I don't have the internet right now, and the most I'll be able to afford for a LONG time is dial-up. How the heck am I supposed to play HL2? Will it be slow to start the game if I have dial-up?

It will be a little slow the first time you run it while it unlocks all the files, but from then on it will be fine. Unless you are playing counter strike: source, of course.
OT: Booo Canby!! :p: We lost to them in the last high school football game of my career.

lol, it took me 30 min to install and unlock HL2 via Steam. what BS!! wow, i know why so many people hate Steam. At least doom3 didn't need half an hour of activation over the internet to play! I am using DSL 1.5mbps download speed! I feel sorry for 56k users, almost unthinkable how long it would take to activate HL2 with that.

well today i discovered yet another anoying feature of steam.
i thought i was supposed to be able to play hl2 offline once its unlocked.
but no, when i wanted to start it yesterday, steam asked me to login again (which can only be done online of course)
i thought, ok this one time im gonna be okay with it
today i started steam in offline mode an then started hl2, now guess what:

thx again valve :brick:
dunno whats going on - i played it offline for 2 days now
but it seems like i have to get steam online once a day - just to connect, theres no big traffic
must keep myself from posting flames directed at valve, but yea. guess i won't buy it. pos!. so many things about it that tick me off. steam being the most prominent one - oh and i still haven't been able to legally BUY it - and it's not an age problem :)... yea.. a friend of mine who will eventually get it - once you CAN buy it again (sold out...) - will take his rig to my place just to get it to register and :banana::banana::banana:. and if i now see, that he has to have an internet connection, which he hasn't, to play it offline, he'll probably not get it and rather wait for a shady version of this thing. btw playing OFFline would at least hint at not needing to be ONline.. geeez darn valveretards.
doom³ sold many copies without such crapatastic means of protection. hail valve, you just lost 2 potential customers. may you go to hell, gabe 'fatso' newell (or whatever his name is).
/rant
btw thnks der_khan for the headsup on this offline playing requiring being ONline...

and whats more i get twice the penalty for being a dial-up user.
other guys just dl it over steam - i installed it from dvd
which means that i have an anoying cd-check, while they get the nocd-crack right away
some people wouldnt be bothered by that, but i hate cd- and dvd-drives
all that spinning and vibrating...
they come right after steam on my hate list
some guy on a german forum had the very funny problem of his lg dvd-drive telling him - through some diabolical windows-error message - that the "dvd is empty, please insert medium" or something like that. so he has 2 choices. either drop it alltogether or get a different dvd-drive. YAY!

Lag reductions? You're not serious are you?
I used to ping 250-300 on 56k @ 26.4k and now I run 300-500 on the exact same server (i've been playing there since they went DoD from TFC) with enough choke to make it impossible to move for 30 seconds to 2 minutes at a random given moment.
This is after having tweaked cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate as well as rate, cl_rate, cmd_backup, and a whole bunch of others I cant remember off the top of my head...

I've installed 3 copys, none of which have had problems playing offline. I don't get it.

Actually I don't know if we logged off or not. I installed it on 2 friends copys that neither have internet at home. They brought there pc's up to work, we installed and activated there copys. Unplugged network/internet and played fine.

well, Its working out alright for me now, I was able to get it activated in 15 min on DSL. Offline mode works fine though, just don't log out of steam.
