I'm getting ready to buy a new core system(CPU,MB,etc) and need some advice on future proofing it. I'm going down to buy about only every 1-2yrs or so and would like to make this upgrade last.

I'll be sticking with the AMD system and will be overclocking :D as always to extend the CPU. Should I go with a 939 or 754 socket system? I already have a GF6800U so I'll be getting a AGP board. I heard that the duel-core CPUs were to be 939's. Are they going to stop making the 754's??

Heres what I was thinking of:

754:

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ $155 (O/C to 2.4ghz or higher)
DFI LP UT nF3 250Gb $115
G.SKILL PC4400 2.5-4-4-4-8/ 1GB $240

or

939:
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ $179 (O/C to 2.4ghz or higher)
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum $131
G.SKILL PC4400 2.5-4-4-4-8/ 1GB $240

If you want "future proof" system, dont get s754

s754 will die and s939 take over it..

go for s939

Then I think there will be a s900 for the dual core cpu's.. but I aint sure

Go for the 939 option if you want futureproof system.

If you want it the most futureproofed (:D) system you should wait for NF4 SLI + 6800PCX, but I've already saw that you already have a 6800AGP.

Dual-Core CPU's can be used on 939 boards IIRC (Memcontroller on the CPU), it's all in AMD which will decide if the K9 will use DDR1, DDR2 or even DDR3.

Where can you pick up the g.skill for $240?

939 will be more futureproof.

But in a years time if you want to upgrade graphics then you will want PCI express.. so you will need a new board anyway..

As for CPU upgrade 939 "should" still be in use by the time you want to upgrade but the chances are you willstill end up buying CPU and motherboard together.

So 939 is "more" futureproof, but not by a long way..

Work out whats the best "bang for bucks" at the moment and buy that...
If you can afford the extra for 939 then I dont see much reason NOT to buy it.

Cool, thanks guys. Yeah I'd love to buy every 6 months but more pressing matters have moved up the list:house remodeling(damn wife), and other small things. So I figure I'll be stuck with this upgrade for a year or two. Till she's done:-(
