW, welcome to the forums! :toast: ;)

On sneaker Netting... It's a good thing if you have dial-up or no physical network.
It’s also useful to play mind games with other teams :hehe:
Just to be clear (because of the way you asked the question... I don't want anyone to think sneaker netting is a bad thing) When someone is sneaker netting they are downloading a reserve of Candidates to crunch offline. So instead of uploading results every 6 hours... you will upload all of your results when you choose to. There is nothing wrong with it...
On installing it on other people’s hardware... It really all depends on how you do it. If you ask and they agree then by all means please do! It helps the team, your stats, and the project as a whole!
If you don't ask (or borging as we like to call it) then you have stepped into the realm of darkness! I would advise against it.

Hmmmmmmmm... I would advise against running D2OL at a higher priority...
Your computer will run like crap if you do that. You will be able to produce more... BUT... your computer will be unresponsive and sluggish.
A very important aspect of D2OL is that you can run it on a systems without affecting your performance. No one would use it if it slowed down your computer.

I am hooking up a few more computers, and I was just wondering if I should just use the same node or have a bunch of different ones.
Rodzilla
01-08-2005, 11:20 AM
That is totally up to you. If you want to add more just use the same e-mail address to register the new ones, log in here http://app.d2ol.com/memberServices/memberLogin.jsp , and at the bottom you will see a button for "Add node" It will bring up a window with nodes you can add. :D
I think you can, and in my case do, lose work running multiple computers on the same node ID. Over at the D2OL boards it was mentioned that if the different computers are all trying to upload/download at the same time... the work will be valid scientifically but you may lose some credit.
In my case I have 3 dual Xeons running seperate nodes on each of 4 instances of D2OL and I have 1 dual Xeon running the same node ID for all 4 instances of D2OL. This last machine is always at least 5 candidates behind the other 3 Xeon rigs every update. For the life of me I have not been able to figure it out.
After reading the D2OL boards and seeing this mentioned... I think I found out why. I'm going to be converting the one rig over to 4 seperate node IDs this weekend so I'll have some hard evidence either way next week.

Community installers are for anyone to use who want to contribute to the team under the Community account "XtremeSystems_Community"
The Personal installers do not come registered to any account... so you use them to crunch under your own account.
To register you need to install the Agent, get your node number, and go here http://app.d2ol.com/memberServices/createMember.jsp
My installers do not support Linux... They are Windows only.
The Official D2OL downloads page has an installer for Linux

It's not the "same" as the original... the installer creates it as a service and is all setup for Max output and other preferred settings. It also installs D2OL Daddy.
The e-mail that it is asking for is your e-mail that you want to create an account with. That's the difference from the community installers... the community ones come pre registered with the XS_community account e-mail.
The personal installers are not registered so you can create a node under your own account. (Which is why it ask for an e-mail address)

Our team is called "XtremeSystems"

I assume you mean memory bandwidth... and CPU MHz... You want a good balance of the 2... Just as any resource intensive app it uses both to perform its calculations...

sry if this has already been asked but when i reboot my machine do i loose any work that isnt finished? cuz i had finished like 3 (lol) out of the 200 tasks i downloaded then i rebooted and it downloaded 3 more tasks to send it back up to 200 tasks completed went down to 0. did i loose those 3 tasks?
sry for the noobness :toast:
Nope, completed candidates are uploaded every 6hrs or upon a re-boot. The only work that gets lost is conformers. There are 20 conformers in a candidate and if you are on the 18th conformer when you reboot... you loose all 18. It's not a terribly big thing if you are running anything quicker than a 1.5GHz CPU... but if you are running a 500MHz CPU... you may want to wait for those two conformers to finish. ;)

If you want to stop the agent from running you should stop the XS_D2OL service... don't worry about the DDaddy... it's just D2OL Daddy...
I'm not sure what will happen if you just kill the task without stopping the services... I've done it before... But I would recommend stopping the service and then killing the DockWin.exe (or GridWin.exe... which ever is running at the time) When you stop the service the D2OL.exe process will stop running. If GridWin.exe is running it will not stop until it finishes all 20 Conformers... unless you terminate the task in the task manager.
Every time your Agent finishes 20 conformers it will take the best candidate from that set and save it to your completed work queue... Every 6 hrs they will automatically be uploaded... if you restart the agent they will also be uploaded.
It's perfectly fine to restart without an internet connection... your results will be saved until they are uploaded... ie you hit your 6hr mark and have a network connection.

Nah, there is more than 3 rigs running. Just three node numbers. I actually could of put them all on one node. Don't let the number of nodes fool you; you could actually run 200 machines under one node number.

100-150 for the chips, 200 for the board, eh bout 140 for 1 gig twinmos (or other 3200) ram. plus u know normal junk psu, cd, hd, case hsf units, so 700-800 bucks maybe. if u upgrade a current sys then obviously less.

Use DSpy. The whole point to running it as a service is so it's out of the way... and so it starts up when you boot and no one will mess with it.
If you want the Sys tray icon to show up when the service starts anyway, it's really simple.
Go to the Service Manager (Right click on your My Computer icon on the desktop and select Manage. At the bottom you should see Services...) Stop the XS_D2OL1 service.
Now go to the task manager and stop the Gridwin.exe (or Dockwin.exe) Do it for all of them if you used a multiple node installer (XS_D2OL1, XS_D2OL2 ect.)
Now... with the services stopped and the task stopped... go into the Service Manager and open up the properties for XS_D2OL1.
Go up and click on the Log On tab. Put a checkmark beside "allow service to interact with desktop".
Restart the service. It will now start in the system tray. Now if you need to stop it just close the sys tray icon.

D2Q? you mean D2OL?
If so I think you are referring to this thread?
http://www.d2ol.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=7;t=000726
This issue has been resolved and only applied to the community account installers. It's perfectly safe to use them... that applies to the personal node installers as well.
If you are worried about any lack of support from using the installers, Don't worry. As for kb9skw's comments at the end of the thread... He doesn’t represent D2OL... He's a member of team Ars Technica and I know for a fact that my installer has been used there...
He cannot act without prodigious being he is on a team that is soon to be steam rolled by XS ;)
So fear not about support... There is more than enough knowledge here so that you will never need to touch the official D2OL boards. And if you must seek help at the D2Ol forums you will get help. There not going to refuse to support there own app. That would just be silly.

Hi all,
I am thinking that is time to change my PR440FX MB with an ASUS PC-DL. Jeff's thread on how to build a rig using 1.6 GHz LV processors is really helpful. However, I found a good deal on a pair of 1.7 GHz/400/256/1.73V processors http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=51055&item=6741054172&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW
My questions are:
1. Can I use those processors to build a PC-DL workstation. ASUS recommends processors 1.8GHz and above to be used.
2. Can you overclock a 1.73V processor like this type of xeon?
3. Besides 1.6GHz LV processors, what other processors can you use on this motherboard? Are 603 pin processors working? Can you overclock them?
Thank you all for your time.

No, don't get those. Those would be Willimate based meaning 180nm. So their pretty old processors. I don't know if they would work in that board. They're pretty old chips so I'm not sure if ASUS supports 'em

D2OL uses very little internet bandwidth.... It shouldn't be slowing it down. i would schedule all of your nodes to upload/download at once if you are having problems...
For the PC-DL the Swiftech coolers look good. MCX603-V

Yes you can manually upload... i take it that you are running it as a service.
If so then...
Now go to the "C:\XS_D2OL\D2OL1\D2OL" and open D2OL.exe. this will start it in the sys tray...
Right click on the sys tray icon and select Status. There you will see "Manual update"

If you are just running it as normal then just right click on the sys tray icon and select Status. There you will see "Manual update"

The router won't touch it... D2OL uses port 80...
From the D2OL FAQ
Q: I see port ### always open. Why? What ports does it really need?
A: The only port D2OL uses to communicate with our servers is port 80. However, there are two comman ports that work as loopbacks. One random port that will open in order to connect the engine with the GUI and another that exists to communicate with screensaver mode. These ports never access the internet and only exist locally. While they may report false hits on a local software firewall, a hardware firewall will not see this activity.

Has anyone noticed that while running D2OL certain things are kind of choppy, ie trying to change the screen saver?
Also is it better to run 4 instances on a dual xeon with HT or 2? Would two AMD 2800+ Sempron computers perform better than a single dual xeon 1.6GHz (maybe running around 3Ghz) machine.
Thanks.

A dual Xeon Machine would out perform 2 Semphron rigs... an Xeon rig would probably cost less too.
I take it your P4 is a 533MHz bus chip... I would expect the XP-M to do a little better... depending on what the XP-M is running at.
And it is definitely better to run 4 clients on a dual Xeon rig with HT! It will make a big difference!
How many candidates are your Sempron rigs putting out? I'm a bit shocked that they are doing more than your P4?

A program called D2OL Daddy will fix that.

I have D2OL Daddy installed, I used your script :). Most things are fine I just finds it's a few things that it happens with, ie changing screen savers.
Yeap it's a 533MHz(133Mhz) bus chip and I do have the XP-M(2400+) running at 200Mhz.

It would seem that D2OL Daddy won't work as a service... you have to run it manually from the "C:\XS_D2OL\D2OL Daddy" folder...
You can disable the service in the service manager (Right click on the my computer icon and select manage... go to services and disable ddaddy)
That should fix it.
little question here:
Where can i check how many candidates i have completed so far?
The "status-window" tells me i completed 108 cands, but it seems as if my last upload (22 tasks) isn`t included.
On free-dc.org it shows me (nick silence) the "right" number of 130 cands and my last update of 22.
So is it a bug or something?
Which number of cands is right?

my sempron puts out just over 100 a day. smae with the p4. it is close, but the sempron gets like 2 or 3 more. the sempron just crunches all day though, i dont touch it. i use the p4 as my main computer, so i am on it alot

Still only 108 Cands displayed, but doesn`t matter as long as they go to the xs.org team, i don`t need 'em at home anyway :D

Is it that D2OL Daddy won't work as a service or that it can't change the priority of the D2OL.exe process or DocWin.exe process when they are running as a service? I've notice that when these processes are running as a service I can't even manually go it and change their priority. If I don't run them as a service it's not a problem though.

No... it's D2OL Daddy. It dosn't work as a service. If you run it manually in the sys tray it works fine with the Agents running as services.
I'm still trying to find a fix for this but haven't been able to come up with one yet.

You can use DSpy to see when you last uploaded if you have it running as a service...
Or if you are running it as normal... just right click on the D2OL icon in the sys tray and select status... at the bottom it will show you the next scheduled update.

It's always been this way :( It looks like it works... but if you look at your task manager (after you add the "Base Priority" column) D2OL.exe is running at normal priority... it should be low.

D2OL Daddy isn't open source... so don't go getting yourself in trouble or we all get to laugh at you and publicly stone you :D
I'm not sure if more mem allocated to D2OL would help... D2OL already allocates enough mem to calculate the current Candidate.
If anything it would be cool to find a way to make D2OL use less RAM... that way you can safely run it on a PC with limited system resources...

Ok here's my noob question :D
I'm a ex-folder (I fold for about 1year and a half) and I quitted folding for 1 reason only: internet use. I'm on dial-up and I have only one phone line at home that also serve as business line. The problem was that folding was quite using my phone line with 3 p4 rig running 24hr/7days.
So what about D2OL?? Is it the same? Did it send and receive a lot of data or not? Remember, I'm on dial-up and 1MB file is A LOT of data for me!! :dammit:
jjcom
02-27-2005, 10:06 AM
If you upload every 6 hours then it won't be too bad....you could upload only on the weekend maybe? I'm on dialup as well and it doesn't seem to bad, unless the server had gone down and i'm stuck uploading 300+cans or something. But normally it doesn't seem too bad

Something you could do is set your quene size to 2000, and run the node offline till the weekend and then upload. What system are u running it on?
Charloz24
03-05-2005, 04:17 AM
Ok then it's not the same as folding! Because with folding, if I do not upload, the work stop.
My system is a winnie @ 2700mhz with 1 gig of ram.

My Winnie at 2.6 does about 140-150 per day. If you set your queue size to 2000 that would mean you'd ned to connect once every 13 or 14 days. That upload would take a bit, but you'd only need to connect then.

If you used the personal installer it should have accessed you for an email address, did it do that? If not are you sure you didn't use the community one? If you did enter an email address then you have to go to www.d2ol.com and register a new user then you can add the node you created.

You can use both all the time. They are set to low priority so as soon as you start using the PC D2OL moves out of the way and you get all the CPU cycles you need. Be sure to use D2OL Daddy too.
Once you stop using the PC D2OL will kick back up to 100%

Every time you restart D2OL it will upload any completed candidate packets that were left on your HD when you shut it down. You can see how many results a running D2OL client has by opening the java agent or right-click on the tray icon, choose "Status...", then click "Manual Udate".

D2OL uses your cpu's extra cpu clocks to help find cures for diseases. It is usually set to the lowest priority so that it doesnt interfere with other cpu intensive programs. It uploads every 6 hours. Nothing is overkill for D2OL. There is not such thing. Raw megahertz looks to be the best. DTW, I dont think we have mny people here with opterons.

I've lost my new install, everything was fine no issues & no oc. I was on XS looking for the eggs when screen flickered & than a reboot, BIOS screen came up & showed damaged raid array. I have used western digital's diag.tool and i checked it again shows no problem with raptors. This started in Nov. after a power outage i have had problems since. Started with hang on welcome screen than it would go to black no BSOD,after trying different things i was unplugging periferals & when i unpluged printer it booted fine so i thought i had a driver issue removed driver & reinstalled new driver seemed to work fine, than for no reason keyboard quit,it started working after reboot.
This leads up to the last install when i used ghost9 to image clean install with only basic drivers etc. So when it crashed surfing web i ghosted copy with no problems worked 1 day & did the same exact thing flickered & rebooted to damaged raid array. I,m on my 2nd. ghost reinstall for 3 day's now working normal? The only error message has to do with pnp windows drivers that are loaded with XP is it possible that my XP disk is some how flawed or damaged?
Sorry if this makes no sense & is long but this is just driveing me crazy not to mention my production has gone to sh##. :brick:

Are the drives still under warranty? Perhaps it is best bet to RMA. After what you've done with the fresh install and all, and then you're having the same problems with it? Sounds like hardware to me.
How does a substitute hdd work? Do you have one That way you can isolate it to the HDDs.

Drives are warranted for 3 more yrs. The way i understand there diag. program it checks for problems than makes report if there are any issues involving drives the report is allready in there data base ser.# etc. it comes out clean. Not 100% sure but according to W.D. there is no rma issue.
I'm leaning towards this PNP plugnplay issue because of the USB printer & keyboard problem, that also includes drives right?
These drives are 36g. Raptors in raid 0 with 110g.seagate for backup.I have had them in raid0 & run seperatly in past with no problems.
I use same raid driver in F6.
It seems to work now for 3 days on this ghost image(same image that crashed after 1 day). I have a 10g. partition on backup that i could install OS on & double chek drives i just thought with testing i had eliminated drives.

Yeah, I understand how they want you to run their diag. apps. But still, even if there is no problem ( according to their app ) reported, BUT the problem remains, then I'd insist on an RMA.
That is [i]if[/i/ you can isolate the drives as causing the problem. If you can do that, and eliminate the PNP driver thing as being the thing, then I don't see how they can refuse you.

Thanks Serly i appreciate your input. I agree it sounds like a drive problem. That windows error p.n.p. thing could have been caused by ghosting, the fix was slipstreaming drivers in. That error has not happened again. I will try a 30 day install on my backup & if ok will do as you suggest.
Edit The problem that Boshi caused with browser, I.E. crashing etc. Would that maybe have caused my latest problem as i was looking at old post both times. Just a shot in the dark as i assume that was cleared up and i've been fully updayed all along.
Quick question... What is buffering.and how do you set it up. Does it do anything worthwhile?

Its so you can have a backup of cans ready to go incase someone over takes you. Like you could set one rig to run offline and it would just start storing up completed cans. Then when the time is ready you dump. Nice surprise, esp. if its 2000cans :D

thanks jj, wasn't sure kinda thought it was that. So my new op systems would be a good one for the shadows? And is there a limit of cans??

Depends on the kind of buffering you want to do. If you just want to do it on the computer itself, then 2000 is the limit. (The max amount the D2OL program allows) unless the computer can two threads or more. Than its 2000 times the number of instances of D2OL.
The safer way, is to have the computer crunch and upload, but not add the node to your account. Then when you want a boost, just add the node and all of a sudden cans show up :D
