simply a great game.
but i would have liked a more intense storyline and the ending was rather disappointing.
the engine looks great and is very fast, but takes forever to load new maps.
altogether 80%
Definetly the best game i ever played...
i had more fun with outcast and wing commander privateer :p:
nothing has come close
DoomIII
FarCry
UT2K4
Halo2
etc
i think deus ex 2 has
sorry to butt in here, but deus ex2??? i can't believe that. if it was dx1 i'd say okay. but 2??? pfff this crappy slow game? nah...
if all goes well i'll be playing hl2 tomorrow (some shop must have it in stock)... from what i heard its to damn linear, like all those recent shooters. too bad - hm what about a poll about the most immersive game you ever played (open to ALL platforms, consoles, pc, amiga, c64, your cell phone?...)

Fallout is better than HL2, so is Tyrian and Deus Ex. There are also countless better console games, Chrono Trigger/Cross, Star Ocean, Tales of Phantasia/Destiny/Eternia, and Zelda 3 just to name a few. Now for FPS games HL2 is definatly in the top 10, along with Deus Ex, UT2K4, SOF2, COD, Dark Forces and MOH.

Great engine. Game is decent. Wouldnt rate it very highly though.. not that I think any game out there deserves a high rating at the moment anyways ;)

i give it an 8.0 because the story... ya know... :D
I would give it atleast 9 out of 10 for the simple fact the Source Engine is awesome! And I cannot wait until they released Day of Defeat: Source
i have to agree with stevil on this one. first up, i'm a graphics whore - dropped that line around before - and that said, i like the games optics, really. i mean yeah, most of the textures are real good, special fx are hot... but some buildings that are father away just don't cut it. when you use your suitzoom to pull them closer, some of the textures still look pretty much blurred. this might be due to them being quite a distance away, but then again so was the building behind the fence in that first swampboat level (right behind the house with the crate dangling above the water) and that building was real sharp using the zoom.
anyway the sound is also pretty good, but i don't like the music. wtf is wrong with the sound designers? i mean, the first few times music starting blaring in this game i was like... wtf? i mean... for all i know they could've added black sabbath or sth and it wouldn't be more out of place than the tunes they used. oh, and i'm a fan of black sabbath btw. anyway.. that music just sucks. it simply doesn't fit. i'd rather have something more doomish - almost no music at all, just the noises of the scenery.
ok, next thing, atmosphere. WELLLLL... i dunno, as i'm not too far into the game, around the end of the first swampboat level, but so far i'm NOT impressed at all. sure there have been moments where it was really tight and i was hanging onto the edge of my seat running and just trying to stay alive - like in the first few minutes of the game, but after that.. hmmm nothing much that made me say woohooo. well besides alex that is :D just can't stop looking at her move her eyes and facemuscles and all (quel cul! :D ).
but besides that i don't really feel that kind of atmosfear (notice the play on words). i mean, with doom³ you were mostly on the edge, though you basically knew, next room, new monster, just where are they? but with this you have huge areas where you don't encounter many living beings, be it friend or foe. oh well
regarding physics. yep, have to agree they are great. and it's fun piling up stuff and using it as stepping stones, or whatnot or to tip stuff over and see it rolling/sliding down a hill. or when you have to move barrels around. airfilled barrels move up towards the water surface, others drop into the water sink a bit and plop up to the surface again.
oh well and then there's movement.. every once in a while i manage to get stuck in some place or other. like trying to walk around the kiddie playground at the beginning of the game. bam. stuck, walk that way, not this way.. aww comeon.
just my impressions so far...
oh well.. back to work :)

sky - thank you.. you have just solved one of the largest items floating about in my head...
ygpm ;)
oh yeah, the music did kinda suck.. its got the old hl1 feel to it if you really sit and listen, but it really just isnt that great. Ambience good. Music meh.
ok i'm somewhere in ravenloft or what's it called... ok level, layout-wise, but come on.. it's getting boring already. so far i would give this game an 8 tops. graphics 9, sound 9, music 6 (doesn't fit, see above). engine 10, physics 10, gameplay 6.
oh btw, yeah great fun all these zombies.. lighting them up, wohoo :) but i'm getting kinda short on ammunition now.. doh.
and the thing is... i still don't have a damn clue what this is all about. anybody telling me there actually is a story in this game? where does it hide? so far i haven't seen much of a story. and having read stevil's editorial, i kinda hunt for the papers, etc... but you know.. atm i would say it might be somewhat more technical advanced than doom, but storywise.. gimme a break. they're (at least at the point I am at in this game) equal storywise (or lack thereof).
me = dissapointed so far. i somehow expected a lot more than a few nifty physics effects and good framerates.

Whatever you do just dont say anything about returning it..
Made that mistake on another message board and now i'm being called a software pirate etc...
yeah these fanboys are worse, way way worse than with nv-ati or intel-amd.. jeez ridiculous, but i think i'll post my opinion in a local forum anyway. sometimes when i read peoples comment on this game, like "best game EVER created", "goty" or stuff like that i'm asking myself if we are indeed talking about the same game, or whether there is a secret fanboy edition, that's just sooo much better than the one i play ;).
maybe i'm too old to really get off on stuff like this like the kids seem to do... i don't know.
btw anybody tried the hl2-benchmark yet? - files linked in the anandtech review

personally, i love the music, it may not fit the environment well, but it fits my level of alertness pretty good
Definetly better than doom3 :|, the engine itself seems good. BUt both CSS and HL2 annoy me at times. Can't really explain it, but I really dont think CSS feels like CS at all, well see :)

Im enjoying it so far.
I agree with sky that the story is a bit vauge so far, but the atmosphere built up at the start was very good. very 1984.
Graphics are very good and its very playable on my 9800 system.
I like driving the cars and stuff, shame you cant ride the pushbikes though..
With the ravenscroft zombies you shouldnt need to use up too much ammo, kill em in unusual ways with the physics :D
Im loving CSS as well.
I used to play way too much CS and im getting back into it now.
Just got nine kills in one round with the scout, most of which were on my own as my team were dead. I love that gun and im getting some of my old skills back.

source engine recieves a score of 97.48723466786567 outa a 100, HL2s content recieves about 70%, no multiplayer, fairly short, too expensive, no replayability, piss easy puzzles (c'mon a rtard could solve any of them in less than 1min), boring vehicles, thin plot. The'd better release DOD soon and some new maps for CS:S cause my $80 for the silver pack seems damn steep, include the fact that ya have to pay $10 for moving any old software off ya steam account, im a little pissed with it ATM
played it though on the hardest setting first time around and ive got no intention of replaying it any time soon

and the musics crap!
woho, moved on and all. finally got getting rid of this zombie stuff. especially the last few scenes where they seem to be respawning once you turn around were pretty annoying...
anyway, i got a tiny chunk of the story (?) last night. gotta flatten novaprospect now to get a's dada back or something - and do the sandbuggy drive over these spiderwasps or whatever they are things.. woot woot. grounded another helicopter.. yea... bring it on... lol

Barricade yourself in the turret room with them and set them back up if they get knocked over. There are other ways of doing it too of course, thats just the most unimaginative way ;)
Also good idea to bring one from where you left alyx ;)

i piled up stuff to get to a corner in the upper level
then opened the boxes with the turrets and used the grav gun to quickly trow them up there before the marines come

I don't really know what to give it.
It's a really good game, excellent graphics, AWESEOM gameplay since you can do things many different way, at this point, it's in a class of its own...... but yet, I'm starting to get bored of it..... (or maybe I'm getting bored at FPS in general, I'm looking forward to GTA: SA for PC, always have a line of excitement and not being bored of the game)
i would say its the best FPS i have ever played, much better than doom3. Doom 3 had a similar type of gameplay the entire time, you get a lot of different things in Hl2.

9.5 I loved it
computerpro3
11-30-2004, 06:52 PM
8.5
Some characters such as the doctor, barney, and alyx were simply spectacular. Others, such as the first african-american guy you see on level 1 inside the subway looked like CRAP.
Same with the graphics. Sometimes I would be like  at some scenes where we were approaching photorealism (although not quite there yet) for the first time. But when you got up really close to the textures  they sucked big time. They looked like HL1.
But then, maybe its because I have to play on medium texture quality setting despite the fact I have an x800xt-pe pulling almost 200fps because the damn engine is so buggy with texture shimmering...its a major issue, over @ beyond 3d terry the catalyst maker said they are aware of it and working on it
Up until the nova prospect part there is NO story at ALL. That really pissed me off. However the atmosphere was simply spectacular and came very close to making up for it.
So basically I give it an 8.5, best FPS game I've played overall (Far cry is almost tied though). I'll admit it, I loved it.
If I could have played at max settings without texture shimmering, and Steam didnt suck so much I would have given it a 9. IF they added more story in the first half on top of that I would have given it a 9.5
Overall worth my $55.
