I just bought 1 P4 2.8b for an old rig, it lacks a pin (make photos later) and it works, how's that possible?

I'm not complaining 'cos it works, but I don't understand how's possible...
Can someone enlight me, please

maybe its jusy a ground pin thats missing.
seriously no clue. i would have thought that it wouldn't work as well.

some pins don't really make a difference. A ground pin, some other pins as well. I believe. Just be glad, some pins help overclock I think...like changes how the board interprtets things.

hehe, message from intel "you found the secret pin that does nothing!"

I hope it's not the pin for overclocking, I bought that one exactly for that, to put in a Abit TH7II s478.
Thanks guys for your posts, I never thought being lucky... :p: :p:

Could also be vcore supply...
Many pins are supply or ground as said before.
Missing pins might reduce you overclock due to lack of current.

I didn't had time to make any test with it, in some hours I will make extensive overclocking tests, but for now I hope isn't what you all are saying, otherwise I must get rid of it.

is it a retail chip? becuase if so missing a pin is covered under their warranty at least through ipds and retailers.

No I bought it in ebay, I forgot to post but I already done some overclocking tests and I didn't like it, Normal stock 2.8b is 1.525v, raising to 1.65v I had only 14% OC margin 2.8b@3200MHz

I have also a 2.4b@2900 at 1.55v and 1.65v @2999 (3000 shuts down @ 1.72Vmax)

I couldn't do a pic or photo because it's at my office, and I can't do nothing about it, but perhpas tomorrow I could go to my office and take some photos and cpu-z pics, btw it's not so important I was only curious about the lack of a pin.

The mobo is a TH7II PC800RdRAM

Thats your problem, Rambus HATES to be overclocked.

some pins are reserved and dont do anything. most of the pins are ground and vcore

I forgot to take some pics as I promised, but now they are here, better late than never...

sorry for the bad pic, couldn't do it better :(

For a 3.2Ghz, today the temps are good, but yesterday it was a chaos, almost 72°C only for CPU without playing or benching, didn't understood why ...

Perhaps the lack of the pin is doing temps gone crazy and sometimes some progs crashes, I'm just unlucky, this cpu is only good in stock

I really don't have any problem oc rambus, my 2x256 Samsung PC800 goes to 1096MHz in 1/1 ratio (P4 1.8b@2466Mhz) 4/3 ratio (P4 2.4B@3000MHz), and I got new PC1066 wich I did a little run with them and gone to 1216MHz, also in 1/1 then CPU couldnt go higher is this same cpu in this thread and my mobo doesn't like PC1066 it runs until I don't turn off the PC and then must put again PC800, didn't like it, soon I will get a Asus P4T533-C and if you want I will post my findings.

this mobo is NOT GOOD for OC (stock=133FSB / max=150FSB), I just got rid of it, I sold it to a friend who doesn't care about OC

yeah try and find a P4T533, much better than the -C version, nice to see rambus is still alive, shame i got rid of my TH7-II ages ago :(

I'm using in the office the TH7-II, good overclocker, but can't put a PC1066 :( , as soon I got my wish list (as my sig), I will change my current rig at office (#2) for the one at home (#1) and I will get rid of #2 for some more bucks

Do you mean the normal version wore better at OC than the -C?
I got the -C in ebay (I just sold it yesterday to a friend) 'cos there's HT support on it, I even tryed a bios editor to change it but couldn't open it so I quitted, didn't care it's old news now... :toast:

a lot of pins are redundant for current purposes. your CPU draws lots of amps. so multiple pins supply power or connect to ground. It could also just be an unused pin.

My guess is that it's a redundant pin and that pin is wired in parrellel with about 20 other pins so it can be broken off and not make a difference.

with overclokcing... who know what difference it will have. I doubt one pin is gonna make or break your rig.

If you look, there is a conductor trace that goes to the pin to the right, which in turn looks like it goes to the pin to its right. It's more than likely a ground pin.

Thanks very much for all your info, as I said I will try to sell it to another friend or simply do as the guy I bought it from did, I will sell it in my local 'bazar' journal.
