View Full Version : 948u giving higher temps

So i went from an Athlon 64 stock heatsink with the stock paste to a superb Thermalright 948u copper heatsink, with AS5!

Guess what, my temps haven't changed AT ALL! They are exactly the same and i'm freaking out!

I spread a thin coat of AS5 evenly... the sticker from the HSE is removed, the fan is blowing air onto the HSE. I'm freaked out by this, the only thing i can think of is that maybe it doesn't matter what HSE i put on there since the Athlon heatshield isn't conducting enough heat, and that maybe the only solution is to remove it... but I don't really want to do that if possible, I don't want to break my chip, and the german site i found on how to do it wasn't really convincing.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

By the way, it's a Newcastle 3200+ @ 1.675 volts @ 2400 mhz and i'm getting 61-62 degrees celcius full load. And like 45 degrees idle.

Hey, I just put some more artic silver, and checked the heatsink again......... same thing. Temps are HOT.

However! My heatsink isn't scorching hot when i touch it... yet I know it's making good contact with the CPU. What gives!

What kind of fan? The 948U needs a fairly high pressure fan for great performance.

Ok..... well as i suspected, the original A64 HIS wasn't making proper contact, so no matter what i did, it stayed warm.

Anyways, I took my courage in hand, and worked for about 45 minutes at cutting the glue off the edges of my A64. I finally got the heatspreader off, cleaned it, and then applied AS5 to it.

Now, i just put it back into my machine and the temps now read 28 degrees idle and 44 FULL LOAD. HOLY CRAP!

45-28 = 17 degree DROP at idle
64-44 = 20 degree DROP at load

I can't believe it... and I swear i'm not making this up. And the AS5 hasn't even had 10 minutes to settle in!

I'm so happy right now, i'm going to o/c this badboy to manly speeds now!

(btw, every single test/temp up to now was done at 10x240=2400 mhz @ 1.675 volts)

Bottom line, some people may already have great contact with the HIS and won't need to remove it, but for those who are getting high temps, TAKE IT OFF, it's worth the 45 minutes! (dude, it would be worth 2 hours work even..)

But be careful, I could see how I could of killed my CPU 5 times during this process :)
